@agold: Ha! Yeah I agree! We try to get away twice to three times a year. So it depends. When Lo gets older he can join us on one and the other will be for us! There’s so much out there for all budgets so it will work out!!!!! :)

We have stayed in a little bit of everything. We like staying in Embassy suites or Hyatt house best because of the convenience. But we’ve stayed in plenty of regular hotel rooms especially at resorts. Our kids tend to be night owls and on vaca I can never get them to bed before nine so at that point I just want to pass out anyway. Sometimes we stay up and play on our phones or something. Rental houses through Airbnb or vrbo are great but we have a little trouble booking Because of stringent cancellation policies. We need everything to be cancelable because I have an elementary and daycare kid who are constantly bringing home germs. I do not feel comfortable booking a nonrefundable vacation. So lately we stick to chain hotels.

@agold: you are so smart to think ahead! I have vivid memories of being in a hotel room for 3 nights while we closed on our house where we had one room with 2 queen beds. DH and DD (age 3) both crashed in one bed and me and my 32 week pregnant belly stayed up reading books on my iPad with the lights off so I didn’t disturb them! This was not a vacation and it didn’t feel like one!

But I second the thought of an Airbnb or VRBO for actual vacation. We rent a condo at a beach for our family vacations and it is lovely and we have had success renting houses other places too. even if they are little there is so much value for adults in everyone having their own space!

We went to Asheville with out 2 year old this fall and did a suite so we weren't stuck being quiet and going to bed at 7:30. It wasn't a separate room with a door but a living space, hallway with a bathroom and then the bedroom so there was enough separation. Was a separate cost but it was well worth it to have her sleep elsewhere and have extra room!

@agold: It actually ended up being hilarious because DH and I were sitting on the floor in the dark and started texting each other funny memes the whole time about a fairly disastrous family visit we had that day and it helped us laugh off a long day!

@agold: it's not all bad! sometimes the airbnbs are nicer than the hotels and for the same price or lower. like, dh and our girls came with me to a conference in Montreal last fall at a 4 star hotel, and the 2 bedroom in a luxury apartment building we found within walking distance cost less than the discounted conference rate at the hotel. and, you get a kitchen, which is pretty convenient with kiddos. those hotel mini fridges don't cut it!

@gingerbebe: I love the La Quinta resort in the summer time. You can get amazing deals on the timeshare type condos there! We've recently done VRBOs on the golf courses with friends who have a similar aged baby. I haven't tried the Westin out there, but we are starwood people, too, so I'm sure we will do that soon. Getting a timeshare resale sounds interesting!!!

@lamariniere: Oh, I get that, too! Ugh to doubling hotel budget.

@psw27: That all sounds great and I'm laughing about you hiding on the floor away from the pack and play! The things we do to get our kids to sleep. And really, the nice big bathroom doubling as a nursery doesn't sound so bad.

@kiddosc: I'm cheap in a lot of ways, too. I'd do this, but my girl also sleeps with white noise on. That would just be so annoying to me. :silly:

@nana87: This is the route we will have to start taking. :bummed:

When we only had one and she was sleeping in the travel crib, we stayed in 1 bedrooms a couple times, but since she's gotten older and now we have 2, we def prefer to find 2 bedroom airbnbs or suites.

We're cheap and just get a regular room with two queen beds. A is still in a pack and play that we will put over by the door, or in a closet, or somewhere somewhat out of the way. We sit with the lights off, but the TV on low volume. The kids are usually up a bit later than usual, but then they sleep in (just a little bit). We don't travel very often, and usually it's for a planned event.

We always try to get a suite or a Jr. suite that has a separate sleeping area. It doesn't have to have doors, just a way to keep part of it dark and quiet. We did this in Chattanooga this past spring and it worked well for us. There was room on either side of the TV in the bedroom area for the PNP and cot and we brought our own sound machine/star lights.

We have done both regular and suites. In the regular room I just hung out on the floor hiding from DS in the pack n play until he passed out and then I got in bed. I think I just watched a movie on my ipad. I was pregnant and exhausted. He's in a regular bed now so I'm not sure how that will work next vacation.

Otherwise we try to get a bigger room. We actually did have DS sleep in a bathroom at one hotel - it was HUGE! It was more of a dressing area with a jacuzzi tub and the closets and was completely dark and right next to our bedroom so we used it like a nursery. It was great! We are going back to the same resort and hoping we can set both kids up in there this time.

@agold: Oh man, there are so many condo resorts in Palm Springs, that shouldn't be too bad honestly. The Marriott and Westin ones are great. We've stayed in a condo style one at the Westin in Napa and we'd totally take our kids. DH actually talked about buying a Starwoods timeshare resale for a while since you can find deals on the 2-bedroom lockoffs so cheap and can be rented out when not in use as 2 separate units.

We try to book a one bedroom suite/condo when we travel. We all sleep in the same bedroom, but that gives us somewhere to hang out during nap time especially but also after my daughter goes to bed. Luckily we've been able to find good deals so far.

Our kids are 3 and almost 5 and we've always booked suites. As long as there's at least a bedroom with a door or something similar, it works. The kids usually sleep in the living room area (either pull out bed or previously pack 'n play & air mattress) and then we'll hang out in the bedroom.

We’re figuring this out right now for a vacation this summer. The first week we booked an air bnb with 3 bedrooms so that’s easy. Plenty of space to hang out after the kids are asleep. The second week we wanted a hotel and we emded up finding a two bedroom suite style room with twin beds for the kids in a separate room so that should be good! There is a little terrace for us to hang out in acts they sleep. But the plan is to have them go to sleep later than normal... it’s definitely different vacationing with kids!

Now I need to figure out when to get my younger son out of his crib before we go away and there are no cribs 😬😬😬

@agold: I haven’t taken my kids to a Ritz, but Four Seasons hotels are often extremely kid friendly. They have just about any kid/baby item you can imagine available for your room, you just need to ask.

We found traveling with kids easy when they were still pack n play age - they’d sleep in a bathroom or we’d put them down in the corner of a room while we are on a balcony....or as they’ve gotten older we’d have a sitter put them to bed (in our room) in their bed or crib while we go out to dinner. We haven’t gone on a hotel based trip in awhile (we’ve done VRBO for beach trips) though, and I’m concerned, like you, that I’ve now limited my hotel options a bit (or must come to terms with a much larger hotel budget!)

@agold: yeah we were not planning on three kids so this was a shock! Only found out three weeks ago. Double the excitement, double the sleep deprivation.

These days my husband sleeps on our old queen-sized bed that is in my son's room, and my son sleeps in the king-sized bed in the master bedroom with me. Otherwise it would be impossible for me to sleep. I feel bad bc I know he would prefer not to sleep alone -- and I still get lots of cuddles -- but mama needs her sleep.

@gingerbebe: Okay, yes. We have always been Westin or better kind of people, too! I know Westins and other hotels have "residence" type sections that we will start to look into. But yea.. I'm all about being comfortable. And I want to have fun! I just know there are going to be fun family vacations and I'm just today realizing that such vacation doesn't necessarily equate to chilling at the adult pool while staying at the Ritz! (Although the Ritz in Palm Springs has great patios off the rooms with fire pits (!!!) and seems to be kid friendly so there may be hope!)

@ElbieKay: OMG. Should we start a thread about snoring husbands? That's hilarious. I sleep so great and sound on the nights my husband is away for work, and then he comes home and I have shit sleep! And I love him so much and being next to him. But the snoring.... So my girl can be flexible with her bed time, but I honestly really like to enjoy her during the day and then get her to bed at night so I can have my own time, even if just for an hour. Anyhow.. yes, I sort of feel like I'm never going on a vacation again since baby girl #2 is coming soon and we may try for a third. Congratulations on your twins!! Surely we could rent an RV or something to tote all the kids around in. :silly: (that actually honestly sounds like a dream to me.)

We keep our son up late, and we go to bed relatively early. And we cosleep a lot. He has always been pretty flexible with his schedule and can roll with staying up late (within reason, most of the time). So we usually get one room with a King and bedshare. This has been our solution since we ditched the pack n play. When he was 6mo we rented a vacation house so he could have his own room and we could hang out after bedtime.

My husband snores a lot so I rarely sleep with him at home. That is a bigger challenge in a hotel room than my almost 4yo!

I just found I am pregnant with twins. So I don't think we are ever going on vacation again :-P If we do we will probably mostly do airbnb type arrangements going forward.

@agold: We always stayed at Westins or better before kids but after DS1 was born, DH was like EMBASSY SUITES 4 LYFE! Throwing the kid into the room to sleep while staying up in the living room, a heated indoor pool, enclosed floors so DS1 could run laps around the hotel, a manager’s reception with free snacks and booze, plus a hot free breakfast for $150-180 a night? Sign this man up. He LOVES ES. He’s sad they don’t have 2 bedrooms!

Honestly, I think it’s worth staying at a cheaper hotel with those amenities with kids than cramming into a fancy hotel room. Being on holiday is about being comfortable. Not worth the money to stay someplace chic with no rest.

That said we aren’t doing a fancy resort until everyone is 3 and can be dropped off at a kids club or something!

@erinbaderin: Peeing in an ice bucket! That's classic. Great memories, I'm sure.

@cake2017: "Some" trips is they key to my "problem", I think. There will be trips with the kids, and then these trips I want to take to the fancy hotels where I can't afford a suite will just have to be adult trips! But I honestly don't even take many trips so I'm going to have to figure out the budget for all of this! :silly:

@lamariniere: I'm thinking when kids get a *little* older, its a *little* easier. But who knows!

@DesertDreams88: I was thinking about all of this! Already was going to get the bigger room. And I know there is a nice bathroom. So maybe I will talk to my husband about this idea.

@looch: Yes, I don't have the budget for a suite either! Especially at the type of hotels I like to go to. Which is why I was slightly sad this morning, thinking I'd never be going to a nice hotel again. I love the baby sleeping with you. So sweet. I'm sure I will be doing that one day. Just maybe not this weekend like I had hoped.

@raspberries: I was thinking about headphones and a movie. But we are really more staying up playing cards kind of people. Maybe if I could have a glass of wine while watching the movie, I'd be content. I really need to readjust my vacation expectations with kids involved!! :silly:

For weekend getaways, we've always just gotten a regular room - two queens, DS1 in the other bed and DS2 in the pack n play. Both of our little ones bedtimes shift a little bit later when we're on vacation so by a couple days later, they're usually going to bed by 8:30 or 9 and sleeping in as well. DH and I usually watch a movie together with headphones and a splitter after they're in bed.

That being said, if we're going somewhere for a week or more, we usually use Airbnb or rent a house.

Gosh, I don't always have the budget for a suite and my son is content to sleep with us in a king bed, so we typically do that. We keep early hours, though.

We usually get a more deluxe-size room so there's more space away from the bed, and we push the time back for the baby and push bedtime up for us.
We also have put him in the bathroom, if it was a nice bathroom with good size.

Our oldest is 7, and over the years we have stayed in many different types of accommodations when traveling. Usually, we have a budget and we try to get the biggest room within our budget. Sometimes this means a suite or larger room, but most often, it's a normal sized room with two queen beds. We've also done a number of airbnb type of accommodations. When it's a "normal" room with two queen beds, we just put the LOs to bed in the same bed and then hang out with the lights low, but not off. Luckily, our LOs sleep pretty well in hotels and we've never really had any issues. I'm not looking forward to when the kids are over 12 and are counted as adults in the number of people allowed per room. We'll probably have to get two rooms at that point.

@Anagram: during our most recent trip earlier this month, we also had the grandparents along. We had two separate rooms and one LO slept on the couch in our room and the other slept on the couch in the grandparent's room. We did a few afternoon outings during nap time and the grandparents watched our LOs while we were out.

We just started to always get airbnbs. Our daughter has an early bedtime so we could never just share the room with her at night.

I do want to go to a resort next winter for part of our annual vaca so we will prob have to suck it up and pay for a suite of some sort. We’ll prob do that for 2-3 nights and Airbnb the other 2-3 to cut costs.
