Yeah, that's jaw-droppingly inappropriate on so many levels. From pushing Santa on kids who aren't Christian (I don't know if there are any, but I doubt that the school does either. To putting the kids and the parents into a very unpleasant situation where the kids are whining for/expecting gifts they hadn't even thought of before, and the parents have to tell them no and deal with completely unnecessary hurt feelings (or go and buy stuff they hadn't wanted or needed). I definitely would not want to see this in my preschool.

yeah, I definitely would not be cool with my daycare encouraging materialistic consumerism and possibly initiating a non-stop barrage of requests for Christmas for the next two weeks.

Nope nope nope nope nope. That activity is exclusive in SO many ways - people of other religions, families that don't celebrate Santa, families with fewer resources. Plus, let's NOT teach our kids to be materialistic consumers before we have to!

Thanks everyone. I wasn’t sure if it was just me. Your thoughts helped me form a more articulate message to the director. I love the idea of a giving-centered activity.

Our daycare did something similar, but they used catalogs and flyers from the mail for kids to cut out their favorite part of the holidays (so they created a collage with Christmas trees, snow, stockings, Christmas lights, decorations, food, etc.) I would also be annoyed with a wishlist to santa activity in daycare.

That would not be okay with me on several levels, but especially the concerns you mention about diversity--not everyone celebrates Christmas, including our family (and it's already halfway through Hanukah so def too late for a wish list for my kids, though that isn't even the point haha).

Our daycare doesn't do anything about any holidays. They focus on lights during this time of year as part of the curriculum as kids are seeing lights everywhere in the same way that they focus on leaves in the fall and seeds/plants in the spring, but nothing that the teachers plan is explicitly holiday-related and I so appreciate that. (though if a kid's own self-directed play is related to a holiday, they do support that, so like on halloween the preschoolers were pretending to be trick or treating, but the teachers didn't bring up the idea).

Websites? That’s the weirdest part. I think the teacher was just clueless and just thought of a last minute activity, but I don’t get the websites!

I would not be happy - $500 - $3000, sheesh. But even just the list with websites I wouldn't be very happy. And I agree that this it's not particularly sensitive towards those who either don't celebrate the holiday or who may be of lower socioeconomic status. Much better to have an activity that involves making a homemade gift FOR someone.

The execution icks me out as well. I’d have been totally ok with something more abstract, like cutting out magazine/catalog pictures and filling Santa’s sack or a box or a space under a tree or something. But I don’t like the website list. It’s presumptuous on their part...especially just over a week out from Christmas. My kids lists are WAY done, there is no changing now!!!

I think that's REALLY weird. I don't think it's appropriate for a school to have preschoolers picking things out from magazines and websites and giving you a shopping list.

I would absolutely say something, maybe to the director?

I don't think there was any ill intent on the part of the teachers, but it does set unrealistic expectations for the kids and I wouldn't have a problem at all explaining my thoughts to the director. I do like to go in with a solution, though, so I really like @gingerbebe's response.

Hm. Yeah, I wouldn't be okay with this. I appreciate how engaging this activity was, but not the premise of the activity. DD is only 3, but as a child I was allowed to ask for 1 or 2 things, not a whole list. Also, the websites feels so icky and commercialized to me. However, to put it in perspective, my daughter does attend a religious daycare.

Ahh! I have no idea what's socially acceptable or politically correct, but I feel you on all points! My oldest doesn't really understand Santa (nor are we hyping up Santa in anyway), so getting a list like this would definitely annoy me. Granted, DD is 3 and she "asks" for stuff on TV all the time and I doubt she'd remember/care about such wishlist but still!

I think they were probably thinking of it as an easy/cheap craft using catalogs and stuff they already had around, but I wouldn't be happy about it at all and I would definitely bring it up to the teachers. But I would probably also offer to bring in like extra school supplies or cut outs so they could do an activity about presents or something that had nothing to do with catalogs. I might also suggest they make the activity about GIVING - like think of a gift you would like to give to someone - and do a project based on that.

But I'm an annoying parents who sits on the preschool board.

Our daycare has done a wishlist activity before... but not to this scale. More of a one item you want from santa, draw a picture sort of thing. I didn't have a problem with that, but we celebrate. The daycare also has holiday themed parties, so it's not really trying to hide anything.

The activity in this context bothers me a bit though. Why are there websites? These are very specific items listed here, was someone navigating a website with the kids? Also, if you're going to have kids cut out items, why not provide newspaper ads with more realistically obtainable items? I don't think it's an idea that needs to be scrapped altogether, but the execution needs modifying for sure.

Yesterday I picked DD (4.5) up from preschool and she was so excited about the wish list she made for Santa as the activity that day. She hadn’t shown any interest in talking to Santa or asking for anything specific before. Now she has a list (with websites). She also came home with an envelope of cut out things she would like. I like the types of items she picked but she was cutting from a preschool supply catalog so the price range on the items was $500-3000!

I am surprised by this activity. This isn’t a religious preschool and the preschool is diverse with lots of immigrants. My friends that immigrated as children have told me stories of feeling like Santa skipped their houses and only went to white kids houses. It just seemed like it was setting expectations way too high when you don’t even know if people celebrate.

More selfishly I don’t want a list on Dec 14th.

I haven’t complained to preschool about any activity before but I’d rather not see this one repeated with DS. Am I overreacting?
