Lots of educational stuff can be fun! I wouldn't wrap up a workbook and pass it off as a present but some learning toys (sorting trays etc) would be fun!

I love this group! It's so nice to get varied and respectful responses. I will chat with my husband about it. I'm leaning towards just scaling back a bit on Christmas and not wrapping them as gifts. I think what's getting me is I know she's going to love what I'm planning to buy but opening it won't be any fun- whereas I certainly could wrap cereal and it would be!

I think it sounds like a nice gift. I wrap up cereal boxes for my kids and they love it. My mom did the same for me. As long as it's something LO likes I don't think they'll care if it could be considered a legitimate or crappy gift.

Why would it be a crappy gift? It's thoughtful!

I personally would have loved it if someone thought to gift us Montessori materials.

Which materials are you getting? I think Montessori works qualify as "exciting" gifts. Be prepared though to have her play with them before you can give a proper lesson though.

Personally, I'm kind of against practical gifts too, unless it's something they want. I feel like as a parent it's our responsibility to provide the necessities and a gift should be something the receiver enjoys.

We sort of do this. LO is in K. We mostly keep the gifts that are homeschool-ish to the 'extra' parts of what we do for homeschool. For example, he got a chess set for his birthday, some read-aloud type books, and a Lego set. I would probably not do something like a textbook as a gift, but we have done experience gifts that go along with what he's studying and we'll do that again. I vote not crappy (unless the plan is just to get a child size broom and dust pan or something, in which case I'd recommend something like art supplies too)!

I would only gift her the exciting homeschool materials. For instance if you're getting her a nature studies guide I would only give her the guidebook if it comes with a magnifying glass, etc.

I think I'm over analyzing. My mom had this big thing against practical Christmas gifts, they had to be fun and exciting to open so it's kind of carried over for me with my own daughter (even though I'm annoyed at not getting new spatulas for my birthday.)

We will be homeschooling for preschool and I want to get her some Montessori materials. I can either but them for Christmas plus a couple of small things or I can wait until February-ish after I've saved up the money again. Is this a crappy gift?
