As a kid I used to drive by huge mansions and daydream of someday living in one, but now I just see them as a big $$/time suck, with excess rooms to furnish, heat/cool and clean. No thanks! One of our homes growing up was 3400 and even that felt too big. There were so many rooms we rarely went in - formal living room, formal dining room, sunroom, study - plus I agree with pp that it's easier to become isolated as a family. There were 5 of us living there, but there were so many rooms we didn't use that it was just a waste of space! Plus, my mom had to have a maid to clean the dang thing. My absolute max would be about 3000. Any more than that and I'd have a hard time keeping up with the cleaning, not to mention the people living with me! I'd prefer a well planned 2,500 sq ft home. Lots of storage and a great layout can do wonders. I currently wish we would just chop off our living room and half of the playroom. Though, now that I think about it, I'd looove to take that 500 sq ft and add it to the master bedroom. Have a really nice, big space for my husband and I. We'll probably finish the basement at some point and that will get the sq ft higher but I can't imagine that we'd see each other less. But, when we were looking for our home the houses over 3,000 seemed too big. One of my older friends lives in a beautiful 6,600/7,000 sq ft home and it's gorgeous. If I could have a staff to clean and maintain it and maybe at least 2 kids to fill it with laughter I would take that house. Truthfully, we were looking at some 5000-6000 square feet homes and I ended up reigning DH back in to look at smaller houses. My DH is killing me. We're building a house and he found a floor plan that he REALLY loves. The house is freaking 5700 sq feet! No way Jose!! My dream home is 3,000-3500 sq feet. My parents have a 5200 sq foot home and it's SO BIG.
