@MrsBrewer: at my last company, we were salaried with overtime. So, if we worked an extra hour, we got paid for it. At this company, we're strictly salary unless we get a bonus or stipend for something we did outside of our normal job.

I am salaried a I love it. No one cares if I come in 30 min late as long as it works out at the end of the week. We only work 37.5 hours and my company does not expect me to work any overtime. There are also 2 different kinds of salaried workers (at least in NC) the 1st is except which means you do not qualify for over time pay at all, the 2nd is salaried non-exempt which still gets paid for overtime.

I think it really depends on how many hours your company expects you to work vs what you get paid being salaried.

I'm on Salary, but get paid overtime hourly. So maybe that's something to consider. Because otherwise salary peeps usually don't get paid for overtime.

Salary = abuse. I hated it and am so happy that I get to move to hourly now that I am part time thanks to the baby. For 2 jobs in the past 6 years- no overtime, in jobs that I was constantly working more than 8 hours per day and taking work home with me every night. If I can avoid salary in the future, I will.

@MamaG: Yea, I totally agree, there are going to be times where I will need to stay because of the time of year/month, But I was saying more or less on a regular basis! Sorry!! I agree, we will always work on average more than 40 hrs per week!

It's not often an accountant gets to work 8-5 all year long. There are certainly busier times (month-end, year-end, audit, etc) and I would be shocked if no one in accounting worked more than 40 hours during that time at your new company.

If it's true, I might need to find a new accounting job!

@MrsBrewer: I didn't. But for my situation I knew if I asked for more they wouldn't give it to me and tell me to work less hours. Which was hard to do as a social worker, because people depended on me. And of course I ended up getting too wrapped up in it and felt awful when I couldn't do what I wanted to for people because there wasn't enough time in the day, and I felt super guilty and it stressed me out to the point where I was getting sick over it. And that's when hubby told me to quit :)

I agree that the only downside is lack of overtime... especially during tax time (I do bookkeeping). =/

I do like not having to worry about being late like @mrsbells stated & that as long as I get my work done I'm good!

Also another good thing is when I go for lunch break I can be a bit relaxed and not feel like i have to rush back. When I used to work hourly I would always stick to a 30min lunch but now I take my full 1 hour or even more and go shopping and stuff..

@artbee: Yeah I hate that, sometimes I stay an extra 30-1hr and dont get paid for that. but I cant complain because I've taken lots of hours off for doctors appointments so it works out in my favor.

The only downside about being salaried is the lack of overtime. I often work late and bring home work and don't get paid any extra for that. But like @yoursilverlining: said, the upside is that your time is not tracked too closely. I don't have to fill out a timesheet, if I go to a doctor's appointment, I never use a partial sick day or personal time because I end up making that time up on days I stay late.

I’m salary and don’t notice any real huge difference between that and hourly, except that I often work more than 40 hours a week without overtime (salary employees are not eligible for overtime, at least not anywhere I’ve ever worked as a salaried employee). But – that’s the nature of working salary I think – I think the idea is that you are better compensated, but expected to work until the job is done, even if that means staying late. The upside to that though is that my time is not tracked as closely. If I work late several days a week, but need to take a long lunch one day, or have a doctor’s appointment another day, it sort of all comes out in the wash, and I don’t need to use personal time for appointments.

AT least at my company, only salaried employees can get a bonus. Hourly employees are subject to state wage & hour laws so depending on where you live you get paid overtime if you stay late.

I've always been salaried and one big downside is if your work requires you to work long workdays, like above and beyond the typical 9-5 day. My last job, I would frequently be 'at work' until midnight or 1am since I was in marketing and we had so many events all the time. So if you divided my salary by the number of hours I worked, I only made like $10/hr. But at my current job it's not like that at all, it's truly a 9-5 workday so it works out in my favor.
