@mrsH that depends on what you and your nanny agree on. Some nannies are willing to do more chores than others. When I agreed to work for my bosses the mom only asked me to wash/ fold the cloth diapers. I was fine with that. However, most of the time I do the dishes, do laundry, tidy up, cook dinner occasionally, etc.

Have you asked her what her rate is?

IMO, unless you're in a major metropolitan area, the rates on HB are waaay out of range compared to the rest of the country. I'd probably pay a sitter like you're describing between $8-10/hr under the table (equivalent to like 10-15 above the table) in Central PA. Maybe more if she had a long drive to your house.

I don't pay my sitter hourly. She is a college student who watches my 4 month old for the summer between 8-6 (sometimes less depending on if DH is working from home or not). I basically told her what our budget was ($250/week) and she accepted it. It's all under the table. She works 4 days/week for us. She's a bargain! I will pay $160/week for 4 days of home daycare once DD starts in the fall.

When she sits for us on weekends, we pay her $10/hour.

FWIW, I live on the East Coast.

@MrsH: I'm in the Midwest, we pay our in home daycare 115/week which I know is on the low end, but that would be $23/day.

Edit: hourly I would do 8 for a HS student, and 9-10 for a college aged.

I was a part time baby sitter for my nieces, 18 months/2.5 until 4/6 years old. I started at $10 an hour then moved up to $12. I did some light house work (mostly tidying up and dishes.). I live in central tx and $12 is about average here.

@MrsH: I'm Midwest as well. I usually pay $7-8 for an older teen- and would expect about $10 for someone college age/20's. A seasoned caregiver could expect $12-$15 but I think you'd be fine offering $10.

@bushelandapeck: I'm leaning towards in our home. I think the socialization aspect of daycare would be great but I also am so stressed with work that I don't want to deal with the germs/sickness that is sure to follow with a daycare center.

Since I work Tuesdays at home it would be nice for me to see LO and have her be in an environment she is happy in. Just not sure I'm willing to pay more than 60 bucks a day for the privilege.

I think $12 for someone without a lot of childcare experience is reasonable. In Seattle though it would be more like $15.

I think for me the difference in a nanny versus a babysitter is the consistency of work. A nanny you are agreeing to a set hours and they can count on that income. Versus a babysitter, they are just kinda as needed or on call and often at a premium time (Friday night/weekend) so the babysitter hourly rate may be a tad higher in some cases.

I would maybe go into the conversation saying that a daycare center would be $128 for the two days and you are willing to pay her that but it would be less hours (therefore the hourly rate would be technically a bit higher). See what she says and then also talk about maybe a bonus/raise if it works well or turns into a long term solution, or for paying for her to do activities later on maybe.

@MrsH: absolutely. There are definite dis/advantages to going either route. We actually had planned to do an in home daycare with my son but I got laid off while on maternity leave. When I did go back to work, the daycare's weren't flexible with my hours (6a-6p) or part-time status, but it sounds like the one you are looking at would be. That's a tough decision! Are you leaning towards one more than the other?

@bushelandapeck: right I realize the daycare rate comes with disadvantages of 4 children for every teacher, LO having to be packed up each morning/not in home. On the other hand, the daycare doesn't take sick time, is open 6-6, does parents nights out, etc.

@MrsH: When you do the math on the daycare rate you mentioned for 24 hours/week of care (6am-6pm) it comes to a little more than $5/hr which is extremely low. I would think $10-12/hr would be the minimum to pay a nanny/babysitter if there are expectations about cleaning up, structured activities, etc. We pay our nanny $15/hr under the table (her choice) and expect her to make meals, take LO to activities, clean up after him, and occasionally put away his laundry. We always pay her a set amount each week, even if we use her less.

@MrsH: Before our first child got into daycare, we used someone at a similar stage in their life as the caregiver you described and paid them $13 an hour under the table. The arrangement lasted a few months.

We now have a regular nanny who has a lot of childcare experience and a lot more responsibilities with our kids and our household. We pay her $20 an hour under the table with paid time off (she can pick 1 week and we typically take 3 weeks ourselves).

I'd say at least $10 but preferably closer to $12. Food is always offered and families pay for any outings with the child(ren).

@mrsbird- If a family is paying their nanny on the books then it is illegal to do a salary. I have no idea until we signed up with breedlove.

@mrs. jump rope- Some nannies get SO offended when you call them a babysitter. I find it hilarious that they get so worked up over it. I'm pretty easy going and it doesn't bother me one bit.

E will have two solid naps while she is there - she can watch tv or read or whatever she likes. I don't want her to just turn on tv and let E watch it all day she is only 5 months old. I'm not against tv but I want her to have tummy time, go in walks, etc.

@MrsH: then I am still confused.

I paid S $8/hr to watch my kid for 4 hours at a time, while I worked for home. We paid her the same rate if we did a date night, which wasn't very often. At 6 months, Chloe was napping at least once while she was here. I was completely fine with S hanging out and watching tv. I still paid her full rate.

I didn't want her to do dishes, vacuum, or anything other than play with my kid. They took walks or played out back.

Really, keep my kid happy and alive.

I admit, I didn't hear the term nanny until HB. Well, outside of the tv show. And then I think I used it incorrectly. I referred to our caregiver as a nanny but I think she fits the definition of babysitter better?
