We are just taking her to Easter Sunday service. We don't go regulary to church, we want to work on this, but she always does fine sitting during it. She colors and we bring a snack. She loves to stand up and sing with us.

@Happygal: I know what you mean about behavior during more solemn services. G'luck to you, as well!

@MrsADS: I hear ya. DD is older and on the days she naps, she's not down until 8/8:30, so we have some more wiggle room, but not much. Yum, bulletins are delicious!

@meredithNYC: Oh yes. DD has been known to practice her dinosaur roaring, ask if we're done yet, if it's time for her treat (a baked good at coffee hour), etc. It was much easier when they weren't verbal, haha

@LovelyPlum: I would love to go to the Easter Vigil as well, but it's the longest and latest. It would most likely be an utter nightmare. Of course, Stations of the Cross is right smack in the middle of nap time, so that's also out. I'm thinking about just taking her to the first and second reflections, but it feels strange to just peace out, right in the middle. We shall see!

@snowjewelz: Yes, bedtime is making this extra tricky!

@avivoca: Solid idea about reading the Easter story, at home; thanks!

She will go to Easter service. Our church doesn't do Maundy Thursday services and we won't be able to get there early enough for the sunrise service. I plan on reading her the Easter story each night (the corresponding story to the particular night).

Me and DD are skipping Good Friday service since it starts after her bedtime. We'll be at Easter Sunday service since we are at church every Sunday already.

@deerylou: this is my exact thought: I like taking her in theory, but the reality is so daunting that I probably won't. I am not sure when is the right time to do it!

We're skipping Easter Vigil, even though I love that service. It's just not happening. I'm still up in the air about Holy Thursday Mass, mostly due to bedtime. However, I'm going to try to take her to service on Good Friday, even if it's only the Stations of the Cross, and not the main service.

I've been thinking about this, because my parents starting taking us to these services as early as I can remember. Holy Week is the most sacred week for Catholics, and I think it's important to expose kids to them. And I am normally OK with kids making a bit of noise in Church. On the other hand, the one time I could see it not being appropriate for lots of noise is during the solemn service on Good Friday.

If we don't go, we're going to read some Bible stories and maybe do a Stations at home. She's only 2 at this point, so I'm not as worried about it this year. Next year, though, I'd like to maybe participate more.

My 3 year old is the child who yells out, "I'm bored" during mass, causing me to want to run and hide, so... I haven't decided whether to bring her or not. I have the option of leaving the kids (I have an 11 month old, too, but he's easy - and non-verbal, lol) with my husband, so I might just do that.

We aren't taking our 7mo only bc Maundy Thursday and Good Friday are both at 7 pm and his bedtime is 6:30/7, and pushing it later is absolutely not an option. He cries hysterically when he's tired and is generally a wreck from 5pm on! Otherwise we would! We'll be there for Easter with him of course. He actually LOVES church, we say it's his favorite time of the week. Loves the music, loves seeing everything and everyone, loves crinkling up/eating the bulletin (lol).

@deerylou: I wouldn't go take her to ash wednesday or the more somber services b/c I would be mortified and concerned if she disrupted service. But she's an active, loud one year old. If she was a little baby I could easily whisk away to the quiet room, I might try it out. Good luck to you!

@mediagirl: @Happygal: Good luck, ladies! We're attending the late morning, family service on Easter Sunday and I think it should be fine and super child friendly. I'm especially curious if anyone is bringing their children to evening services Thurs-Saturday. In theory, I want to, but I'm not sure it's the grandest idea.

Unless she's at the beginning of her nap, we'll attend Easter Sunday service at my parent's church. It's large and she will freak if I try to leave her in the busy nursery, so I'll probably hope she'll stay still for the music and then let her move around outside the sanctuary....not really a solid plan, but I hate to miss service. We're basically winging it!

For those who observe Holy Week, are you planning to take your infant/toddler/preschooler to *evening* services?

DD (2.5) usually goes to nursery until communion, on Sundays. She has sat through an entire mass on numerous occasions and usually does alright, sometimes excellent. However, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday service start at 7pm; Saturday's Easter Vigil begins at 8pm. Childcare is not provided at these services.

Are any of you braving these nighttime services with your children? When DD was an infant, she'd sleep anywhere as long as she was being worn, but I don't expect this to be my experience with her, now.

If you're skipping, are you doing anything alternatively, at home? Open to ideas.

Thanks!
