@Sams Mom: This is an interesting article written by a mom of 3, and in it she links to some articles about why the nurseries are disappearing nation-wide. https://www.babble.com/parenting/hospital-nurseries-disappearing/

My son was in the NICU so he was out of our room during our entire stay which sucked. We're hoping for my daughter (due next month) that she'll be in with us. That being said, right after birth(vaginal or c-section) I don't think it's an awful idea to give a new mom an option to get a few hours uninterrupted sleep-especially when she can't get out of bed yet! I don't think my hospital has a nursery anymore-I'll ask my doctor.

Ours has a level 2 nicu that I think we could’ve used as a nursery. It was kind of confusing because I was definitely told no nursery before giving birth but then when I had LO1 they mentioned the nursery. As in, when I found out my induction failed and needed a c-section they told me in order to have skin to skin immediately after delivery the nurse from the nursery would need to be there, and she’d eventually take DS for a little bit.

I never wanted my babies out of my sight so we didn’t voluntarily use the nursery. When DD was born she did have some trouble breathing immediately after birth, so the nurses took her away somewhere (I think the nursery?) and it took a while for her to come to my room afterwards.

The hospital I delivered at encouraged rooming in but they would also ask if you wanted a nurse to take the baby for a couple hours so you could sleep. I didn’t send either of my sons but it was nice knowing it was an option.

My sister has been a baby nurse for many years (both before and after baby-friendly designation). It looks like the policy doesn’t technically prohibit nurseries, but it does require documentation of reasons babies are taken there, and a majority of those should be medical reasons. Hospitals are already so burdened with documenting, they’d rather pretend there’s no nursery to make it easier to keep the designation. She says most are still happy to take your baby to the procedure room (yep, just a different name for the same room). In fact, she spends most of her time there caring for babies—sometimes sick ones but well ones too.

No nursery. No breaks! Baby cannot leave the the room. In Ontario, Canada here.

I also gave birth at a baby friendly hospital, so ours did not have a nursery. DS cried nonstop the second night (because he wasn't getting enough milk, which we didn't know at the time) and we had to beg the nurses to take him for two hours so we could get a little sleep.

My first was born at a “baby friendly” hospital where the babies roomed in with you. I really had to advocate for help at that hospital.

My second was born at a regular hospital with a nursery. At night they encouraged you to send your baby to the nursery in between feedings so the mamas could get some sleep. It was pretty nice especially since my LO2 was born at 4AM.

I have strong feelings against the "baby friendly" movement in hospitals since they can feel so unfriendly (and dangerous!) to women/mothers. I read over the WHO documents to become a designated baby friendly hospital and have so many issues with it. There are two major hospitals in our town--great doctors at one, but I would never use them since they're without a nursery.

There was a nursery at the hospital where I delivered my son four years ago, but basically no one used it. The hospital was certified baby friendly and we were encouraged to room in, which is what I wanted. We did not use the nursery. I think I took my son there for some sort of checkup, maybe a blood draw or to be weighed or some such. That was it.

Our hospital has a nursery. If you are BFing they will bring the baby back when it’s time for a feeding. With LO1, we used it for 2-3 hours on the second night we were there. With LO2, they took her there for about 2ish hours on the first night. They do a delayed bath so they got her cleaned up and then kept her for a few hours so we could rest. It was amazing.

The hospital I had my first two kids at there was a nursery, for tests and then they took lo1 for a few hours because she was up all night screaming on night 1 and I was in labor for 2+ days, most of that drug free. Lo2 was a typical sleepy newborn and we were shocked at how much less stressful it was to keep him in our room.

Lo3 was born at a "baby friendly" hospital. I take issue with certain aspects of "baby friendly" but we had another sleepy newborn and only stayed about 24 hours post partum so it was good.

With the not-private rooms I can only imagine the chaos with babies rooming in full time if you end up with a baby like my first was! And don't even get me started on how I feel about sharing a toilet after pushing a human out. :silly:

No nursery when my son was born 7 years ago. What's crazy to me is that in that country, there are up to three moms in a room, so if there are no nurseries and babies are rooming in, it can be chaotic.

I’m glad you asked this as I was wondering the same thing! I’m in Canada and all hospitals have rooming in with the mother. When we had DS 3.5 yrs ago he was in the special care nursery for the first night for observation as he was a preemie. They called us to come feed him there and then released him to our room the following afternoon for the rest of our stay. It was fine as we called the nurse for help and it started ya on a good routine. Now if they could move to exclusively private rooms as well, that would be amazing!

@Sams Mom: I wonder if people say “to the nursery” when it’s more like at my hospital where the nurses will take the baby to the nurses statiin Or whatever, even if there isn’t an official nursery. My oldest is almost 5.

I also do think they might be more common in hospitals that have mostly shared rooms, like in NYC, but I’m just guessing. Most hospitals in the Boston area have almost exclusively single rooms.

My hospital still had a nursery and I sent E both nights we were in the hospital. The nurses would bring her when she needed to eat and take her back when I was done. From people I know who have had babies this is almost unheard of now a days. For a hospital to get the coveted baby friendly seal they can't have a nursery.

Mine had a nursery, but room sharing was encouraged. The nurses offered to take the baby if needed. Every sound my LO made kept me awake and I sent LO to the nursery to get some undisturbed sleep. I think the nurses brought him back after 2 hours because he was not having it being away from me. The nursing staff all commented LO had a strong preference even being held by DH or me.

There’s not nursery, exactly, but for both kids the nurses were happy to take the baby for a few hours overnight so i could sleep. They definitely offered, especially after dd2 when DH didn’t stay over. I think hospitals are getting away from it because rooming in is supposed to promote bonding and encourage breastfeeding, and it’s part of the Baby Friendly certification. But I also think it’s a cost savings thing.

No nursery when my daughter was born almost 3 years ago. We really could have used one too! We were there 3 nights before she was born and were completely exhausted by the time she arrived. I had complications, was drugged up, and recovering from an unexpected c-section. Then we had to deal with a newborn who was starving, couldn't seem to get full, and didn't know how to sleep at night. Plus, right when we would get her to sleep, a nurse would come in to "check" on something and wake her up! Needless to say, the hospital experience after she was born wasn't our favorite time...

This is stemming from another post.

How many of your hospitals have a nursery still?

How many of you used it?

Neither hospital in my town has a nursery anymore (for around 4 years now). There is a small nursery your baby goes to if it needs extra care for jaundice or body temp or blood sugar or anything else minor not requiring the NICU; but there just isn't a nursery to send your baby to to get a break. The nurses will come check every couple hours overnight, they're in and out during the day, and they can watch your baby at the nurses station or maybe the nursery if no one is there to watch it while you shower. I'm just surprised because my hospital made it sound like everyone was getting away from nurseries as an added protection to avoid mixups, and for security reasons in general.
