@ShootingStar: thanks, good to be realistic so we are not disappointed. And like you say, even 65 and cloudy will be nice, coming from the northeast!

I actually just moved to FL in April. My parents live in St. Pete and we've been coming to the Tampa/St. Pete area since I was a kid. Most often in February/March. And from my experience it can be hit or miss on the weather. It would also sometimes be frustrating with kids because the high would be say 80, but in the morning when they need an activity, it would be more like 65. Later in the day while they were napping it would hit the high. So that makes it hard to plan to do the beach or the pool.

We always liked coming at that time though because living in the northeast, we really needed a break from winter. Just don't assume that it'll hot or beach weather.

Another option to look into would be Key West. It would be warmer and there's lots to walk around and see.

Thanks everyone, this is extremely helpful! I knew people here would have great ideas.

Destin looks great, but maybe a bit too cold for February. Sounds like Sanibel is the way to go! Now I just have to get over the sticker shock . . . I am seeing prices of about $6,000 for a 2BR condo that is walkable to the beach. Yikes! Maybe we will only do two weeks . . .

@lindseykaye so I live in that area of south Florida (close by at least). Glad they had a good time, but I would definitely not recommend it for a family vacation month. Traffic and everything is crazy here, it's not super family friendly IMO, and the beaches are crappy compared to the Gulf side. The BIG upside is that it will likely be warm here!

I would look at the gulf side further south if I was picking. More laid back/family friendly, but warm. North and central Florida can be chilly that time of year.

Our family has been to Sanibel many times (visits for generations now) and recently we've been going to a place called Mitchell's Sandcastles, though there are a ton of rentals in the area. This one works for us since several families can all stay together but each has their own cottage of varying sizes (1-3 br). They have kitchens, porches (some decks, some screened). It is beachside with direct access and there is also a small pool and little swing set. Not fancy, but comfortable. There's not really a 'downtown' to Sanibel that I remember but there are tons of bike paths and it's very pedestrian friendly.

I'm from the Sarasota area which is much bigger (and much more expensive) but there are a lot of arts and culture things, tons of different beaches to explore, and lots of kid-friendly fun (museums, parks, splash pads) if you might like that area. Downtown is walkable but you'd need to drive to get there - good food, etc. but not tons of kid things downtown.

The St. Petersburg area is also really lovely. Great beaches, food, and cultural things to do (the Dali museum is phenomenal). You're close enough to Tampa to hit up additional museums, the Florida Aquarium or Zoo Tampa at Lowery Park.

I'm sticking to this part of the gulf coast because I'm most familiar with it but there is SO MUCH beauty in FL. But, the further south you go the warmer it will be in February. Where I live in the N. Central area of the state Jan/Feb can be our coldest months so with that in mind I wouldn't pick the panhandle. I've heard really great things about the area north of Ft. Lauderdale, but haven't been myself. I remember the folks at Young House Love vacationed there and had a great time. https://www.younghouselove.com/family-spring-break-florida/

Hope this helps! And I hope you have a wonderful time :)

Sanibel is great for bike riding! Very family friendly and not bad/fast traffic which I feel like is an issue some other places. My parents went to Destin this year and really liked the slower pace.

We loved Sanibel. Easy. Affordable. Condos with kitchens right on the beach. Plenty to do for kids.

Bees -- a (hopefully) fun non-COVID question for those who are familiar with Florida!

I am due this fall and my family is thinking about spending the month of February somewhere in Florida. It will be the last month of my leave and the only month of my husband's leave. Where would you go?

More information to help narrow it down: we have a four year old who loves to bike and scoot around and spend time at the beach. We are big on walking, so near a walkable downtown would be lovely. Swimming weather would be a bonus (ie 75/80), but we are from the Northeast, so even 65/70 would still be nicer than back home. We would be sad if it rained a lot.

We are thinking that for a month, it will likely make sense to rent a home. Our budget is $3,000 or less (ideally less).

Any ideas? Can be general area (Destin? West Palm Beach?) or a specific city or neighborhood. Or best of all, a rental property that you loved and that is available!

Pretend COVID will not be an issue. (Yes, I know that it likely will, but let's pretend, otherwise it's not any fun.)

Thanks in advance!
