This was DS's 3rd cake. I made it with my mom--our first fondant try.

Honestly, I'm not saying this because they are so darn easy, but some of my favorite cakes are just Texas sheet cakes. Pioneer Woman's chocolate one is good, but I've also done a plain vanilla or almond white sheet cake with a cream cheese frosting. They feed a crowd and the best part is I always think a Texas sheet cake tastes better the day after its baked!

http://thepioneerwoman.com/cooking/the_best_chocol/

http://www.friedalovesbread.com/2011/12/quick-easy-dessert-for-group-white.html

The other great thing about them is they are so easy to decorate since its sitting in the sheet pan. I think for a boy, a dinosaur theme would be really fun - like you can top a sheet cake with crushed Oreo crumbs for dirt and bury dinosaur bones in it, like an excavation site, or you can frost it green and add dinosaur figurines on top, maybe even some palm tree figurines and a volcano made of cake.

They can also easily be made into hockey rinks, football fields, and soccer fields.

But if you want to do more of a layer cake situation, I'm a sucker for a traditional yellow cake with chocolate frosting.

These are good recipes:

http://www.bakerella.com/finally-i-found-it/

http://sallysbakingaddiction.com/2014/08/24/moist-yellow-cupcakes-with-milk-chocolate-frosting/

I don't know if your son has a favorite book yet, but those are always really sweet to see. Based on what my son likes, I think a Dear Zoo themed cake would be really cute, like if you had little animal figurines on a cake.

I'd love to see pics of homemade birthday cakes, plus recipes and tips! I made my son's 3rd birthday cake and want to make my baby's first birthday cake. We are inviting 60, expect maybe 40 or so, so I'm looking for bigger cakes. For my DS1 I did a 11 x 15 two layer chocolate construction site cake (very easy) but for my DS2 I want to do something more delicate.
