@jhd: thanks! It's very exciting but also kind of confusing, I feel like we've just begun the process. I know there are more steps, so I'm not really sure January/February was realistic, but we will just take things one step at a time and see what happens. Tomorrow we have to get the last of the paperwork notarized and then they said they could schedule our home study interviews and get us signed up for CPR classes. I know there is more training that we have to do, I'm just not sure when we do it.

Thanks guys! It went fine, they were super impressed with how prepared we were and we were very proud of our house and property. They didn't have any questions or concerns. We were kind of thinking that there were many more steps, but it seems like we are actually getting rather close. They were talking about finalizing our certification by January or February! That is crazy and exciting and terrifying all at the same time. It's so weird still to think about having a baby in the house in a few months as a possibility. Nuts.

Is this your initial? They will come with a checklist of things and then let you know what you need to do. It will be things like fencing around bodies of water, fireplaces have to be covered, locks on all your knives or weapons, locks on your meds, a fire extinguisher, a first aid kit, your hot water can't go higher than 120. Anything that isn't done they will tell you to do.

Thanks! Everyone says they're not too scary but then I read the checklist (one says something about the property being free of safety hazards, but doesn't go into specifics) and I get anxious again! I guess we'll see. It's just the initial inspection, so we will fix anything they point out and hope that does it for the final one.

Good luck! When I had my home inspection they looked for smoke detectors in every room and made sure we had a fire extinguisher. Since I adopted embryos I didn't need my whole house childproofed, but they did make sure I had any chemicals on high shelves. It wasn't nearly as scary as I thought it would be. They didn't check our cars.

Well, we have slowly been moving ahead with the foster to adopt process. We aren't close yet, but we have our initial home inspection on Tuesday afternoon and I'm terrified. I know it's just the initial one, but of course I want things to look decent and I just wish I knew specifically what kinds of things they're concerned about. We live on 3 acres with animals, so making the entire property childproof is a joke. Our fencing isn't perfect (but it keeps the animals in/out) and our property isn't by any means perfectly landscaped. I think it looks fine but it feels like they're just going to come over and judge everything and it's stressing me out. Do any of you have experience with this? Do they check things like the cars? Our cars are the only part of our lives where we are messy, so I guess I should work on cleaning those out today. Our house should be fine, I've been cleaning all week and reorganizing so it doesn't look cluttered or messy. It's all in good shape. It's mainly the property that I'm concerned about. And just having someone walk into our house and tell us if we're fit to have kids here or not. Ugh.
