We have pullout drawers for dishes and cups and my eldest is able to reach the cutlery drawer without issues.

We use a bookshelf for her clothes so she can pick her own clothes without issues.

Art supplies are in a rolling art cart, but we put paints out of the way.

I do want to have things more accessible, but a lot of times it means a bigger mess in more areas!

I put a hanging organizer in the closet and put one week's worth of school outfits in there so he can just grab it and get dressed.

Art supplies are in his room in a rolling organizer cart thing, he can also access paints and play dough from bins in the kitchen.

I put a lot of lights on a remote control switch, so he can just turn them on and off himself without touching the light source. Then we have Alexa so he can ask for music or turn on some of the other lights in the house.

The kitchen items are mostly out of reach because the cabinets and even the fridge are very high. I don't mind though, I don't like the idea of my kids helping themselves to snacks. Everything else in the house is accessible except for a few messy art supplies.

My daughter (4) has a low dresser and hanging rail in her wardrobe so can choose her own clothes and dress herself in the morning.

We don't have much food easily accessible because they would just snack all day long if we let them. Their cups, bowls, plates, and silverware are in places they can easily reach. They can reach all of their toys at all times and most of their books, minus some special ones we try to take extra great care of.

@Bao: Yes, putting away silverware was her chore since 2! :) Sorting skills. She doesn't do it everyday but she still knows it is her responsibility so I can ask her at anytime to do it.

@Andrea: The art supplies yes, all dishes except silverware and plates. They can reach everything in the fridge but we have one of those old ones where the fridge is super small/short haha!

I do the same thing. It's hard to think of something they can't get themselves. I would add plates/bowls, cups, silverware, and art supplies to your list (if you haven't done so). Also, keep the things they eat on low shelves in the fridge, too.

@808love: Great idea with the silverware, my oldest can reach but my youngest can't...maybe I should move it by the bowls so they can have access to those as well.

Silverware is in a low drawer. Small plastic bowls and cups are at a low place. She just doesn't have anything to put in it except water. But still, she always gets out her utensils/serving things on her own.

Art stuff: tape, crayons, markers, glue stick, paper paint etc. is all out for her.

What are some ways that you set up your home so that your LO's can more easily do things on their own?

Today I set up a self serve snack basket for the girls, it's only day one but wow...it's already taken a lot of stress off me now that they can grab a snack on their own. I keep several water bottles full in the fridge for easy access to fresh water. Most of their toys are at their level already (minus board games) so outside of helping them get lids off things, we are pretty set there. I'm trying to think of a few more ways I can set up our home to help the kids be more independent. I don't mind helping them but they LOVE to accomplish things on their own (most days)...any other ideas?
