@jh524: I've looked at most of those but don't think it's anything. Room is dark, humidifier rubbing, white noise, "right" temp, etc. we've had days of great naps and crap nights and crap naps and crap nights. Haaahha, who knows?!

@Meltini: thanks so much, I'm hoping it ends soon...I think we're in week 3 right now so I figure in the next few weeks I'll know for sure if it was just a phase, or if well be sleep training to end it!

@MsLipGloss: We did get a prescription for Zantac a few weeks back...not sure if it was a "reverse-placebo," but she seemed crabbier while she got it. I haven't ever really noticed too many signs of silent reflux, but I also know Zantac doesn't work for everyone... She doesn't nurse all night either, she just....doesn't unlatch. Haaahh a, faaaaail!

@ms.janedoe: Has your LO been evaluated for (silent) reflux? It (reflux) is generally at it's worst from 4-6 months. (And I would recommend taking your LO to a Ped GI Specialist too, not just your regular Ped.) Especially when you describe her being latched most of the night . . . the frequent nursing helps to coat her throat/esophagus when the reflux is kicking in.

My LO had the same sleep issues (only she never slept great in the beginning), and I dealt with almost hourly wakeups for 9 months. No exaggeration. 9 months. And I worked full time (and in a profession where I can commit malpractice if I screw up). I have no idea how we managed. But we did. I wish I had pushed harder for a specialist eval sooner.

The only thing I can tell you is that it is a phase and it will pass. We were in it for a few weeks (3 I think) and it stopped just as quickly as it started. Hang in there and buy lots of coffee!

@ms.janedoe: ugh! Sorry, I hope it gets better! I'm not quite sure what I could suggest. Is there something that could be waking her in the night? Temperature of her room, noises, wet diapers, etc. that age seems too young to be teething! I guess I would try to rule out if something is waking her then move on to trying to get her awake and busy during the day. How many naps is she taking?

What's her schedule?

@ms.janedoe: Oh lady I feel you! We coslept some to survive too, and like you I didn't enjoy it. She still woke up a lot so I had to move her around every hour to get her a "fresh" boob, and I felt like I barely slept with her next to me.

I still have moments where I question if my LO was too little, so I completely understand where you are coming from. And while we were already in the crib, I was also just as nervous about swaddle weaning. LO hit herself & scratched her face at first too but in just a few days she was doing fine. I would rock her until she was dead asleep & transfer her super carefully so she wouldn't hit herself, and I also strategically laid an A&A blanket over her hands to sort of muffle them when she did startle.

All I can really say is that I'm really glad we sleep trained, but no matter what you do I completely understand what you are going through & how hard it is!

@shellio: Ugh, hope it goes quick for you!
@yin: I like the one night at a fine approach, good luck!!

@daniellemybelle: I've totally followed your whole journey as I feel like it's so similar to where we are. We've still pretty much been at hourly (occasionally 2 hour) wake ups for about 3 weeks straight now. We went 3.5 hours two nights ago and I was thrilled! ;)

I nurse her to sleep and put her down, which always goes fibs, but from there on out she's up every sleep cycle (it seems). I can occasionally pop the pacifier (over and over), but she hadn't really taken to it, so I started rocking her. Now, I've started bringing her into bed with me as it's been the only way to get some form of sleep! My DH travels so the majority if the time I solo-parent...which has put me in survival mode!

I'm definitely not against CIO, but I feel like I have so much to do before then--she's still swaddled (I tried a arm out for a nap and she smacked herself over and over), still in the RnP in our room, and now, sleeping with me for part/all of the night... :/

Im hanging in there but just feel list, like I'm not sure what to do. She's just 17 weeks on Wednesday and I'm still leaning towards her being a little too little...but at the sane time I'm not naming much headway doing anything to help the transition. I've tried doing a crib nap each day, which usually lasts 10 minutes, then she's crabby and overtired, the swaddle was a fail so far...sigh. I don't know. I don't love sleeping with her, I'm still up a lot, just a me to fall asleep quicker after, and she spends the majority if the fine latched on, which is another bad habit.

I don't know, I'm just...tired!

Sleep regressions are fun. We're going through it right now, and I thought DS1 was purposely trying to kill me the first time around. With DS2 I'm trying not to stress out over it and take it one night at a time. I tried the magic sleep suit out of desperation two months ago, but it didn't work on my LO. He prefers to self soothe and wears a sleep sack.

That is exactly when we went from STTN to basically refusing to sleep anywhere but latched onto my boob. I know everyone says the 4 month regression passes but I white knuckled through it for over a month before sleep training at 18 weeks & I am extremely glad we did.

In our situation, LO was very devoted to her sleep props. It had been nursing but I started just rocking if it wasn't a feeding time & while she protested at first, she started going back to sleep just fine as long as I rocked her... but I would put her down dead asleep & start over 20 minutes later. I knew if we could teach her to fall back asleep without rocking we would be in much better shape.

We swaddle weaned & introduced a lovey before we Ferberized. It was painful but it worked insanely fast - like the first night. A huge bonus is naps are improved because she can put herself back to sleep after the 40 min mark when before she could not transition sleep cycles on her own.

I am of the belief that helping your child to get better sleep is the loving thing to do even if involves crying. Unfortunately since I had not heeded the advice everyone gives you to put your baby down drowsy & awake, she just was unable to go back to sleep without help, and so she was crying for me 10+ a night. Now she has 2-3 wake-ups and gets up in the morning happy & rested!

We seem to be hitting this time too :( And I totally second the Merlin sleep suit - I was hesitant to spend $40 on it but DS was busting out of the swaddle so frequently that it wasn't really helping anything. The suit has helped so much. I hope none of our babies spend very long in this regression, ugh.

@ms.janedoe: I'm right there with you. The last three nights have been miserable. Add on that I've had a sore throat and congestion so I can't sleep anyway, I'm exhausted. Last night, LO woke up every time I put her down after 1 am, I ended up sleeping in the glider.

Here's to hoping the 4 month regression is only a few weeks.

@ms.janedoe: I would try swaddling with one arm out or buying the sleep suit. I think Ollie was waking himself up after he wiggled out of the swaddle. During that time, he would only nap for 20-30 minutes. Once I switch to the sleep suit, naps are now 1-2 hours.

Thanks so much, everyone! I had suspected the end of the 3 month growth spurt, Wonder Week mega-leap, 4 month sleep regression, and teething (bottom two look like and feel like they're on their way in! I didn't think it could be the 4 month regression as most posts I found were complaining about how short their LO's 3-4 hour stretch was... :/

Add to that my mom constantly telling me she's "too fussy and should be sleeping" and the doctor telling me it's probably reflux (I don't think it is), and I've been going nuts!

I guess we'll just keep on truckin' through...here's hoping the end is in sight...soon!!!

Exactly what MJane (and i'm sure what the other mommies all have said). That is the 4 month sleep regression. I remember it happening to us around the same time and I was about to lose my mind. We just had to get through it, I'm sorry to say. It is temporary and she will go back to a better schedule.

I think from 3.5 months to about 4.5 months was pretty rocky. Each night was different but the sleep seemed like it was worse than when my LO was younger! Around 4.5+ was when I saw the light and at 5 months, nightly sleep stretches were getting longer and longer with one night of not waking at all!! That was when things really started to look ok.

We are at 7 mo now and teething, so that means 1 night waking (maybe 2) but for the most part, naps and nighttime have normalized.

My advice: stay calm and tell yourself "this too shall pass." It will, mommy. Sorry you are going through it right now...its so hard. Hang in there!

Hate to say it, but a 16 week old never had the ability to self soothe, so she hasn't lost it - she is coming out of her "4th trimester" now so her brain is functioning MUCH differently than it was a month ago. She's waking up to the world! As others have said, that usually means the 4 month sleep regression.. you definitely could give her 10 mins without rushing in to see if she will fall back asleep, as waking every 1.5 hrs sounds like she's up between sleep cycles. Sorry, mama :(

4 month sleep regression for sure. We were in that hell for 3-4 weeks. I have no clue how I still functioned, worked, and drove. Sleep training is the only way we could get her to sleep again.

Oh my word, just remembering the 4 month stage is making me shake with horror!

It doesn't feel like it now, but things will go back to normal, I promise. We had a couple of weeks of 10-15 wake ups per night at around that time (you can look back and find my desperate posts of you are so inclined) and then at 5 months on the dot she STTN for the first ever time! After that, we were down to 1-2 wake ups per night, with a couple of STTNs thrown in per week. Now, at 7 months, she's teething hard so her sleep has gone back to poop - but I know it's only temporary!

So sorry! Sucks. Sounds like the dreaded 4 month sleep regression to me! For us we just powered through for a couple of crappy weeks and then she was back on track (but her naps didn't solidify until around 5 months... around 4 months sucks because they are becoming less sleepy but haven't learned how to nap, in my experience). We also used nursing as a last resort (i.e. my husband soothed her for most of the wakeups). So hard that your husband is traveling! Are you nursing?

FWIW, letting her fuss for 10 - 15 minutes isn't sleep training, in my book, and may be worth a shot?

Seriously, I'm losing it. LO is 16 weeks old and about 2 weeks ago, LO's sleep went to shit. She WAS giving me a 4-6 hour first stretch, a 2-4 hour second stretch, and a little 1 hour third stretch, but now were on this hellish 1-1.5 hour cycle, ALL. NIGHT. LONG.

I'm at a total loss, nothing in our routine has changed, I'm not doing anything different, I'm just...lost. During the day she's been ridiculously crabby, which I'm assuming is a result if being overtired from her awful night sleep, and it seems all I'm doing all day is getting her ready/putting her down for naps, which, also last only 45 minutes to an hour.

I'm afraid at this point she's lost all ability to self-soothe and out herself back down (which she obviously was able to do before). I'm panicking, as DH travels for work I'm left to solo-parent most if the time, and being sleep deprived is not helping anything. :( I feel like she's way too little to sleep train, but I don't know what to do in the meantime.

I want my happy baby and at least a 2 hour stretch of sleep back!!
