I love these ideas for tangible items to remember your old home! I was also thinking of a way to say goodbye- in the book "eligible" (super cute fun read btw) before selling their childhood home, the adult children have a little ceremony where they all thank the house and remember a memory from it.

I would have loved to just have a portrait of my family in front of every place we've lived at growing up!

@Hypatia: I really love the artist, Timree. https://www.timree.com/ She will paint your home on a canvas, or on a large platter. I've seen it done a few different ways. She's amazing. Contact her directly about it, because I don't see it listed under her "shop" options.

And I love love love the lifestyle photo shoot idea.

I was going to suggest a drawing of it. My parents had pencil drawings of all of their houses done and then they are framed in their current house. We followed suit with our previous condo building. I love it. I think I used Teri Wyatt on Etsy.

I am so happy for you and your family, though I know this must be a very difficult transition. When we moved out of our first house DH and I lived in together I had a friend who is an artist do a beautiful drawing of it - it's a wonderful memory for us hanging in the hallway with our family photos and I love seeing it every day. I still want to do something similar (even though I'm years late) for the next house we were in where we brought DD1 home, as well as our current house (the first one we've owned and where we currently live).

The suggestions to do a lifestyle photoshoot are perfect too - I would probably do both :p

When we moved across the country for work, our realtor gifted us with a beautiful painting/print of the home she helped us sell. It was our first home and we would have stayed there forever had we not had to move. We have the print hanging in our new house and look at it daily.

Get a photographer to come in and do a shoot of the family at home, so you can remember the rooms and the way you used them. And get a nice shot of the exterior and then either frame that or have it turned into a canvas.

I know a bit how you feel - we just moved out of the home we bought a week after we got married. I didn't really think it would be our forever home but we were there for 12 years, we brought our kids home to that house, etc. I had a really hard time leaving, especially the boys' rooms - I poured my heart into those nurseries and it made me so sad to leave. Not going to lie, it still makes me sad, especially now that I know that the people who bought it are smokers - the thought of them smoking in my baby's room makes me so sad - but I digress.

Love the ideas above! We also had an Etsy artist paint my in law’s home for their 50th anniversary and it turned out great. We just provided a few photos and she made it look so nice.

Etsy shop was CarolLareuseStudio

@Hypatia: soooo hard. Hire a professional photographer and do lifestyle photography throughout home with family. Maybe do a video of day to day also so you all can keep it. I’d also think about a party? like a farewell party?

speak to a realtor or ( property management company)to see what they say about renting it out

My DH has been offered his dream job in the town we’ve always wanted to live in. It’s everything we could ask for...but we are still absolutely in love with the home we bought two and a half years ago. It’s a log cabin that’s just perfect for us. We bought it in foreclosure, and that combined with the higher COL in the new place we’ll be moving pretty much guarantees we will not be on a house as nice as this.

My DH is having a hard time letting go. We will try renting it out, but it’s in such a remote area that I’m not sure we can. Is there something I could do to honor and remember the old house once we move? Maybe have an Etsy artist draw it—any recommendations? Any other ideas?

We really thought this would be our forever home, and we’ve put so much of our time and emotional energy into it. It’s our first home. It’s where we watched our kids grow up. It’s going to be hard to leave it!
