@butterbean: so sorry for you both!!! my LOs get a little bump on their skin and i lose sleep over it so i am feeling for you right now! i hate to see them in pain and it sucks when you feel helpless. lots of good advice here. would definitely avoid WIPING and go with rinsing and blotting until all is clear. definitely don't shy away from getting babe looked at for any possible infection as they get those easily, some more than others. thinking of you both!

@MamaG: i took the advice of many of the bees here and i noticed a difference when we would wipe her with a washcloth (not wipes), air dry for a few minutes and then apply triple paste...we did frequent diaper changes...

hope this helps!

Bumpity bump. Any other suggestions? LO has been pooping overnight (and more frequently during the day too). Unfortunately, we don't know about the overnight until morning. She's terribly red and there are some spots that look as though the skin is breaking. I will try lotrimin tonight as suggested above.

We've been putting on a thick layer of Triple Paste or Corona cream or our go to diaper cream - Dr. Smiths.

Agree with @mrs. wagon - that's what we do. Diaper free time in the sun is really good and i agree with the other suggestions for the athlete's foot cream. We'd also dry the bum area with the hairdryer after a bath.

I absolutely agree with everything @mrs. wagon: said. LIFE CHANGING!

BUT, have you checked to see if it's a yeast infection? If so, normal diaper cream and remedies won't work and you'll need to use Lotramin (athlete's foot) cream + thick diaper cream 3-4x/day to clear it up.

Also, if nothing else works, take your baby in. One of my babies needs to have prescription diaper cream (not always covered by insurance) to heal her diaper rash wounds.

The worst diaper rash we've had so far was cleared by Balmax. I also stopped using wipes (used moist paper towels instead), was really careful about leaving no moisture after wiping, and did lots of diaper free time (mostly naps) which was incredibly gross and messy, but we did whatever it took... The doctor also recommended an OTC steroid cream, but that was more for symptom relief than to cure the rash.

Hope LO feels better soon!

I use the squirt bottle I got fromthe hospital for myself to squirt water on her butt, wipe with gentle cotton pads (like the cosmetic kinds you can get), then make sure bum is 100% dry (I'd pat gently with paper towel or cloth), then layer on whatever ointment!

DD is finally just recovering from a bad diaper rash. I use cloth diapers and wipes and tried three over the counter creams and coconut oil before going to the doctor. One doctor gave me a steroid cream which didn't help at all. The next doctor gave me an anti-fungal cream and an antibacterial cream and now FINALLY the rash is almost healed.

No wipes, switch to using a washcloth and using warm water with baking soda. Put baking soda in her bath too. Tons of diaper free time; I know hard with diarrhea. Making sure her bum is completely dry after changes. Pat dry instead of wipe. Use a layer of coconut oil then diaper cream on top.

Poor baby.

Has she been having diarrhea? LO had really bad almost blistered skin after diarrhea. I washed her and then let it air-dry l, and then used THICK desitin to clear it up. I would definitely consider calling your ped though. Hope you find a solution soon!

We dealt with this constantly. So sad. The skin was all completely raw like one big open wound.

This is how we dealt with it, and how we got it to clear up quickly each time it happened:

No wipes-- use a bulb sucker with warm water to squirt water onto their bottom to clean them off, then dab with a soft clean washcloth to get all pee/poop off their skin. Let it drip down into the dirty diaper to avoid messes.

Then-- this is the important part-- DIAPER FREE time for at least 15 min to get the skin completely bone dry. We put towels down in a play area in case he went again while diaper free.

Once the skin is bone dry, then apply a thin layer of Clotrimazole (anti fungal, over the counter cream), then a THICK layer of any diaper cream that is zinc based (we used Triple Paste). The thicker the better. Then diaper.

The idea is to get the skin/wound completely dry and irritant free (so no wipes). Then apply the anti fungal (many times it's a yeasty rash) then a thick layer of barrier cream (zinc based diaper cream) to stop any pee or poo from getting in.

Use water instead of wipes, and agreed re anti fungal cream. Our pediatrician suggested Lotrimin (the one with Clotrimazole as an active ingredient) once their rashes were open sores/yeast infections. I mixed half that, half Desitin in my fingers and it cleared up pretty quickly.

When it's really bad, I also do little sitz baths in the sink with warm water and baking soda a few times a day.

My kids both got horrible diaper rash from time to time where it would have all these little bleeding spots and be really painful for them :( The best product we found was Butt Paste, we got smaller tubes at Target and large tubs on amazon for about 16 bucks. We still put it on every night before bed. Also leaving them diaper free is supposed to help - easier said than done if they have a stomach bug but even at 10 mos you could hold LO over the potty every 30 minutes, who knows. We would put on training underwear so there wouldn't be pee squirting everywhere but at least you know immediately when they are wet and just wash those underwear. They were loose enough on the babies not to hold any moisture next to their body.

I'd give her pediatrician a call. LO had a really terrible diaper rash from a virus, and once it broke skin, I called. They wanted to see him to be sure it wasn't an infection. They recommended an anti-fungal cream (we actually used cream designed for athlete's foot) twice/day with a thick layer of triple paste at every diaper change. The triple past is super expensive, but that combined with a morning and night AF cream cleared it up.

My 10.5 month old has a horrible diaper rash - it's so bad that the skin is raw...

She is fighting off a stomach bug and she dreads diaper changes cuz I know it hurts her...I use desitin but it doesn't seem to help...

Any suggestions to help treat her horrible diaper rash?
