UPDATE: One of the cords was not plugged in all the way. I kind of had a hint because there wasn't any static sound...and I couldn't pick up my heart beat either : ). We re-plugged and found it immediately. Yay!

@lemondrop: Yeah I got this one from a friend and it's the basic internet version. All of the other times I've always heard the heartbeat, but the beats per minute were totally off.

When I was early on in my pregnancy, even at my doctors office, it could take a minute or so for him to find it with his doppler. Ah...there is no way I would worry myself out with it!

That is exactly why I did not use the one we have at work, I would absolutely freak, although everything is more than likely just fine! Remember that you have to really pay for a good quality doppler, most home dopplers suck.

There were several visits where the medical assistant had a hard time finding the heartbeat at appointments. She just had to keep looking for a while before finding it finally. Made me so nervous every time!

At 15 weeks its still very early and the baby has plenty of room to move around and so its harder to find the heartbeat.

I'm 33w and my OB still has trouble finding LO's heartbeat at pretty much every appt; I have wiggly children who "hide" as soon as the doppler is placed on my stomach. After some searching he can usually find it.

I gave my home doppler to my best friend with the warning that if she called me crying that she couldn't find the heartbeat I would drive the 1.5 hours to her house to smack her silly, lol - I could find the heartbeat most of the time but it definitely had to do with the position. And I also felt that I had to point it way further down than I thought I would have to most of the time.

OP - I read something online when I was using mine that if you lay down flat on a hardwood floor and point it down towards your public bone and angle it, going very slow side to side - that's the best way to find it. And that is what worked for me.

i don't have one but I remember once even my doctor couldn't find a heartbeat because of the placement of the baby (and he does this daily). So ya, it's possible.

I have one and have been listening off and on since about 9.5 weeks. After the first few times I didn't have much trouble but yesterday I listened before work and couldn't find it. Of course I was freaking out bc i was scheduled for my NT scan. But sure enough baby was fine and moving like crazy which probably would explain why I had trouble. I'm 13 weeks today.

This is why OB's don't like you to get a home doppler. Because you freak out for no reason! Baby is probably just curled up an hiding... definitely don't worry yourself. Wait until tomorrow, drink or eat something with sugar, and then lay flat on your back with your legs stretched out in front of you and try again. But don't panic!

It took me a a week or so to get it down. I think sometimes people look to high up or the doppler can be loose in connection and lose sound. Don't give up. This video helped me immensely!!!

The only experience I have with a doppler is at the doctor's office, and they know where/how to find it so there was never a problem. I purposely didn't get a doppler for at home because I was worried something like this would happen and I'd feel unsettled. Hope you find it again next time and people have some tips for you!

@MsMini: I think the ones they use at a hospital are way higher grade than the sonoline B ones....So, you might have been working with superb equipment compared to the home dopplers.

@Mrs. Bee: totally agree with the juice suggestion.
I became a pro at finding the heart ONLY after figuring out that I can only find it once I've eaten something sugary or acidic. That makes baby up, his heart beat gets louder? and faster and I always find it that way (or did at 15w). Another thing: lie flat on your back without even a pillow under your head. It will change the position of your belly and thus cause baby to move around and re-position. So, you can get a better chance at finding him when he's moved out of his "fetal position" curl-up.

Pretty soon...i'd say 17w: you'll start being able to find him right away because you'll feel his kicking so you'll know exactly whee to look. But, I assume if you feel kicking you won't be compelled to find a heartbeat anyways:)
*I only say "he" because I'm having a boy. I by no means am a psychic ;)

i was always able to find the heartbeat really quickly, but it really does depend on the baby's position so i wouldn't worry. i would try again tomorrow at a different time of day? maybe drink some juice beforehand to get the baby moving?

I've been using my doppler for a few weeks now, probably about 4 times total. Every time I've found the heartbeat right away. Tonight there's just nothing. Google reassured me a little bit, but I just want to know others' experiences. Were there times you couldn't find anything at all? How soon did you check again? (I'm 15 1/2 weeks.)
