We just did a hospital tour and kids were allowed. Although one kid was throwing a tantrum and was screaming so loud we had a hard time hearing the instructor. After 10 mins or so the mom finally left the room with the kid but it was really annoying and disruptive to the class.

- Parking situation
- Sleeping arrangement for DH
- Visiting rules so he can tell his family

That's really it for stuff that DH would want to know...

@blackbird: I don't think there is valet. The other hospital we delivered at had "stork" parking to allow partners to drop off women for 30 minutes. That was all full when I was in labor with LO1. The jerks that nabbed the spot in front of us had balloons. I'm still pissed about that. Nobody brings balloons to drop off a woman in labor.

Yes, do a dry run with him later if you can.

Take note of their security procedures (like showing a picture ID). Where the waiting room is. Whether the labor ward and recovery ward are in two different locations or floors (and which floors they are located). Where is the vending, ice machine, fridge/microwave, cafeteria? How many people are allowed in the labor room? How many in a C-Section? What is the policy on small children? Where is the NICU and what level is it? Do they have boarding rooms for parents of children in NICU? Do common things like jaundice require NICU stays? Are lactation consultants available at the hospital and do they offer consultations after discharge? Can you send your baby to the nursery to sleep and on what terms? (Ours would let you send the baby during the day but needed a reservation during the night!). Do they provide birthing balls? (Mine swore they did until we got there and then they said they stopped for hygiene reasons!).

Sorry for all the questions - we ended up having a 6 day stay so all these things were learned on the fly.

@T.H.O.U.: That is our plan. Poke around the hospital and see how far we can get afterwards. At the last hospital it was pretty closed off (you have to call in prior to reaching the check in desk).

@Truth Bombs: It says everywhere (emails, voicemail reminders, in the printed material) that LO can't come. I belong to a huge HMO so everything is beauracracy. Everyone I've talked to has said it is totally reasonable for DH to go on another tour but they don't have a policy for it so they have to check with someone else. Eventually they wrote a policy saying that he can't. I do plan to ask the instructor giving the tour if she will let him on another tour unofficially.

Does the hospital have valet parking for parents in labor? Ours does and all you do is pull up and walk in! Maybe make a trip to the hospital on another day and point out where to park/etc to your DH.

Would it be a huge deal if your LO came with you? I'm pretty sure there were a couple kids that came along when we did our hospital tour. I don't understand how it is "unfair" to expectant mothers for him to go on another tour. That literally makes zero sense.

When the time comes you are going to be distracted by the fact that you are, you know, in labor. I would want my husband to be familiar with the hospital and know what to do without relying on me.

I have my hospital tour tomorrow. It has been a major PITA to schedule. DH and I couldn't get childcare for LO1 so he's staying home with her. Originally the hospital said they would look into him going on another tour but they decided that was unfair to other expectant mothers and not in the interest of all members.

This is not the hospital I went to for LO1 and neither DH or I have ever been there before. My biggest concerns are that DH knows where to go, where to park, and where to take me. I wish he was taking the tour and not me.

What else does he need to know?
