We are diligently working as hard as possible now so that I will hopefully be able to step back into working fewer hours when LO is older so I can be more available for this kind of thing. We'll also share with other parents and look into the college student idea.

We might look into an au pair from my husband's native country. This way my son gets exposure to the language and has before/after care.

Yes it's common to hire a college student to chauffeur and watch the kids. My parents helped me out when my DD had a half day camp and I was at work. Also many camps have before and after care you can pay for. Swim team in the middle of the day is unfortunate. Ours is very early in the morning here. 7 am but at least you can take them to camp after that and get to work at a decent time.

@Mamaof2: Yep - The working moms I knew at my last job with school aged kids always had their kids find rides with SAHMs.

There are tutoring centers around here that offer pickup/drop off services for extra.. And I think hiring college aged students that do this on the side is pretty common.

I think in the future, we may enlist grandma/grandpa to help with this sort of thing.

Thank goodness for grandparents for us, but not sure if they will be able to continue as they get older.

I know some people that hire a high school student or college student for the summer to help with this.

So parents might drop off at morning camp and then the nanny would pick up and keep kids for the afternoon.

I plan on putting my kids in week long day camps (or the whole summer camp) - there wont be any individual classes - impossible for me to do!

However, a friend has her older DD do this and there are plenty of SAHM who are willing to shuttle around the kids.

When both you and your husband work full time in a scheduled environment (you can't leave any time you want to do school pick up, take your kid places, etc) how are you going to handle daytime events your child may want to go to?

Example: swim team. Swim team is during the day in the summer. It is not before work/school hours. How do you plan on getting your kid there and back to their after care/summer program? Or maybe the child just needs to get TO swim team and you can get to them by the end of it. Can working parents with set schedules manage this or do their kids just not get to do these types of things?
