@LindsayInNY: with both of my kids I got really bad swelling in my legs after delivery. I got a few bags of saline coupled with being in bed for most of the delivery/induction and then just not up and walking around as much as I normally do after giving birth. The swelling was not fun and the compression stockings really help. I work in hospitals where TED hose (hospital compression stocking) are giving as a matter of course for most patients, so I found they help in most cases.

Sorry. I read your reply as “what compression” not why. Ha.

These are fun!
Needed: my own pillow with different colored pillowcase
Earplugs
Chapstick
Deodorant
Minis of my fav toiletries for that first freaking amazing shower.
Camera
Long charger cables
Black robe and black tank top.
Compression stockings (I brought my own but they had some)
Comfortably loose yoga pants for going home
Nipple balm and the gel soothie pads for the sore nips

Didn’t need: pretty much everything else
I brought a boppy but it’s really terrible for me for the newborn phase (and the LCs there hate it). I should have brought my breast friend

Nice to have: Gatorade, big nylon bags to lug shit home with. Tinted moisturizer and a natural
lip gloss so I didn’t look like total death in al of the pics that are taken after

Didn't need: socks (hospital provides their own), diapers (same), toiletries other than a hairbrush and toothbrush, nightgown/bathrobe, nipple cream (the kid hated the smell).

Did need: books, phone charger, a couple tops that work for nursing, stretchy pants in a couple different sizes (wasn't sure which one would fit) for leaving the hospital. I also wore pants in the hospital the second time, they were much better at keeping hospital undies in place than the nightgown I packed the first time.

The only things I’d add to the above are nursing tanks that you can just throw a robe or button down night shirt over, nice toiletries that make you feel slightly pampered, and your own (dark) fluffy towel from home. Oh and I wished that I’d remember to find extra long phone charging cords!

-Sports bras (I don't nurse)
-3 sets of pajamas

I wasted space on diapers and sanitary pads not knowing I could use as many as I wanted from the hospital. I also never used the makeup I packed for photos - I just didn't care how I looked. My husband also never ate the snacks I packed for him.

Regardless I guess I didn't really want it pitch black either (so I could see the baby well), so even if they didn't require a light on I would have wanted the night light.

I brought my own pillow with me given the fact it was mentioned over and over on HB to do, but DH was a butt and refused to get it out of the car.

All I really needed was loungy PJs, elastic band for my hair, shower shoes, toiletries, phone charger, something to read, and something to write with & on. I wish I had already figured out a good nursing or sports bra to have on hand like Bravo. I didn't really think DH would have been such a stickler for following the no eating rules (nurses following doctor's orders), but I would definitely pack some kind of snack next time post-birth. When my doctor came to see me she was shocked I hadn't eaten yet.

I loved having a nightlight. The nurses wanted me to sleep with a light on in the bathroom and I asked about the night light and they loved the idea. I was able to sleep with it being darker than leaving the bathroom light on.

I honestly didn't even use a lot of what I packed! I think we used:

- Toiletries
- Nightgown that buttoned down
- Sleep/nursing bra
- Phone charger
- Camera
- Snacks
- Going home outfit for DD
- Clothes for me to wear home

Things we didn't use:

- Most of the items I planned to use for setting up the environment (battery operated candles, essential oil, music, etc)
- Comfort items (heatable rice pack, self-cooling towel, massage tools)
- Book/crossword puzzles
- Diapers

I wish I'd brought:

- Nursing pillow
- My own pillow for sleeping

Phones and chargers
Nice camera
Nursing tank and pants (I think I packed two pairs though which I definitely didn't need)
Toothbrush/toothpaste and basic shower toiletries (hotel sized)
DH - whatever he wore, and he brought a pillow and blanket

I think I used a pillow from home too but I definitely did not need that and I never used my boppy either at the hospital (just used pillows for breastfeeding).

We used our phone chargers, DSLR, birth playlist, back of snacks and champagne, baby book (got a second set of footprints done in there, which was cute), my contact lens stuff. Did not use: pretty much any of the clothing I brought, since I just stayed in the gown (usually pulled down to my waist since I was working on breastfeeding constantly) even after the birth. I never felt like showering so didn't use most of my toiletries or other stuff. But my birth was 2.5 hours long so may not be typical.

Honestly, I needed very little. I way overpacked for DD1 and barely packed anything for DD2. What I used with DD2 -

- Phone/charger (super long cable)
- iPad (she was in NICU so I was watching shows while I pumped)
- Leggings, nursing bra, comfy clothes for post birth
- Clothes for DD2
- Some snacks

That was really it. Hospital had pretty much all toiletries, aftercare and baby stuff, they even have socks!

Spinoff of winniebee's thread- of the items in your hospital bag, what did and didn't you end up needing? I'm generally a light packer but I still had some items I could have left out.

Needed:
Toiletries- same stuff I pack for any night away
Change of clothes to go home in
Outfit for baby to go home in
Kindle & iPod (for my induction where active labor didn't start right away)
Big water bottle
Planner/notebook
Snacks
Phone/charger
Camera
For DH- swim trunks for when I was laboring in the shower

Didn't need:
Maternity nightgown- wore hospital gowns the whole time
Socks- wore hospital socks
2nd change of clothes- don't know why I packed this
