@aunt pol: I'm sure they could have rustled me up a gown if I'd wanted, but it seems more of a cultural difference than due to cuts (if that makes sense). I guess you aren't "ill" so you don't need a gown... anyway. I'm pleased to say that I was prepared for lots of grossness and ick and have been surprised how little of it there is. So in my case nothing got ruined or anything. I was so glad to be home- one night on post-natal ward was more than enough for me!

The hospital gown was really uncomfortable, so while I was in bed, I wore a tank style nightie hiked up around my waist.

I didn't spend a lot in case it got wrecked, but it didn't.

Hospital gowns for sure. It had snaps on the shoulder part for easy breastfeeding and I didn't have to worry about getting it dirty b/c I can change into a clean one whenever I wanted to. Maybe bring comfortable slippers that you don't care for to wear while you're there.

@MegWag: yeah I wouldn't be hugely surprised if they're not overly generous with the gowns etc here either, feckin cutbacks! You did really well to get home so soon after delivery! @tequiero21: Get on with it woman, you could go in any day now! Obv hoping your babas stay where they are as long as possible, but a quick poll of my local multiples group showed a v high number of 36 week births!

Thanks everyone, I think I'll just buy as cheap as possible- Tshirt type nighties for delivery, pj bottoms for after, nursing tanks for on top- at least they ought to survive the ick factor!

@aunt pol: i'm 35 weeks monday and i still haven't finished packing my hospital bag - only things i have in there are my toiletries, a book (i doubt i'll read), mints/gum, undies/socks, and slippers. i need to get moving!

i was going to wear nursing top and sweats, but i think everyone's right - i'm going to feel icky (i'm scheduled for c-section) and i don't want to ruin my clothing and need to give them easy access to things - i'll just use their gowns.

Having just been through this I'll offer my 2 cents/pence :)
They actually don't give you anything to wear here, so it's all up to you.
In the antenatal ward I was wearing just comfy maternity clothes. Once I was in my labour room, I had on a longish maternity t and nothing else.
After I was done birthing and had a shower, I put on sweatpants and a nursing tank to wear in the post natal ward. PJs seemed to be what most women were wearing. No one looked at lady town after the post birth check (I didn't tear, just one small graze) so access wasn't an issue.
good luck!

I had this great stretchy gown. It had soft elastic on the front neck so I just pulled it down to nurse. It was awesome. And black so you couldn't see any gross stuff just in case.

I wear a cami (either a nursing one or one I can pull down under my boob) at night and then shorts or pj pants or other bottoms. I have tried the longer tshirt/gowns but they are HORRIBLE for nursing.

In the hospital I wore the gowns but next time I think I might look for something a bit different. It also was nice because they were checking me "down there" all the time so I just had to pull up the gown instead of get out of bed and pull down my pants.

Mostly the hospital gown. You could maybe get a lightweight robe if you wanted a little more comfort but don't want to risk ruining cute PJs.

For what it's worth, I bought a lot of nursing-friendly PJs before baby and barely wear them. It's just easier to yank the shirt then fuss with buttons, especially at night.

I mainly wore the hospital gown,, and when we had visitors, I changed for a little while into yoga pants and a tank top. I'd think a nightie would be a pain for breastfeeding.

I wore the hospital johnnies until after I took a shower the next day-- then I wore a cute nightgown/robe set I had brought. By then I had my bleeding under control with big pads and disposable underwear so I didn't worry too much about the ick factor. I slept in that the next night, then changed back into my sweats to go home in.

I also wore the hospital gowns because it was more convenient, and I didn't have to worry about getting it stained. Nurses may need to check your back if you have an epidural and/or stomach if you have a c-section a few times a day. Make sure that your clothes can provide them with easy access.

I was just wondering what everyone did sleep in/ intends to sleep in, in hospital? At home I sleep in a light tank and my knickers- sorry I don't know what you guys call underpants, haha! I know I'll be in a ward for the duration of my time in hospital, before delivery if needed, and after. I don't have €1100 for a single room! Anyhoo, I'm stuck on the nightwear. I hate long nighties, so I suppose knee length ones might not kill me. I had thought of using tanks with light pj bottoms- pj tops are out, specially long sleeved ones, I think I'd go insane. But now I'm wondering if pj bottoms are just totally impractical, given the area of my body of most interest during this time! I'm statistically quite likely to have a C section too - more common for twins and multiples- so I will have more nights in hospital, and probably more checks by nurses/midwives/doctors/ random people. Also, I intend to breastfeed, so I would need my boobs to be easily accessed, but definitely easily covered, in a ward situation. So I had thought of nursing tanks with more-or-less coordinating ok bottoms, but the doc access issue stops me.
I never thought so much about sleep clothes! Any ideas/advice for me?
