Halloween I'm not too worried about, as DS is only 4 and we will either trick or treat on our street or I'll do a candy hunt (Easter-style) in our yard. I might amp up our yard decorations this year for his enjoyment

Thanksgiving has been at our house the last few years and my parents moved their May flight to visit us to Thanksgiving. Fingers crossed they can still come!

We have always flown to NY for Christmas and would typically have bought our tickets by now. I'm super conflicted as we will have a 4 yo and 6 month old, but haven't seen family/friends in a year. I'm hopeful we can still fly, but if not, then I'm looking at it as an opportunity to create new traditions. Also, would our extended fam/friends even want to see us with covid?

I'm super sad, for now. Both my girls have to go back to school; and once it's too cold to spend time outdoors, I'm not sure if we'll be doing Thanksgiving or Christmas with anyone

Although no one thinks in person school will actually make it till then, so if we go all remote and have quarantined for at least 2 weeks, then we will resume seeing family again.

Halloween isn’t as big of a deal for us but Christmas definitely is...and we spent last Christmas with our whole family sick with gastro and the little one got a double ear infection right after. It was 10 days of hell starting on the 23rd so Christmas was totally ruined for all of us. Now this year, I can’t even bring myself to think about it yet because it’s just too depressing :crying: We usually have our little family here then travel to see my family and DW’s with all the nieces and nephews. Most of her family are teachers and all are school age kids except my youngest who is in daycare. I have no clue 🤷🏻‍♀️

Ugh this has me so bummed out 😣

My 5 year old started worrying about Halloween in June and it hadn’t occurred to me yet. Pretty sure there’s no way there will be trick or treating this year (suburb of San Francisco) but I told him they can still dress up and knock on the doors inside our house and DH and I will jump around opening the doors and handing out candy.

We weren’t planning to travel for Thanksgiving this year but would love to rent a house and do a little getaway with just us. We’ll see how that goes as I’m also in a very frugal mindset and am not loving the prices at the places I’ve looked at...

Christmas is the real heartbreaker for me. I LOVE Christmas with the whole big family but we would definitely have to travel (to Texas) and I’m sure not everyone is going to be on board even if we decide to make the trip. I’ve spent 1 Christmas with just us (when we were 2 and a 1 year old) and my MIL and it was the absolute worst and I spent most of the day hiding and crying. I’m sure now that the kids are older and there are more of them it will be more fun but still... Covid sucks.

It's our year to not travel for Thanksgiving, so we'll be spending it at my in-law's and it's typically just us and them. Christmas we'll spend with my parents, who live near us. Not sure what's happening with my big extended Christmas party that we usually travel out of state for. It's my brother's turn to host it and he hasn't mentioned anything yet. Even if he does have it, I am not sure if we'd go.

I really hope Halloween isn't canceled, even though I am sure all of the fall festival activities probably will be. My son is already talking about being Mario with his brother being Luigi. I think trick or treating can be done safely, but we'll see!

@ElbieKay: Super cute costume idea!

I am worried about this too because we are bubbled with my parents but we are not bubbled with my in-laws, my sister, or my husband's cousins. (That is our typical Thanksgiving / Christmas / Passover crowd.)

This spring we just had Passover with my parents, but my side is the Jewish one so it was less of an issue to exclude everyone else. But Thanksgiving and Christmas are going to be touchy because it's already an issue that my parents spend more time with us than my in-laws. (There are so many valid reasons for this, but it's obviously not well-received.)

I am already plotting about Halloween. Numbers are low in my area right now (suburb of NYC). I think my town will rally. I bet people will do things like leave a bowl of candy at the end of their sidewalk and then wave from their stoop. I might do a candy scavenger hunt in our yard and let my son invite some friends over. (Basically in the style of an Easter egg hunt, but with candy.)

I'm trying to bribe my 6yo to be Willy Wonka by offering to dress myself like a giant blueberry. If he concedes then I will make the 2yo twins Oompa Loompas and get my husband an Augustus Gloop costume!

@catgirl: We were just talking about Halloween tonight. DH loves the to make a costume for DS. We told DS if he can’t trick or treat we will buy him candy.

We live far from family and we don’t travel to them for either holiday and they never travel to us. So at least we do t have to worry about that.

We usually travel (by plane) for Thanksgiving week to stay with my spouse’s huge family in the south, and that week is also DS’s birthday so it’s really festive. We’ve already called it this year :( We will just be staying home.

@Becky: GREAT Halloween suggestion! DS2 has become obsessed with Halloween. He really wanted a Halloween themed birthday party this year when he turned 5 but clearly that didn't happen. Instead we're going to decorate the house like crazy and we've chatted with the neighbors that if nothing else, we'll do some socially distanced ToT at our 5 or 6 houses. I just hope we don't have 6 inches of snow like last year! The things we do for our kids b/c I usually am not a big Halloween person but you should see my Pinterest board. :)

As for Thanksgiving and Christmas, that's tough. This is the 1st year after my grandma has passed and she was the true matriarch of the family. All holidays were at her house. My mom is supposed to take over but she is super worried about all of this as she and my dad are pushing 70. We live close and would normally bubble with them so it wouldn't be an issue but my kids are both going back to school soon so we'll have to pull back. Sucks but I get it. I'm sure that won't last forever so I'm guessing that we'll have time to quarantine and probably be able to spend the holidays with them. I have 3 brothers though and they are all not as careful as my mom would like them to be so it'll be interesting to see how it all works out. I told my mom that she needs to lay down the rules of what she's comfortable with and let everyone make the decision on whether they can comply. Otherwise, we might be celebrating Christmas in July next year. :(

I suppose I should think about DH's family but we'll have to play that by ear. We usually travel to see them the Saturday before Christmas and get together with his cousins. However, his aunt has MS and has been in and out of the hospital. I"m guessing we'll have to cancel that and maybe we'll just invite the immediate family up to see us instead.

I am assuming this will be our first solo Thanksgiving. We typically travel to our parents but my parents and brother both work in highly exposed environments and can't take two weeks off to quarantine so I wouldn't feel comfortable being with them, and my in laws are less exposed, though my MIL still works too, but they're also very high risk health wise so it's going to be best for everyone to stay put. My BIL and his fiancee live nearby so if they're willing to isolate for a week or so, maybe we could do Thanksgiving together but honestly I'm just resigned to flying solo this year. Our families don't typically celebrate Christmas so that isn't going to be a big change, other than us not being able to travel/vacation over winter break.

We live 40m from my family and regularly see them (and my mom provides childcare for my son 3x a week). We've always stayed home for Thanksgiving and flew to the in laws (4 hr flight) for Xmas. We've already decided we will not be flying this Xmas and will stay home, and spend it with my family.

Saw this on FB for Halloween (pic) which is also DD1’s bday. I love it!

We see my parents and my in-laws and unless things change we will do Thanksgiving with my parents. It’s usually a huge holiday gathering hosted by my husband’s grandma or aunt, so this is a change.

Christmas will be the hardest because DH’s family has an annual Christmas Eve show where everyone does hilarious performances. Another gathering of 30+. I think that could be done via Zoom really nicely, and several smaller groups/pods could watch together. We had a few family members who live out of state/country participate that way last year and it was still fun!

We were talking about this today, actually. We have "bubbled" with my mom and stepdad, so we will hopefully still be seeing them (assuming cases haven't spiked). We normally spend Christmas Day with them. But we have only been doing outdoor, socially distanced visits with DH's mom and stepdad - which will obviously be hard during winter in New England. We normally spend Christmas Eve with them but they have a huge party, and I can't imagine we would even consider it this year. But my MIL will be pissed and won't understand at all.

Honestly I'm currently more worried about Halloween! I can't imagine trick or treating will be normal this year. And while I'm not thrilled to have an upset MIL over Christmas, I am really worried about an upset DD if she can't dress up and trick or treat :silly:

I know the holidays still seem like a ways off, but I'm a planner and I'm trying to figure out how we can make it work this year. We usually spend Thanksgiving at my in-laws or have them come to our house with my brother/sister-in-laws. Of course this year we'll be dealing with Coronavirus, so that changes things. I have one BIL who would have to travel from out of state (he may not want to do that) and one SIL who is only spending time with those who are self-quarantining (so she may not feel comfortable coming).

Has anyone put any thought into this yet and how it will work or not work? It's making me sad to think about spending the holidays by ourselves this year.
