@woodentulip: That must have been awful! I'm glad your daughter wasn't hurt too badly. What is it with people leaving dangerous items behind furniture? Your post reminded me of one of the most embarrassing moments of my life: when I was in 6th grade I accidentally sat on a cactus at Girl Scout camp. I guess I thought it was a tree stump? I don't remember the particulars, but I do remember being mortified - even though it wouldn't be a big deal now.

Not quite the same, but when my younger daughter was about 10 months old or so--not yet walking, but very mobile, we went to visit my parents. My mom loves plants and has a zillion all over. She had a cactus that she had forgotten about. Behind a chair. My daughter found it, when she crawled all through the dropped needles and stuff that were all over the floor. We spent hours pulling them out. In retrospect we probably should have taken her to the hospital...but she's ok now!

Not scary like chemicals I know, but another instance of things you never think kids will find...until they do. :(

Oh my gosh that's so scary!! So glad he is ok. You have just prompted me to go check out the kitchen and bathroom in the rental house I just got in. These kids are intent on giving us heart attacks.

I was visiting my parents with DS last week and we had lunch at my aunt's house. He's 18 months and was wandering around, poking his nose into everything as usual. We moved things that were obviously dangerous/breakable (candles, vases, etc.). Then, while we were eating, DS pulled out a can of Raid from behind the couch and put it up to his mouth, pretending to drink it, like he does with anything remotely resembling a water bottle. THANK GOODNESS he didn't spray it in his mouth/face and I got it away from him. There was no type of guard over the spray button so he easily could have pressed it. I was on edge for the rest of the visit. I feel so grateful and lucky that nothing bad happened, but I felt so guilty.
