@daniellemybelle: I see. My LO goes to daycare so they have definitely been telling them not to hit for a while now since the kids are in such close proximity with each other all day. In that situation, I think you have to start whenever you see inappropriate behavior even if they may not necessarily fully understand what you are saying. They will still be able to gauge an emotion from your tone of voice that this isn't something that they can continue doing.

@Andrea: Yes, I mean posting a list, but obviously it would verbally enforced as well, so they wouldn't necessarily need to be able to read. I've seen Supernanny post a list where the kids were not reading, and sometimes they have simple illustrations like a red X over a fist to symbolize No Hitting.

Once the kids are at an age where they understand when you speak to them they should be able to start following basic rules. usually just around 2

I am not familiar with Supernanny but do you mean posting up a list of house rules? Wouldn't the kids need to be able to read them?

I am Supernanny's biggest fan! I love that she establishes House Rules from the get-go. I think it is good for kids to clearly know what is expected, why it is expected and what the consequences are if they don't obey.

I was thinking though, if you don't have a Supernanny style intervention with older kids, when do you introduce House Rules? Do you just always have them from when your children are little bitty, and they grow up with them? Or do you wait until they are old enough to understand and have a "family meeting" about them? I feel like the longer you wait, the harder they are to implement, but it seems kind of silly to post rules like "No Hitting" when your baby is 6 months old!
