There are also books based on the tv show Spirit: Riding Free that you could check out.

I am a fan of the classics already mentioned, but a colleague recently reminded me of the Heartland series by Lauren Brooke (also made into a tv series) - I can't "vouch" for them personally, but worth looking into.

Anything by Marguerite Henry (Misty of Chincoteague, etc) is great.

So you mean all the Saddleclub books I have in storage may be worth $$ when I haul them out?? :silly: I was a crazy obsessed horse girl and never grew out of it.

@PinkElephant: I LOVED the saddle club. I was looking for the, for my 8 yo niece. I am a horse nut still and own a horse probably thanks to those books haha. I think you can find them on eBay? Also another vote for the thoroughbred series. Misty of chincoteague is also a classic. Smoky the cow horse. Justin Morgan had a horse. I know others have recommended a few of those but I can personally also vouch for them.

Cowgirl Kate and cocoa came up when I googled and looks cute.

We have been reading Cowgirl Kate and Cocoa with my 5.5 DS - a shorter chapter book but very upbeat, cute and easier reading. I think there are 6 books in the series.

I just finished reading aloud an abridged version of Black Beauty to my almost 5 year old. My only wish was that there were a few more illustrations.

Justin Morgan Had a Horse is a classic about the famous breed of horses. King of the Wind by the same author won the Newberry. Oh, and Misty of Chincoteague.

The Horse and His Boy by CS Lewis is part of the Narnia series, but it works fine as a standalone adventure.

The Little White Horse is about a unicorn but is up the same alley. The writing is beautiful, and JK Rowling credits this book as inspiring her to write Harry Potter. It is quite Christian though--one character used to be a vehement atheist before he fell off his horse and hit his head, at which point he became a preacher. I personally theorize he had brain damage. ;)

I have all the “Saddle Club” books on a shelf, waiting for the day when my kids will read them! :silly: I loved these books! I don’t know what is or is not in print, but I also read (and loved) the Thoroughbred series (about a race horse called Wonder): https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thoroughbred_(series). Also, it looks like eBay has some of the Saddle Club books if you’re okay buying them used?

As a young girl, I loved books like Black Beauty and the Black Stallion but they may be a bit long and advanced for a 6 year old. Try this one:

Any recommendations for books about girls and horses for bedtime reading (mostly me doing the reading) with my six year old daughter?

DD1 and I just finished reading "Me and Katie (The Pest)" by Ann M. Martin (yes, the author of the Babysitter's Club books), and the poor girl cried her eyes out when it was over and I had to tell her there wasn't another book in a series about the characters. Seriously, I cannot tell you how heartbroken she is. It's adorable, but sad at the same time! So....I'm looking for some other books she might love as much.

I remember a series called "The Saddle Club" from when I was young, but it appears the books are out of print and our library doesn't have them. We've already exhausted the horse-themed books in the "Babysitter's Little Sister" series by the same author. :silly:

Thanks for your ideas!!!
