@Iced Tea: That totally makes sense. We work with CNM's because they have practicing privileges at our local hospital, so if I transfer, they can stay with me and manage my care. In an emergency, I imagine having them in a role like a doula would be helpful.

Heads-up: a doula isn't licensed to offer actual health advice. But it is important to find someone you love!

I am switching my care right now (at about 15 weeks) to a pair of home birth midwives.

Because I was transferred from a birth center to hospital last time, I'm kind of going into this assuming we'd likely transfer but hoping things go smoothly so we don't have to. Make sense? If I have to transfer, they come along as a support person, which wasn't the case with the birth center midwives. That is the primary appeal for me, knowing for sure that I'm hiring two knowledgeable individuals that will for sure be there for me. I had a doula last time, but she didn't discuss the medical side of things with me at all.

I plan to hire a doula again, and honestly I think I'm more nervous about that choice. Last time it was last-minute, and I didn't really hire the right person for me. I'm trying to get a couple of interviews next week. Our local doulas book early!

@Mrs. Monkey: There is seriously nothing like being in your own bed (even the breakfast the midwives made seemed like the best food ever, haha).

@maddyz: Those ARE two very different births. How cool! I had a very fast labor with LO1, I'm kind of scared how much faster it could be this time. ;)

@littlejoy I think I was pretty classic first baby vers second.

Lo1 water broke at 5am I can consistent but mild contractions all day. Pumped a little in the late afternoon to see if that got things going, it didn't really. Ate a little dinner and my midwife came to check on me. Said to take a bath and go to bed, in the bath I realized things were picking up. It was slow and steady from then on. Doula came around 10:30, I started pushing just after 2am when my midwife came. Lo was born at 5:30am in the kitcheb after about 3 hours of pushing. I had no idea it had been that long. He was 9 pounds and 22.5". I needed 3 stitches.

Lo2 I had to weeks of pre labor and false starts. It was maddening. I got home from work a little early to clean the kitcheb before lo1 got home but decided to rest on the sofa for a minute. 10 minutes later I was calling everyone because I was pretty sure it was real this time. Midwives and my husband arrived around 6, midwives went to dinner. I was chatting between contractions and Durning then at this point but the were frequent. By the time the midwives came back at 9 contractions were getting hard. The rest is a blur, lo was born at 10:15pm, we hardly had a chance to get my pants off. He was 7 pounds 5oz and 21". The first thing I said was how small he is!

The first was slow and steady the fast.

I had a hospital birth with LO1 and a home birth with LO2. It wasn't really something that I had considered until my midwife brought up that I would be a good candidate for a home birth. In the end, I was so glad that I did it. I felt so much more relaxed, calm, and in control than I did at the hospital. The best part was getting into my own bed at the end of it. Overall, it was a really positive experience.

@maddyz: Really different? I'd love to hear more.

My first birth was crazy - just very fast and I don't remember a lot of it. If there are any differences, I hope that it's a little less intense with more room for me to remember and be intentional. Agree about it being such a personal choice ... and even though we had a perfect home birth the first time, I wanted to be sure we were approaching this pregnancy with the same decision making (like, does it make sense this time, etc.). As long as I have a healthy pregnancy, we decided it'll be the right choice again.

I've had two really different really lovely home births. It was 100% the right choice for us.

It's such a personal choice. But I will be forever grateful for the care a received from my midwives and their ability to hold space for my body to do it's thing.

I wanted to bump this thread!

We're pregnant with LO2, and are planning another homebirth with our CNM practice.

I'd love to start this thread again for a bit of support and place for us to share our feelings regarding our upcoming/past births.

I want to! Unfortunately this pregnancy I waited too long to find a midwife and now there are none in my entire CITY that are free for my due date.

On the upside, the hospitals here are a lot like birthing centres in the States from what I hear.

I will definitely be going for a homebirth next time!

We've leaned towards homebirth, but unfortunately have miscarried before getting far enough along to make plans. My mom had several babies at home, as have several of my good girlfriends.

@cyndistar3: The hospitals around here absolutely refuse to do them! Told my best friend that the only way she was getting a vaginal birth was to come in "with the baby between your legs"

@MzMarzipan: We're really praying that all goes well and we don't have to transfer. My midwife has only had to transfer 1 momma in the last 2 1/2 years and they had already suspected needing to do so b/c of low amniotic fluid. Here's to me NOT being #2! *going to read birth story now*

I had planned for a home birth. However, after 22 hours of labor, 2.5 hours of pushing, too much meconium and contractions being 5 mins apart despite being fully dilated, we transferred to the hospital. I would choose a home birth again when it is time for #2! You can read my son's birth story here milo.lashkari.com. My husband wrote it and it talks a bit about his coming to accept a home birth!

I am not because I have no idea where I will be living when our baby is born but after we are settled somewhere I might consider it if we have another. Our youth pastors wife has delivered all 5 of their children at home! We are going to a midwifery though and it is basically a house and looks nothing like a hospital so I love it :)

The hospital won't do VBAC?? that seems strange :/

@cyneswith That's stinky! We don't have birthing center options around here and since I'm going for a VBAC my only options were homebirth or surgery. DH knows I don't want another cesarean so he's pretty supportive!

I'm really excited about ours (of course that's still a ways from now), but I was wondering if any other hellobee mommies were going for a homebirth or have homebirthed.
