Update: I reviewed my Beanilla order and I ordered 24 4-oz amber glass bottles from them as well as the vanilla beans.

Something to keep in mind if anyone on your list has allergies... vodka, bourbon and whiskey contain gluten. If you're gifting to anyone with Celiac in their family, I'd rethink this (or use GF vodka and let them know that you did)

Stoli makes a GF grain vodka (corn) or use an all potato variety. Otherwise, most vodkas are made with a mash that includes grains.

@yoursilverlining: Exactly! I think this is easy enough for me to try to make and give to friends who like to bake.

@Mrs. Oatmeal: ooooh - I could try a batch with vodka and then a batch with bourbon. I love the idea of infused olive oil too!

@alphagam84: I like the idea of making it a kit and then people can choose which vodka or bourbon on their own. Thanks!

@Pancakes: Thanks! I have not heard of beanilla - I am going to check that website out.

It looks like I have found a gift to make for the holidays - thanks all! If it does not seemed infused enough after a month, I may keep them and give them as gifts later on in the winter.

I made some as favors for my sister's bridal shower. It was super easy, but I let it steep for many months. (I made them over Christmas for her June shower.)

My mom makes it every year, I love using it! I think she gets a good response from everyone she gifts it to. She also makes homemade linen spray that's popular too!

I'm making some right now, will be ready at the end of the month! It's a kit my mom gave me (just jar, vanilla beans, and instructions) and I just added the alcohol. I think it'd be a fantastic gift!

I did this a couple of years ago intending to give as gifts but I started too close to Christmas so I ended up keeping it and using it myself. Two years later I am still using it. I think I followed a recipe from Joy the Baker. I ordered beans from Beanilla and used bourbon. I bought some food safe brown glass bottles but I can't remember where I got them from. When I'm close to running out I'll definitely make more!

We did!
We made it with vodka/vanilla beans, but a friend made it with bourbon and said it was amazing. We've also made infused olive oils, homemade BBQ sauce and flavoured vodka!

I have! I've made homemade vanilla and also gifted some to some coworkers who I knew could use it (but we don't normally exchange gifts). They've asked me for refills, so I know it's used :). The hardest part for me was finding glass bottles that I felt comfortable using (read: food quality).

I made it last year and will again this year. It's SO EASY. Like, could not be easier. You literally just put about 10 whole vanilla beans into a jug of vodka. Leave it alone for several months, shaking it up like once a week or so. Then strain into bottles, slap on a cute label and gift it.

@autumnleaves: I did this two years ago and I'm STILL using the extract. I followed Smitten Kitchen's "recipe" - https://smittenkitchen.com/2015/01/make-your-own-vanilla-extract/

I didn't gift it, but I totally could have. It makes a ton of really good extract, and that stuff is so expensive!

Has anyone made or used homemade vanilla extract? I am thinking about doing this for gifts this year but I've only used store brands. Would you use this if you were gifted it? Are there other homemade treats that you like to gift or receive as gifts? Infused vodkas? Pickles? Desserts?
