@MaisyMay: I have been having these, maybe it is the hiccups. I have no clue what else it could be.

About 3 weeks ago, I was telling people that I thought women who sit there and go "oh, there's his little feet, oh his little butt's over here" were full of s*** because I couldn't tell what was what. But now I think I have a pretty good idea. It took me until around 29 or so weeks to really know where everything was. Basically, I knew he was head down when I started feeling hiccups in the lower right (you will know, they literally feel like hiccups -- they're slightly faster than ours), but I didn't feel hiccups until around 26, 27 weeks. Then when the doctor pointed out his head to me (I could literally feel it when I pressed) at 29 weeks, I could make out the rest of his anatomy. I get big nudges on the upper right (butt) and big pops on the upper left (feet) and flutters in the lower left (hands). Also the right side of my uterus gets hard where the left side doesn't, so that must be his back taking up that space. It takes some time though -- at least it did for me!

Hiccups are continual and at regular intervals. I didn't know exactly what body parts I was feeling until we had an u/s and i was able to ask a nurse what was in my ribs - it was his feet :)

@MaisyMay: I have felt those rapid little twitches, but still not sure those are hiccups yet. That's cool you actually got to see that on the u/s!

@MamaMoose: That makes total sense!

I was just telling my pregnant SIL about the hiccups! I was in the same "how the heck can you tell??" camp when I was first pregnant, but like others said, you know when it happens! But I could never tell the difference between punches and kicks.

The first time I felt hiccups I wasn't positive. They felt like very rapid little twitches. What helped is that she got the hiccups at one of our ultrasounds so we were able to see and feel at the same time. The U/S took longer because they had to wait for her to stop as they were trying to get specific measurements but it was pretty cool.

I agree with PP. You can tell they're hiccups because they're like a constant, rhythmic tapping.

You will know when its the hiccups, its a constant little tap at usually even intervals.

You'll know the hiccups when you feel them. I promise! They are rhythmic and last for a while. Very different from kicks/punches. That being said i could only tell kicks from punches because I knew she was head down. So feet were at the top of my belly and hands at the bottom. They felt like the same sensation to me.

I always read about women knowing when they're baby (in utero) is hiccuping, kicking vs. punching them, doing somersaults, etc.
If you could tell, I want to know HOW could you tell what was what? I can tell Baby Shopaholic has been kicking and moving since 18 weeks, but I can't exactly tell if it's a punch or a kick or a hiccup, etc. I "think" I can tell when she does a big turn, but a HICCUP? I don't know if I've felt that before. I tell DH sometimes she kicks so fast, like hard flutters, I feel like she's drumming really fast?
