I wish I had brought a plain white onesie and a special blanket for the in-hospital photos. I did not think I would buy them, but the photographer did a nice job and it was a super convenient way to get newborn photos done without much hoopla. If I ever have another, I'll take a better outfit and backdrop for my baby's photos.

Also, first baby, I packed everything. Second baby, I packed the following: robe, slippers, toiletries, book, iPad, going home outfit for baby. Done! My hospital had everything else I needed.

The one thing that I would have liked to have had but didn't was a small clock. There wasn't one in the delivery room, and I didn't like having no sense of how much time was passing.

Other essentials:

lip balm
a big towel from home (the ones provided were teeny)
hard candy (my throat was so sore after groaning through labor)

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Boppy pillow--literally sent my husband home to get it. I brought two going home outfits for me, and two for baby (two sizes).
Bring extra shoes in case you retain water.... and bring really big clothes for going home.
We also brought a pacifier because the hospital didn't believe in them.

I think I brought other stuff, but I didn't use anything else.

reading over the other ones--I think we probably brought phone chargers?
Also, I brought a legit ink on paper list of all the people we wanted to call with all their phone numbers and alternate numbers.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: my hospital had my breast friend so I left mine at home. They gave a little instruction. But I got a feel for how to hold her quickly on my own.

Following. I need to pack my hospital bag ASAP.

I agree phone charger and Chapstick is essential. Last time we also brought our regular camera so we didn't only have iPhone pics. Diapers wipes Vaseline, a few sleepers, and A&A blankets is what I'll bring for baby. Plus warm blanket and hat for car.

For me, I assume I'll need change of clothes, hair ties, make up, toiletries, I like the flip flops/slippers idea, nursing tops, I might bring my nursing pillow and snoogle pillow. I need to buy a birthing ball. Snacks. Pads. Pillow and blanket and change of clothes for DH.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: As for a nursing pillow, I used a regular pillow up until 4 months. Worked just fine. I recently found a cheap used Boppy at OUAC that I wanted to be able to use for photos and I now use that when nursing at home. It is slightly more convenient than a regular pillow and is cute, but not essential (for me). Also depends on what hold you're using. I still find a regular pillow more comfortable for a football hold.

We way over-packed, but here's what we actually used:

For me:
-Insurance card and ID!!!
-Large heating pad (this was very helpful during labor)
-Popsicles (just 2-3, not the dozen we brought)
-Something to play music (we used my husband's phone)
-Drinks and straws (I drank Gatorade during early labor, water during later labor and champagne after birth!)
-Snacks (I only ate some pretzels with peanut butter during labor but had other snacks after labor)
-My own pillow and non-white pillowcase
-Something to wear after birth (I put snaps in the straps of a maternity dress I never cared for)
-Toiletries (chap-stick, shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush , hair product, hair ties/clips, prenatal vitamins, deodorant, contacts)
-Bathrobe
-Phone and charger and long cord
-Breast pump (so that I could have the lactation consultants show me how to use it and make sure I was using the right size flanges)
-Outfit to wear home

For husband:
-Swimsuit (He got in the tub with me during labor)
-Snacks
-Fresh clothes
-Toiletries
-Phone and charger

For baby:
-Going home outfit. That's it.

ETA: A camera! Our doula took birth photos, but we used our own camera after she went home.

I barely used a single thing I brought with me, either time- the hospital provided EVERYTHING, even things like a birthing ball, socks, and a small 24 hour snack room when the kitchen wasn't open, with all kinds of things, including organic microwave meals. I did use my own swaddle blankets because they were cuter than the hospital ones and I wanted photos, I used a going home outfit for baby, some toiletries for myself, and a going home outfit for me. I also wore a regular nursing shirt while sitting in the hospital bed for visitors, so I could feel more "me." I brought a nursing bra I wore home. I also brought some magazines and had books on my phone- both weren't used much. That's pretty much all I needed that they didn't provide!

What I used:

Comfy tank and nursing bra
Socks and underwear
Black yoga pants
Comfy sweatshirt
Toiletries
Towel
Phone charger
Camera
A couple outfits for baby
Warm, cute hat (she was born in august, but the hospital room was cold)
Water bottle
Going home clothes
Chocolate (I brought tons of snacks, that's all I ended up using)

We live close to the hospital, so my husband just went home to shower and change.

What I'll bring next time:
Nursing pillow
Soft, washable blanket for baby, to bring out after the yuckiness is cleaned up

For those that brought their breastfeeding pillow, did the LC teach you the best way to place it? I'm kind of on the fence about buying it now or later if I really need it. I'm pretty sure my mom just used a regular pillow if she needed to prop one of her babies up. The kind I'm looking at is Dr. Gia's.

The only things I used - chapstick, hair ties, phone charger, boppy, and snacks.

The only items from above that I actually packed were the chapstick and hair ties. The snacks were brought by a friend, I didn't even think about packing any! And I sent DH home the next morning to grab the boppy and phone charger.

I had clothes packed as well, but I didn't even change into them until right before we went home.

Pillow for DH
Boppy for me (don't *need* it, but it helped)
Yoga pants
Comfy nursing sleeping bra(s)
Shirts
Cardigan
Phone charger
1 outfit for baby to come home in
Bathroom essentials (makeup, toothbrush, toothpaste, hairties, etc.)

I really didn't need/use more than that because the hospital provided all of the food for me and the diapers/wipes/swaddle blankets/shirts for the baby.

Its great re-reading these as I stare down prepping our "bags" this weekend!

As an aside...I put all bags together as early as possible (starting this weekend at 34w - babies can be done but mine is stuff I still use) and put all bags - in what ever state of readiness - in the crib. This way if I have to urgently go to the hospital anyone can be given easy instructions..."go to the house and bring us everything out of the crib"....

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: good idea, although be careful bringing anything that's super sentimental since birth is so messy and you might get stains on it. Also bring a blanket for your husband if he plans to stay with you - I forgot about mine with my second and he froze in the hospital, poor guy.

I thought of something else! I would bring a swaddleme or other swaddle thing to the hospital - I could never get the hospital blanket tight enough.

notepad and pen so I could take notes (when we checked in, when I got the epidural, when i started to push, etc.)
Extra long phone-cord as pp's suggested
Nursing pillow
Robe and warm socks
Baby book for footprints
Tablet or dvd's... we checked out in a day but had we stayed longer some movies would've been nice!

My hospital had birthing balls. I'd check that they don't have them before dragging yours there. Your hands will be full enough.

I used:
Wore the clothes I arrived in to go home: maternity yoga pants, nursing tank, wrap sweater

I overpacked but it made me feel ready so I'd still overpack next time, haha!

Def clothes post birth. Wearing the gown was totally fine laboring/delivering, but my own clothes made me feel human again!

And some make-up, dry shampoo, brush, etc so I look human in pictures.

Slippers! Nurses encouraged me to take a break and walk around.

People told me the baby would just be swaddled at the hospital so I only needed to bring a going home outfit, but I did not find that to be the case. The nurses were all asking me, "Do you have clothes for her?" I had my mom run to Target to get a bunch of newborn clothes because I had a c-section so we were there 4 days! So next time I'll bring plenty of baby clothes and hats.

I was glad to have a cotton robe to change into when I was done wearing a hospital gown. Covered me up but still gave the nurses and docs easy access to check everything out during their million checks.

I would not bring a blanket. There were a few times I leaked from gushes of blood. So happy we could leave that laundry there!

DH did pack an extra pillow (with a bright pillow case)

A book was my most appreciated item! There is a lot of down time, and feeding sessions take ages, so I was very happy to have a book with me to read whilst resting/feeding.

And then the obvious - toiletries, comfy clothes, nursing bras for you. For the baby, just some sleepers, swaddling blankets, and any essentials (we had to bring our own nappies, wipes etc). I wouldn't bother with anything like a boppy or big things like that...

Phone cords
Shampoo/conditioner/lotion/face wash/moisturizer/hair cream
Change of clothes to go home in
Chapstick
Comb/Brush
Baby's first outfit

I packed a bunch of other stuff but did not use it at all. My husband went home to shower and check on our animals/take something with baby's smell on it home.

Honestly, I didn't use that much. Toiletries, chargers, a going home outfit for baby, yoga pants and some nursing tank tops for me. The hospital (at least mine) provides so much stuff!

For me, the essentials were:
chapstick
flip flops (for shower, walking around in)
toiletries
my own pillow
boppy
eye mask
nursing tanks and loose pants - like another poster, i wore these during the day but changed into a gown to sleep in. You're a giant sweatball/gross in the evenings postpartum.
phone charger
going home outfits for you + baby
