I never went to any kind of preschool, just right into Kindergarden (no junior). I was super shy and cried a lot, but eventually got over it! My younger siblings didn't have any preschool either and they were fine. I was just a wuss!

I was an elementary Montessori teacher and I love Montessori but sadly where we live there isn't a good option for when we have a lo. My first reaction was that we will just homeschool but I have started to think that it will wind up better for us to send lo to a play based program (even like a mom's day out) two mornings a week and do the rest homeschooling. My logic there is the same as others have mentioned-- I can cover the academics side no problem, learning how to deal with others, listen to a different grown-up and all of those skills are harder to teach at home. There are definitely ways but given the options in our community I think we will probably go this route. All of this is still hypothetical though since we are still ttc.

That being said, I have seen several people successfully homeschool for preschool and then send their lo to traditional kindy without any issues and usually they are ahead of the curve. There are some really great programs out there for you to pull from and honestly as long as you are keeping education at the forefront of your mind you will probably surpass most of the academic milestones one would normally look for in a preschool setting.

If for some reason I'm not working, I will homeschool preschool and maybe even kindergarten. However, I will probably be working so he will likely go to school. However preschool isn't cheap in general- around here it's just a glorified daycare. If we did the Montessori schools, their curriculum are much better, but if I had to pay the Montessori tuition on top of paying additional child care- we couldn't afford it.

I should add we're adding a weekly moms group at my church that has a semi structured curriculum for the kiddos & we have another mommy that we get together with a couple times a month.

We haven't joined the homeschool group here yet bc G struggled alot with his peers (he went to regular school for pre k - 1st) & is pretty self conscious about still being behind in some areas. I thought we could see how the first half of this year goes again & then revisit the topic. He does play soccer & will probably start basketball this year so he's starting to "get out there".

@Running Elley: we are thinking about this. We're going to start DS in a once a week daycare so he sees other kids but we're thinking about homeschooling for preschool.
My mom homeschooled us for preschool. I remember going to school and being sad that nearly everyone already had friends and I didn't know anyone. I never really fit in with my class all the way up through high school. It could've just been the group of kids, though.

My mother in law is a retired montessori teacher, and she is going to homeschool my daughter until first grade. I'm so excited. She's going to gather a little group of children, because socialization is one of the most important parts of it.

Ok, here's my take on the whole Montessori thing. I've taken a course to become certified in the Montessori method for preschoolers because my thought was to send my son to a tradtional preschool for the socialization, but set up our playspaces at home in the Montessori style.

IMO, the simplest thing you can do Montessori style is practical life activities, because you don't need special equipment. A lot of the Montessori activities are complicated to recreate, because you need the materials. With practical life, it's about being able to recreate activities, so it can really be anything, like pouring water, sorting things according to size, matching like colored objects.

So, long story short, I did also research Montessori programs around my area and they are just too expensive for our budget.

@Running Elley: I've thought about it. I would love to do a co-op but the only mamas I've met who might be interested would be wanting to do it from a religious perspective, which I'm not interested in. I will probably pursue it further when he's older depending on our preschool options. There are nothing but traditional/conventional schooling options where we live at present!

I think the internet would be a great resource as well, you could share curriculums etc. and share the burden of research and planning!

Agree 100% with banana. Yes, they do "learn" some things in preschool, but one of the benefits is the socialization factor, learning how to be in a classroom situation (sitting still, listening to the teacher, listening to an authority figure that isnt mom and dad, etc).

@runsyellowlites: I've been looking at Montessori activities for toddlers too and trying to incorporate them and some of the principles into daily activity for E too. I really like it and he does too!

@Leialou: Do you remember how you felt when you started kinder? Was it overwhelming or did you not have any problems adjusting? I really would love the opportunity to teach E to read :)

@artbee: That's the only thing that would give me pause about pulling the trigger. I definitely don't want him to be at a disadvantage when he starts school.

@mrsmate: I think that a coop would be an ideal situation actually! I was homeschooled though 8th grade and we were involved in a coop for a few years of it and we all really enjoyed it. I think part of my wanting to do this recently has also been wanting to have more reason to keep E close to me as well...which I think has been triggered by expecting our second!

I've been thinking about pulling DD from daycare (she's scheduled to move up to the preschool room in Nov) and homeschooling if I can join/start a coop. I don't know how common this is, but I feel like she's become LESS independent since starting daycare 2x/wk 6mo ago (she really wants her mommy when she's not at school). Also, now that we're expecting another LO, a part of me wants to savor every last minute I can get with her. I'm really torn!

LO is 2 and still at home with me, but we do plan on having her go to preschool part time when she turns 3. I'm not going to home school for elementary so I want her to get used to the structure of school before throwing her in full time.

@banana: That's a really good point actually- I do think that is one of the main benefits of preschool in general. I think it's probably something that we need to keep an eye on as he gets older and if it's getting close and it seems like the extra socialization will be beneficial to him we can reevaluate.

My stepmom homeschooled me for preschool. My first time in a classroom setting was kindergarten. She taught me how to read before I went to school. I remember sitting at the table and working together every day. She must have had some sort of schedule.

We homeschool overall so it's definitely on the plans for P & any other kiddos we have. I've been working on planning out the years curriculum this week (we start in October & do a year round type schedule) and just started pinning Montessori type activities for P to have her own "school" even as a toddler.

I'm still definitely really new to the Montessori activities & outlook but I think it'll be really great & hopefully even add some techniques to how we do G's schooling as well!

I think one of the main benefits of preschool is socialization and imitating and learning from peers. My son has learned much more from his preschool friends than from any structured activity. I think homeschooling would be great as long as your LO was able to get some socialization throughout the week (playdates, indoor play gyms, etc). Otherwise, I think it can definitely work out!

Has anyone done this/thought about it?

I know I still have awhile (LO is turning 1 next month) to figure out what we want to do for preschool but lately I've been thinking a lot about maybe wanting to homeschool DS for preschool. Ideally I'd want him to go to a Montessori preschool but I'm not sure that it'll be in the budget. It definitely isn't now and I don't see things changing a ton by then.

Just curious about what experiences anyone has had :)
