We hosted thanksgiving this year for the first time. My parents and IL's and bil came. It was fun and I'd do it again. I don't know about Xmas though, I already host a Christmas party for my husbands company, I wouldn't want to do more than that!

We did the first Thanksgiving after we got married. At that time there was 4 couples, my mom, my dad, my step mom and 6 kids.

It was fun!

My parents are remarkably more flexible than I would have ever given them credit for. My sister is hosting for the first time this year, and everyone is pretty excited.

I wish we had a house so I could host. Maybe someday.

My mom will have issues. My in laws recently moved to our state and were kind enough to invite my whole family over. My parents declined. They are very much opposed to change, even for just one year.

We host Thanksgivings now and my mom actually suggested it. We always did them at my mom's house (DH's fam isn't big on Thanksgiving) but once it whittled down to just my parents, us, and my bro/sil (who live 10 min from us) my mom suggested we just do it at my house so it is more convenient for more people. I love it!

I don't know what will happen for Christmas once we have a LO. Part of me wants to do it at our house and have our own traditions, but we don't live near either family and I think seeing family is probably more important to me than making our own tradition here. We have some time to figure it out anyways. LO isn't due until 2014 and it will be at least 3-4 years before I start worrying about creating traditions that will be remembered.

We hosted Christmas Day twice already and it worked out well. I'm an only child, so just my parents came from my side and my husband's mom, bro and sis, sil and nephews came. Our place isn't that big but we made do.

Our family is small {my 2 siblings who have no children} and DH is an only child to a single mother. We started hosting Thanksgiving a couple of years ago and everyone - except my MIL who lives 2 hours away - comes and enjoys it. I offered because I want my children to experience the holidays in our home, and I think my mom was relieved to not have to take care of everything anymore.

This year I will still be hosting {read planning and paying} but we will all travel to my MIL's home so that she can participate it as well.

My family lives on the other side of the country and my MIL (it's just her and my husband) is not the most awesome book, so we decided early on that we wanted to host Thanksgiving. It is just such a pain to travel across the country for Thanksgiving and I love to cook. This will be our 8th year hosting. Sometimes it's small (just me, DH, MIL), something my family comes, sometimes we have friends who aren't traveling over for dinner. Before we had a baby we would host a Friday evening leftovers night (with turkey curry or white turkey chili) for anyone who was in town. My parents never really had a TG tradition, so it has not been a big deal. Sometimes they come, sometimes they don't. (They are this year - the baby is a big draw!)

Christmas has been much harder to manage. I don't like spending Christmas with my extended family (which is what my parents *always* do) - it's loud and too gifts-focused. My husband, MIL, and I have traveled to spend Christmas with my family a few times, but mostly we go to my MIL's house. It's okay, and this year we have plans to see a lot of friends while we are there, so that makes it more fun. It's hard on my family, though - I get a guilt trip every year.

Starting next year (I really hope we have a bigger house by then), we will host Christmas, too. Our daughter will be old enough to get it and I want to start some of our own Christmas traditions. As with Thanksgiving, anyone who want to come will be invited.

We are doing Thanksgiving this year, first time, in our new home.

My inlaws aren't local, but if they were, I would offer to host both sides of the family.

Thanksgiving has always been a roving holiday. We spent them with friends and family growing up and when I was at college I didn't always come home. Hosting Thanksgiving at my house was not a big deal. My mom loves to cook and will likely not spend every Thanksgiving at my house and I am okay with thatm I don't know if my MIL cares that we are hosting two years in a row.

If we didn't see my mom for Christmas she would feel some type of way since that is her favorite holiday. Once we have children she will come to us. We don't even have a tree.

We haven't yet. I do want LO and a future sibling to have "at home" holidays instead of constantly going to inlaws and my parents. I have a feeling will have some backlash in the future, but I just don't know how sustainable and healthy it'll be for our family to constantly visit them for holidays without establishing some family traditions of our own.

Did your family or inlaws have any problems when you decided to host a holiday for the first time? How many siblings are involved? Do they come to the holiday celebration at your house now? Were "traditions" a big thing for your family or is change generally ok?
