Made me bonkers, and for whatever reason people interrupted the most at night and would turn the light on full blast! I should make my own sigh to take next time!

YES! But I was really sick after the birth of DS, so it was understandable. I just thought it was kind of nuts that they were desperately trying to get my blood pressure back down but were coming in every few minutes to poke me, test me, etc. and then telling me that I reeeally needed to relax and try to rest, haha.. um okay!

congrats on your lo! <3

Wow, it's interesting to hear that so many people had this problem! I definitely had the nurses coming in on a regular basis to check me or the baby, but I don't remember it being to the point where I couldn't get any sleep. Our rooms had a dim light the nurses used when coming at night. We never had other personnel bother us either (baby's pediatrician & the OB for me stopped by during the day & stayed 20 minutes max). I asked for LC's to stop by.

I was grateful for the nurses who visited. They kept the visits quick & were so helpful with anything I needed. Plus, it's kinda their job to make sure everyone is doing alright. I was more irritated with family/friends who didn't get the concept that I needed sleep not a 30 minute chit-chat!

I do remember being frustrated with the 2-hour loop: baby ate, fell asleep, I ordered food, I slept a little, I got checked, food arrived exactly the time that baby was ready to eat! But that's just how babies roll.

Yes. I had it a little worse because of my excessive bleeding. I had a nurse coming in every 45 minutes or so to push on my belly for the first 24 hours. I DESPISED hearing that knock at the door, knowing it was a nurse coming in to hurt me. Grrr. They finally left us alone our second night in the hospital and I think I fell asleep around 4am. Aaaaand..at shift change, the OB on call came in and woke me up to see how I was doing. :/ I don't even remember what I said to her, I was so tired.

Yikes that sonds like a mess. I had my section in NYC (Lenox Hill Hospital) and they were WONDERFUL there. When they would come in during the night to check stats, they tried to do it without waking me, and they really oncly checked my scar once or twice a day, during the daytime hours. My OB would check it as well, but they always poked their head in to see what we were doing before just coming in.

Our hospital did have a family nap time, if we wanted it. It was only two hours a day, but it was a glorious two hours. From two to four the nurses would not let anyone in the room, no nurses would come, no visitors, nobody. It was sleep time!

We actually told our nurse it was ok to let a friend come but to tell him he had to leave soon..... well he was a little late and she never let him in. I felt bad that he came all that way and had to come back later, but it was such an awesome rest so I didn't feel that bad.

I totally understand the reason behind the visits - I guess anything is hard to cope with when you're working on so little sleep and so much effort. They've actually been really great tonight - our nurse is running interference and we're getting 3 hour stretches of time to sleep. It could be worse. Hopefully home today , but baby's mouth is tiny and having latch problems. Will see an LC as soon as they get here this AM.

Congratulations!!

When I was in labor, the nurses kept telling me to get some sleep and that they were leaving so I could get some rest. Then, they would be back 30 minutes later. It was so annoying! Recovery was a lot better. I remember being really mad that a nurse came in at 3:00am and wanted me to get up and go to the bathroom. I had been up since 3:00am the morning before and labored until I had a csection after 9 that night. I was exhausted. Ughhh...it was so great to go home!

Congrats on the little man!

My hospital actually did have do not disturb signs, which was cool! I didn't have to use it..the night nurse always came in super quietly and only turned the bathroom light on behind the curtain, so it never disturbed us. I guess I got lucky!

I gave birth on the NHS, so I was in a ward with 5 other women. 6 women, 6 babies in a bay with nothing but curtains that could only be drawn at night. Visiting hours were from 8am-10pm, so there was always at least a couple husbands there during those hours. At night, the nurses did NOT disturb you unless it was an emergency though, which was nice.

@Mrs. Tricycle: Any chance you can get an early release? Unless there were complications you should be fine at home, and you'll certainly rest and recover better in peace.

And I agree with PP that this is what happens when you choose to give birth in a hospital, but that doesn't make it okay, or excuse it. It's perfectly reasonable to expect considerate behavior.

Totally agree with @Ash. It is a hospital, and not meaning to sound snarky, but frankly, it's not a hotel. If it's such a nuisance, talk to the staff about it and go up the chain of command as needed. talk to your nurse, the nurse manager, doctor, hospital administrator, etc. You always have the right to refuse vitals or visits from certain people, or even to leave AMA (against medical advice) if it's really a huge problem. I have had patients ask me to not come in so often so they can rest... I've also seen patients write their own signs on the door that state their privacy wishes. Communication goes both ways.

And no, it didn't drive me nuts if someone came to check up on me or tell me my baby was hungry or take their hospital picture. That's what I signed up for by choosing to give birth at a hospital.

Sooooo, I've never had a baby and I've never been a patient in the hospital but I am a nurse (even an OB nurse) and I have to say... overall, it's still a hospital. Yes, I think things can be grouped (ie, vitals done at the same time it's time to feed baby) but ultimately it's a hospital and because of the enormous amount of staff involved in everyone's care, it's hard to have it any other way. :((

I remember after the rush of having a baby had finally worn off, the crowd of well wishers had left and we were settled in for a while (she was born at midnight, this was now 3am) I finally drifted off to sleep, then boom "Prettylizy, it's time to feed her now, wake up." I wanted to punch that very well meaning nurse in the face! lol! After all the feeding and checking of everyone, we doze off again for a few minutes and then boom "It's time for Prettybaby's bath" (I sent DH for that one, I wasn't getting up!). Do we really need to give her a bath at 5:30am?

My hospital has "quiet hours" from 2-5 every afternoon in the recovery rooms where they turn all the lights down. The staff focuses on trying to be quiet and leaving patients in peace except for emergency situations and most moms and dads opt to send the baby to the nursery. It's nice to know that we'll at least have some peace each day that we're there!

Yes! I asked the nurses' station for a do not disturb sign (only exception was food services), then promptly forgot it must have been put on my door. I figured it out when I realized I had 2 consecutive hours of no interruptions. Best thing ever!

Yes! And family and other visitors on top of that! I put the breast feeding sign up to help. Awkward moment-a nurse was in the bathroom with me checking me for hemorrhoids a few hours after having the baby and the on-call pediatrician walks in to give me an update on DS. I know he's a doctor, but still awkward!
