Also are there any frozen meals you can eat, like Amy's or whatever? You could have a few of those on hand too?

@anandam: 2 weeks is a long time to bring all your meals ahead of time. Could you come prepared with a few recipes that will make a lot of leftovers (like, a tray of lasagna, only, obviously, something you can eat) and make that with her one night, then eat leftovers from that when she makes something you can't eat?

knowing what I do now about allergies and food intolerances and such, if I was hosting you I would appreciate recipe suggestions and you really spelling out what you can or cannot eat. I would hate to make something especially for you, only to find out that the seasoning I used was a no no and you couldn't eat it, you know?

I'm following because I'll be in a similar situation over Thanksgiving. I'm avoiding dairy and soy. I'm mostly vegan and dairy won't be a problem because most if my in-laws are vegan. But soy might be problematic.

I had a house guest with severe dietary restrictions (NO dairy or soy for her BF baby, so she had to be incredibly cautious) for a whole weekend. She brought every single meal with her, in serving-size containers. I was kind of mortified that she felt she had to do that - I would have gladly cooked appropriate meals for her! However, I now understand how difficult it can be to trust other people to make sure nothing accidentally gets used that's not diet-friendly (I learned that even 'plain' spices can have a special soy additive in them! ).

So, in short, she brought ALL her own meals and I felt bad.

Oh, and she also brought along a lot of homemade snacks to share (banana bread, trail mix, etc) so she wouldn't feel too weird always eating something different than everybody else.

I have never had a houseguest with dietary restrictions, but I did host H's party and invited people with allergies/restrictions. As the host, I asked people ahead of time what their restrictions were and made sure I provided food that they could eat (in my case, we had one severe nut allergy, one dairy allergy, and a vegetarian). You might not be able to eat out, but if your MIL isn't possessive of her kitchen it shouldn't be a problem if you wanted to cook your meals.

What have you been doing at your house with meals for DH and you? Have you been making separate meals or just cooking for the both of you? Could you continue doing what you're doing now at the inlaws house? Since your diet is so restricted, I think eating out would be tough, no? So maybe you have to opt out of eating out with them and just make food at home, as boring as that is. :/

I had a friend go through this and the above suggestions are what she told me she had to do to stay on a VERY limited diet.

We're going to stay with ILs for 2 weeks and I'm still on a strict elimination diet trying to figure out DS's MSPI+whatever it is. I'm off dairy, soy, wheat, corn, eggs and peanuts at present.

I'm not used to being a "picky eater" so am not sure the best way to deal with this. MIL is not at all possessive of her kitchen. Should I do all the shopping/cooking for everyone while we're there? Or make something separate for myself every meal? Would love to hear your experiences on what would be the least offensive/annoying!

ETA: they love to eat out. a lot. also not sure how to manage that.
