I plan on doing what my parents did for me - teach me that every action has a consequence. I never drank in high school, always wore my seat belt (and made anyone who was riding in my car wear theirs) and studied hard because I knew what could happen if I didn't. I think a lot of kids are told "don't do that" but aren't given concrete examples of what could happen. For instance, I was told "If you drink and drive, then get into an accident and kill someone, their family can sue your dad and I and take everything we have." Okay - drinking and driving = super bad. Got it!

Oh geez... kids can be so rude. I grew up in a very strict household and I never dared talked back to teachers or my parents. Well, I sometimes do now but unknowingly and I try to be more conscious of it now. I plan on raising my two boys in a similar manner so they don't turn out to be jerks. Well, at least that's the hope! All I can do is to try to set good examples and teach them as much as I can. The rest is up to them as to what kind of person they want to be.

@Rubies: This is why I cannot stand teaching grade 7s and 8s. I think it is partly a phase of life, as I've noticed that even the ones who are very respectful and have great manners slip up at that age.

I rode the bus home this morning after playgroup and a bunch of young teens boarded the bus...acting quite obnoxiously. My feeling is that these kids are flexing their independence and are probably pretty well behaved at home. It's when they're out of their parents sight that they act a bit more boisterously, so I'd not judge too quickly that they have no discipline at home. They might, and they might have parents that would be appalled at their public behaviour.

I think always being a parent, and not your child's friend is important. Also, setting rules and boundaries; and instilling a sense of community - being humble and giving back on a regular basis starting at a very young age.

Parents who can't say "no" cause a lot of problems!

@podomama: what a terrible situation!! ugh.

@Rubies: sorry!! I love your word jerkface though lol.

I agree with pp's, lack of discipline and standing your ground. I mean sometimes you are an amazing parent and your LO still makes poor choices. You can't ALWAYS blame parents, because in the end, kids make their own choices.

I heard my pastor say once that parents shouldn't ever have to take the credit for a bad kid just as they shouldn't take credit for a good one - because in the end, they choose their own path. You merely equip them with the tools to make the RIGHT decisions.

If you feel confident that you do this as a parent, then you can't take blame when LO's make poor decisions.

I was a jerkface in high school and my parents totally didn't tolerate it. That didn't mean that I respected their parenting efforts to mold me into a polite teen. I made my own choices and I regret them and how they hurt my friends and family. I really hope my LO doesn't turn out like me!!

Thankfully I grew out of it.

:( I was a high school teacher, too. I am also worried about this but also relieved because the good kids were the ones that came from kind of strict but very loving families (for the most part). I plan to be fairly strict.
I know that some of that rudeness just comes with the age no matter how good your kid is...

I think parents who don't care to be involved in their children's lives turn out having jerkface kids. I was looking around at the playground and 2 boys were pushing other kids down and laughing. One of them said, "get lost, stupid" to my little guy (SO mean) but come to find out their moms were chatting it up outside of the playground and not paying any attention to how their boys were behaving. Blah.

I'm sorry there were some rude kids in your class :-/ hopefully they won't give you too hard of a time.

Former high school teacher here and oh, I feel your pain. It's a pretty demanding job.

I went to Catholic school so there was not a lot of jerkfacin' going on, for the most part. Or at least, we had to be way sneakier about it because so little was tolerated and the punishment was usually severe. My bigger concern is having LO turn out to be entitled. Ugh, I could not handle that.

ohhhhhhh yes, there are parents out there that DO want their kids to be jerkfaces...or at least, they don't care if they become one or not. How do I know this ? Because my neighbors are those kind of parents....and their kids are appalling. Examples : they host parties for their kids and let them drink alcohol underage while they are there with them (how sad, they obviously haven't outgrown high school themselves) ....they probably let them do other drugs... It's disgusting, I so badly want to move to get away from them. They are not reflective of the others neighbors in my neighborhood.... I think we just got extremely unlucky =[

the use of "jerk face" in this thread is making me laugh. but i agree that i starts with the parents, although i'm not sure what kind of parenting would lead to this. i think it kind of has to do with a kids having a sense of entitlement and not respecting authority, but i'm not sure how to avoid instilling those in my children...or how my parents did that with us.

There is NO WAY that I would have ever disrespected a teacher. I was probably a much bigger jerk to my parents. If kids are being that jerky to a teacher, I shudder to think what they are like at home.

I agree that children who act that way at school act that way at home. Their parents either don't care because they are also jerk faces, or they are those stupid parents who want to be friends with their kids instead of being their parent and they are afraid to discipline. I don't think you are a jerk face or stupid so your LO should be juuuust fine.

Kids who act like that to a teacher probably act like that to their parents too. I see so many parents who have zero interest in discipline and just want to do the easy thing and give in to their kid's every whim. That's how you create a jerkface!

Awww.... sorry kids are being so mean to you! I feel like leading by example should work.

OMG. So, after being off work for 14 months, today was my first day back at work (I'm a high school teacher).

Some of my students (hormonal 15-year olds) are total jerkfaces! If I ever knew my kid was acting this way to her teachers, I think I would go mental on her!

But then it got me thinking: No one WANTS their kids to be rude and disrespectful people but how does one make sure it doesn't happen???
