Most of my friends who are asking me this question know that I've been struggling with hyperemesis, so I'm honest and tell them I'm doing okay. Though, the meds are finally working for me so I'm changing my response to good.

This question drives me nuts. I never know what to say, though I go with "good" usually, since I've not had any really negative symptoms. But I get it SO often. And my mom really annoys me, because she asks it both as how am I doing physically, and how am I feeling emotionally. She knows I hate talking about feelings, but thinks I should do it more, so she tries to push it.

Though thinking about it, I vastly prefer people asking how I'm doing over "how's the baby." How the hell should I know? She's moving, so I'm guessing she's good.

I was really sick during almost all of my pregnancy, and talking about it got old fast. Instead, I usually answered "Excited to meet the baby!" It was still a positive answer, but was true to the fact that I was absolutely miserable while pregnant.

Close friends and family got details...

@Applesandbananas: Nothing, I was just curious how people answer. We haven't publicly announced so the few people that know also know enough about our back story getting here. So I feel like they're asking because they care and not just to make small talk? Maybe I'll encounter more of that down the road. I dunno.

I tried to answer with a little good a little bad. Like first remaster I might say oh nauseous and tired but excited to start feeling kick soon or something like that. I ask people now how they're feeling because if they really are exhausted or can't cook while nauseous I want to make sure to offer some way to help them whether it's to watch their other kids for a little or bring a meal over or something that might help.

If it's someone I don't know, I usually just say "good". However, if it's a friend, I am usually honest. I know that when I ask my friends that question, I genuinely want to know, even if they are feeling miserable. For my first pregnancy, during the first tri my answer was: tired/nauseous/anxious, 2nd tri: fantastic, 3rd tri: uncomfortable but excited. This time around, it's 1st: tired/nauseous, 2nd: still sick, but a little more energy.

I always say "Fine, how are you?"

Occasionally people will do a little bit of a double-take, like they're irritated that I would imply there's anything wrong with asking about how a pregnant person is feeling. But I really don't know what else to do with the constant inquiries. When you ask a pregnant person how she's feeling (particularly in the 5-7 weeks between when I announced and when I actually started to feel some symptom relief), you're asking about her nausea, her exhaustion, her gassiness and constipation, her constant urination, her sciatica pain, her insomnia, her general misery, and unless you know her really well and are genuinely concerned, what on earth are you hoping to hear about from her? I give people a lot of benefit of the doubt in creating small talk and that they all really mean well, but getting this question over and over again every day for weeks really makes me to start to question. Like what do you want me to say?

So I'm sticking with "Fine, how are you." (At least now that I'm in the happy days of the later-2nd-trimester, it's true now. I feel pretty good! For now. Don't ask me in the third tri.)

I'm finishing my first trimester and I'm having good days and bad. I'm hearing a lot that I look awful or pissed off. And those people don't even know I'm pregnant. So I tell those people that I'm not feeling well.

I tell my mommy friends the truth when they ask but I tell most people "fine" as long as the expression on my face matches.

For people who should really know better since they were aware I had both GD and HG, like family and friends, I was really sick of answering this question and just started saying, "I guess as well as can be expected considering that I'm a needlephobe who has to check my blood sugar four times a day and has been hospitalized multiple times to get IV fluids..." and I can recall once or twice that I added on, "Plus there's the gestational diabetes diet, the twice a week stress tests, and the fact that I've already thrown up X times today. Oh, and the people who look at me like some terrible mother or pregnant person for not enjoying all of that." <--- Trust me, they deserved a snarky response. I'll spare you the long story.

For people who were just trying to be polite I always just said fine, or if it was a really bad day I'd just say, "Feeling ready to be done!" or, "I'm hanging in there."

Shortly after I made it public, I honestly kept forgetting I was pregnant, so I would just say, "Feeling good, how are you?" and was pleasantly surprised at people's concern with how I'm feeling!

But now that it's more on the forefront of my mind (towards end of 2nd tri), I change my answer depending on the setting. If it's a hallway pass-by, "Good, thanks!" is all they get. But if we're sitting together at lunch, I'll give a few more details.
