@alphagam84: Can I tell you that you sound exactly like me. I went off of birth control the year we started TTC in June after being on it for 10 years. My first cycle off birth control was 84 days. Second was 60, third was 54. It took me 8 months to normalize and get pregnant, then I miscarried and I finally seemed to normalize my cycles to 30 days.

But, I also want to say that I had a friend who got her period like clockwork, but never ovulated. The second she went on Clomid, she got pregnant. So it's interesting that she's saying you shouldn't be getting a period if you aren't ovulating. I don't want to speak for anyone, but I believe there are women on this site who have cycles, but they're annovulatory.

Fwiw I am 5'6" around 110 - so I am technically underweight and have had a successful pregnancy. Not saying your dr is wrong, just wanted to give you a diff perspective. Good luck to you! :)

Have you heard of hypothalamic anovulation? Apparently even if you're a healthy weight, a lot of exercise (esp endurance training like high-impact cardio) can signal to your body that it's in a stressed state, and your body can respond by not ovulating. Obviously it doesn't happen to everyone and they're not sure why it does for some women and not others...it happened to me when I trained for a marathon and I can assure you I was not underweight at all (5'1 and 115-120)! I tracked my cycles for a long time before we started to TTC so that's how I suspected something was up, and it was confirmed by my OBGYN. Once my marathon was over and I went back to my regular workouts (more weight training and no running) my cycles regulated within a few months.

I think it's awesome that you are so active and don't want to imply you should modify that in any way - just wanted to share my experience.

Maybe try increasing your fat intake for a bit, I dont know that you need to decrease your exercise. With both kids I got pregnant while biking and running strenuously most days. But you do need to get enough calories if going hard.

It really depends on the person. Some people can work out like crazy and will still ovulate/have regular cycles, but some need a little more body fat. I wouldn't necessarily cut down your workouts as they don't seem super intense, but maybe try increasing your calories, especially your fat calories. Make sure you are getting some saturated fat in your diet as that can help to regulate hormones.

@alphagam84: If you have only been on off BC since July, I would blame that! It took me almost a year to really normalize and regulate after 10 years on BC.

@2PeasinaPod: We agreed to do Clomid at this point: finish my current cycle, schedule a 21 day blood test for the next cycle to see if I ovulated. If the bloodwork shows no ovulation then we'll start me on Clomid. She said you typically ovulate though to have a period so that is a little confusing as well since all the pee strips I've used have been negative. My cycles have also been off since going off BC in July. The first two were 8-10 weeks and the last one was 5 weeks. Hopefully they will normalize now.

From what I understand, it's about body fat percentage (not being super-skinny) and its relationship to ovulation. Without the right amount of body fat, the body doesn't think it can support a pregnancy and therefore doesn't ovulate.

I was running at least 3x a week while ttc as well. I got pregnant while I was in the middle of training for a half marathon (running probably 10-20 miles per week). I ran the half at 8 weeks pregnant. I'm 5'4" 120 lbs but probably not as fit as you!

I was running at least 3x/week while trying to get pregnant. I got pregnant with my son when I was in the best shape of my life. She wouldn't want to try you on Clomid first to see if that works? I'm not a fan of doctors telling me that I need to cut back on the one thing that helps to keep me healthy and is my sanity sometimes! I'm 5'1 and 110 pounds...so I don't think that you're all that off on weight vs. height.

I did a lot of crossfit before I got pregnant and ovulated fine. But CF is different than endurance training like triathlons, so I can see how that could affect it, especially if you have a low body fat. I stopped ovulating after a MC and my dr gave me clomid

I'm hoping to hear from people who were very active prior to TTC. I compete in several triathlons each year and am currently in the off season so my workouts looks like this for a week:
Monday & Wednesdays: Strength training at the gym for 45 mins
Tuesday: Swim 1500-2100 yards
Thursday: Run 3-4 miles
Saturday: Long run of 6-7 miles (building up each week towards a half marathon in April)
Sundays: Yoga

After 6 months of not getting pregnant and a month of using ovulation test strips which never showed a positive ovulation, I went to see the doctor. She ran tests and said everything looks great and sees no issues. They saw follicles (or eggs not sure which term to use) on the ovaries and that they were forming. It appears I just may not be ovulating. She suggested a possible cause is a lot of exercise and cutting back on my runs, easing up on the exercise, and maybe gaining some weight. I'm 5'5 and 120 lbs so I don't think I'm super skinny or anything. I love working out and I'm not sure about this plan as it just seems like a possibility for me not ovulating. If it was a guaranteed thing of me ovulating if I cut back I absolutely would but I'm not sure if I want to do it if it's just a possibility. There's a huge triathlon (a 70.3 mile) I want to do in June so I will need to start officially training in about 3 weeks. I plan to compete in the race if I'm newly pregnant but would buy the insurance in case I wasn't feeling up to it so I could back out if needed.

Did anyone have success ovulating/getting pregnant while working out a lot? If you were active and not ovulating, if you cut back on the exercise, did you then start ovulating?
