@paigeface: Yeah, see if you can wait a couple minutes even if the crying starts. Really sounds to me like he's trying to settle. Sometimes they cry out a little (like talking in their sleep) but they just settle back down. I read this around 3-4 months and it changed my life! He often did just go back to sleep and i was just prolonging the wakeup by going in.
Might not be the case for you, but worth a shot?
Good luck!

@pinkcupcake: gosh, I never thought I would say the newborn stage was easier but it was! 4 months has been the hardest for us. Yes! I have heard of wonder weeks, I will look into that for sure!!

@SweetiePie: It's followed by crying unfortunately even with his eyes closed. I will try not to go in right away and see if that works! Thank you!

@paigeface: Hi! Just an idea - do you HAVE to go in when he's thrashing? That's often their soothing mechanism. (Lots about this on The Google). It seems strange, like they're distressed, but they're not! (Of course different if crying is also involved but if it's thrashing with eyes shut and no crying, Id leave him be. He's just getting settled). My 16 month old STILL does this. It helps him get settled when I first put him to bed and I often notice it if he's connecting a sleep cycle. He even bonks his head a little on the crib sometimes but it doesn't bother him so I've learned to just let it be unless he's REALLY hitting it.
Just a thought! It might save you some stress.

They do eventually settle ! I remember 4 months being really hard. There's so much happening in their little brains and so much development going on. Hang in there! It'll get better soon (until of course the next developmental leap - then it gets challenging again!).

Have you read about the Wonder Weeks? I found it was generally helpful in explaining when you can expect these difficult months / weeks to occur.

We are still dealing with little sleep. He won't sleep in his crib past 10:00 and thrashes back and forth in a restless manner with his eyes still closed until I go in there. I go in and soothe him with my hands not picking him up about 10 times every 30 mins ALL night long. Sometimes when he's in a deep sleep again he'll wake himself up 10 mins later to start it all over again! I am so exhausted. Finally, I just end up bringing him in bed with DH around 3:00am when I just can't take it anymore. I got two hours of sleep last night and have stayed home from work this whole week with all the lack of sleep (I work for my family thankfully!)

Did anyone go through this stage starting at 4 month and going into 5 months? Do they eventually settle?

I think it gets better! My kiddo will be 5 months next week, and the last month has been rough, but it's been getting better every day. Right after Christmas it seemed like my easy, mellow baby turned into a shrieking, teething, wake up and want to eat and play at 3 am, no naps baby. She's been sleeping through the night again for about a week now. And although still teething, she hasn't been screaming. And she's been napping a bit better.

I think its totally normal. Growth spurt, teething, they're learning so many new skills.

I really think every baby is different and every baby has different "OMG I can't do it" and different "OK, I can do this" times for the parent. My 8 month old just recently started getting fussy for no describable reason and I as a parent can guess (teething? object permanence? nap consolidation leading to being overtired?) But really, I have no idea

Honestly, your baby is being tough right now, but it will get better! I promise, just take it one day at a time and do what you need to in order to get through it. HUGS

3-4 months was the worst for us. After that she got onto a schedule and she was much much happier. 5 months on til currently (9.5 mo) has been a dream. Hang in there.

4 months was my hardest time period thus far (my son is 14 months now), way worse than the newborn days. It was the WORST. My heart rate gets elevated when I start thinking about how awful his sleep was, how he'd be up for hours in the middle of the night, etc. I'd say his night sleep improved by 5 months, but naps were still a struggle until 6/7 months. It WILL get better. Hang in there, mama! You're doing an awesome job!

I totally understand. Months 4-6 were rough for me because everyone had told me that once they hit 4 months it was just so much easier. Even though she WAS getting somewhat easier, she was also still up all night, fussy, and generally unpredictable - the tiniest thing would set her off and once she was crying nursing was the only way to calm her. She hated everyone but me and DH and was so clingy. I felt like something was seriously wrong with my baby.

She's 6.5 months now and the last week or so has been amazing. I finally get what people were saying! I think for us, a big part of the change is that we sleep trained. In three nights she went from waking up 5+ times to 1-2, and she is so much happier now that she's getting consolidated sleep. So that might be something to keep in mind!

That being said, I don't think we were ready to sleep train earlier. Toughing it out was probably the only option at 5 months... Good luck!

Yeah I remember 4-5 months being really hard with short naps and general awareness that he "could" do things but couldn't. And a growth spurt. It got better at 8 months when we sleep trained him!

I am sorry! It definitely gets better! I feel like from birth to 6 months were hard, period. I mean, 6-12 months were hard too, but it really does get better and better.

I think DD was in the merlin sleepsuit by 4 mo b/c she hated the swaddle but couldn't deal with the freedom!

5 and 6 months were SO great. Hang in there! Can't imagine teething on top of developmental leaps! That IS tough!

As far as swaddle weaning, we did one arm out for two weeks (alternating arms) and then quit the swaddle cold turkey at around 5 months. Rolling over then disrupted her sleep a bit but after a couple weeks she was fine!

This month has been the hardest of them all. I seriously feel like I have a newborn all over again. Our LO will be 5 months in a week and I hope he goes back to being our happy baby. He is teething, he won't sleep in his crib for longer than a few hours, he's constantly fussy and super clingy. Also, he is starting to roll over on his own so I've started to swaddle him in the sleepsack with one arm out (he hates it and keeps moving his arm!) Did anyone else experience this at 4 months? Is it because they are making a huge development leap? Does it get better?

I feel like crying. This month sucks!
