@matador84: http://www.thecarcrashdetective.com/2014/07/3-across-installations-pilot.html/

"The 2009-2015 generation Pilot is 79 in wide and 191 in long, or 3 inches wider and longer than the previous generation. As a result, generally, any seat combination that works in the prior generation Pilot will also work in the current generation.

It is best to install an infant seat (e.g., the KeyFit 30) in the 2nd row right outboard seat instead of a convertible (e.g., the NextFit) when attempting 3 across if access to the 3rd row is required, as it will be easier to remove an infant seat from a base to provide 3rd row access than it will be to continually install and remove the convertible."

To update: We bought a 2014 Pilot a few months ago and I LOVE IT. Seriously, I have never bought used before, only new, but we got a great deal on it and it was a lease turn in so it's in excellent shape with super low miles and I love driving it.

Needing help though--I currently have DS in a Britax Pioneer in the 2nd row passenger side and DD in a Britax Marathon 2nd row driver side. When LO3 arrives, they will be in a Chicco KeyFit. I want to avoid having to use the 3rd row if at all possible (obviously we have the bench in the 2nd row). Does anyone know how I can configure the seats to make this work? Another tricky part is my oldest two get out for school in a drive line and they have to exit the vehicle on the right side. I'm trying to avoid reconfiguring car seats and playing around with it while 8 months pregnant to see if anyone has already done it for themselves. :-)

Okay so we test drove an Odyssey today and a Pilot--and put both kids car seats in and everything. In hindsight I wish I had brought their old infant seat to strap it in too so I could see configuration for 3 kids in carseats. Anyway, I liked the Odyssey better as a mom-mobile and DH liked the Pilot better. In the end we really looked at the 2 and I think the Pilot will be better even though there are still some things I don't like. It's a tough call still!

@lemondrop: AWD is important to us! We have a cabin in the mountains and I have seen too many large SUVS (Navigators, Suburbans) get stuck before!

@Truth Bombs: That would totally be us too.

I am dying to test drive a minivan and see if I can convince DH to fall in love. I think the Honda Odyssey would be great for us. I am so dashed by how little trunk space the Pilot has I'm sad to have to write it off.

This has been our last two months- we wanted SUV with 3rd row and AWD. We loved the Pilot, but could not justify the cost compared to other similar models (Sorento, Pathfinder, Santa Fe, Highlander). I was having a very hard time finding AWD and middle bench (I wanted the option to add one more person if possible) in our area and the cost of the trims was surprising.

We ended up buying a Nissan Pathfinder last week with everything we wanted for a much better price. The dimensions of the car were the biggest compared to the other similar vehicles. Trunk space is still tight with the third row up, but it also has a good sized space underneath the trunk to keep all of those kid extras out of the way.

@matador84: just as an alternative idea we love our Ford Flex- it's great because it's low like a mini van so easy to get T in and out of her car seat. Plus when she's big enough she can get in by herself. We opted for second row captain chairs- but I was not picky. It was the last 15' new on the lot in December 16 so we got a good deal. I would have taken the bench. But we are only planning on 2 kids.

@MommySLP: @skipra: Originally I was thinking 3 in middle row, but my two right now are such chatter boxes (ages 4 and 3), I don't think they would ever let the baby sleep! I was hoping to split them up my older 2 in back and baby in middle.

A lot of people around here with 3 or more have suburbans and I was hoping to NOT enter into suburban territory! DH refuses a minivan.

@matador84: I have an older pilot and 3 kids. My kids are younger and my oldest still needs help buckling his car seat so I have all three in the middle row. It is rare that we have the three rows up and need a lot of trunk space. It did happen recently but we only had one third row passenger so that we only put up one side of the third row. Space-wise I have no complaints but personally I prefer smaller cars and hate the terrible gas mileage.

@matador84: I'm pregnant with #3 and have a pilot (which I LOVE) but agree on the trunk space with all 3 rows up. I will either put all 3 across the middle row or put my oldest in the back with 2 of the back seats down. We've done it with other kids in our car like this and it's been fine. But I really didn't want a bigger SUV or a van, so this was a compromise. I also have racks on the top we could use, but haven't needed to yet.

Another reason we went with the Odyssey is that you can pull out the middle seat int he middle row and make it be captains chairs. So you kinda get the best of both worlds, captains chairs or a wide 3 across bench in the middle row. Plus 3 latch hooks in the back row too.

The new Odyssey is amazing! I'm the one dead set against a minivan since I would be driving it. But, if there's one to sway me it would be that one. We've also been planning on buying the Pilot this year and we want the bench seat because fitting three in the second row is more spacious. Trying to fit 3 in the third row, unless maybe it's all kids, could get tight. Have to say, didn't notice that as much with the van. If it's your primary car and you really want a van I would go down that path!

We have the 2016 Touring model with a bench in the 2nd row. I prefer the bench because it gives us the option of an adult sitting in between the car seats if needed. I really like the vents in the third row, so it's cool enough back there.

I dislike some of the safety options, like it won't let me drive with the door open or use all of the functionality of the GPS when we are in motion, but those are pretty standard these days. I also dislike that the driver's seat moves all the way back when you turn off the car because it pushes the rear facing carseat.

@Truth Bombs: Ah, so convincing. I just realized yesterday that only Elite models and up have the captain's in the 2nd row. I would prefer seating for one more, but I'm not sure I want 3 car seats in the middle row anyway.

I definitely want AWD and right now no dealership near up has the bench in the 2nd row.
