My problem with painting the upstairs green is that we already have green in two of our rooms and are going to use it as an accent in a third one. Here's what the upstairs hallway looks like in the morning light, the upstairs bathroom (green and white), the downstairs kids bedroom, and the hallways again. We're really just looking for a darker yellow suggestion for upstairs.

Excuse the mess. We don't live upstairs yet, have to get AC installed first. Which is why we're painting now instead of later.

I'm going to throw out something different: Ben Moore's Palladian Blue. It is a cooler color that sometimes looks grey, sometimes blue, and sometimes green but it plays nicely with my warm brown accent wall and neutral furniture. Here is a pic of it right now (please excuse the mess):

@Mrs. Grizzly Bear: The color @BakerBee: mentioned is my most favorite paint color in my house. It's nice and warm and actually feels slightly green in some lights, so definitely not to brown or grey, in my opinion.

@ladybee: Having used this paint before I know it's going to be a sunny yellow. Very much a Pooh yellow. Which means some rooms are going to take some tweaking, like the dining room. The red in there will have to be lightened. Less plum, more barn. But the house has been sitting mostly white for over a year. I'm ready for the change!

@Mrs. Grizzly Bear: we've got a ton of colors with it ranging from light blue to navy, avocado green to hunter green, red, brown. If we had a girl I was planning light pink and aqua. It really goes with everything. I will admit it has a slight yellow undertone and when we were painting it looked so yellow but dried tan.

@ladybee: That's exactly why I wanted a neutral but warm color - it'll look beautiful any time of the year with any decorations I might want to add. Green and red for Christmas? Stunning. I want the space to feel sun shiny without being too highlighter yellow.

Our whole house is Valspar Malted Milk. It's a light tan color that goes with all of the red and green in our house. It's warm but light. I'm boring though so it's not for everyone :)

@BakerBee: We're trying to get away from the brown. And definitely away from grey. My office is currently painted grey and we're about to paint it a sweet purple orchid color. Grey or dark or brown is not our usual MO! Which is why I'm so surprised he wanted to put it up.

What about replacing the Coconut Scent with a grayish taupe? I'm thinking something like the ever cliché Benjamin Moore's Revere Pewter

When it comes to color I'm usually the first person to point out when something doesn't seem to be working 100% for whatever reason - too much grey, too much blue, etc. Well Mr. Bear had some left over paint from the other house that he decided to use on this house. It was a taupe brown like color that actually looked okay in the strong light of the upstairs. When he painted the first wall I told him I hated it. That it made it look flesh toned (which it did with one coat) and that it reminded me of a bandaid (which it kinda still does). But with more natural sunlight and the antique furniture we had, we thought it might work. And it did!

Until we started painting the downstairs. The plan had been to paint them complimentary colors. Have a lighter golden color downstairs that's light (since there isn't a lot of natural light) and have a few shades darker/richer shade of the same color for the wall going up the stairs and the hallway. I was thinking honey, caramel, warmth, depth, that sorta thing. But then Mr. Bear goes decides what we really should do is paint the downstairs a buttery color. The same buttery color we had used in P's nursery at the other house. A very classic Pooh Bear shade of sunny welcoming yellow. Which is the opposite of depth and warmth. It's just light and sunny and sentimental of something that I loved very much.

But you can imagine how badly the two colors clash. Like 70s tile clashing. It's awful. :( Can anyone help me find a complimentary shade to paint on top of one (or both!) of these painted walls? I'll take better pictures tomorrow but here's one to start! The lighter color is from Valspar and it's called Coconut Scent. Not sure what the dark color is called.
