I'd like to point out the too many hours napping is never the problem in my house. It's more like, shoot, it's 4 o'clock and this child has not napped nearly enough today and is going to have an absolute meltdown if she doesn't nap, but if it's going to take 20 minutes at least to get her to sleep, on the off chance that she sleeps more than half an hour, what do I do?

She's almost 4 months so I try to keep her awake times during the day to under 2 hours. TRY. Then a little longer before bed, depending on how much she slept throughout the day.

HA! My LO (1 year now) has basically never napped after 4 PM, ever, no matter what. So we've never had an issue  He does often go to bed at 6:15 though!

Depends on how desperate the situation is but usually 5:30 for a 6:30/7 bedtime

Generally if she's not down by 4/4:30 then there is no chance of a nap anyway.

I always have a tough time with this. I don't really have a cut-off but usually her last nap starts around 4:30 or 5. Today she napped from 5-6pm and I'm just putting her down to sleep at 8. She's 3m so she still naps 4 times a day and I basically just follow her cues. There are days where I've put her down for a nap at 6:30.

It used to be 4:30 for a bedtime of 6pm. Now she can't nap past 3pm, bedtime is 7pm.

Omg. It's rainy and gloomy today so DS was super sleepy.
He went down for nap #3 at 3:30pm. He's still sleeping! I don't think he's going to wake up. Haha.

@illumina: haha that is a good thing to judge by! Sleep is ok. Still a work in progress but compared to a few weeks ago so much better. I think we may do a little sleep training to help with the motn wake ups and naps, but Dh puts her to bed awake every night now. However, I'm fearful that the 4 month sleep regression is starting...

We are on a loose 234 schedule and her bedtime is 7:30 so I usually wake her up by 4. But she only takes 30 min naps so this isn't usually a problem... Lol.

His bedtime is 8 and he's mostly on a one-nap schedule so it's been a moot point, but when he was on 2 naps I tried to allow at least 3 hours of awake before bedtime.

He's taking a random second nap right now, and if I wake him up now he'll still probably go to bed an hour later but last night was so awful for both of us that I'm just rolling with it. He's still sick, he needs the sleep.

We do 234. Usually she's up from her last nap by 4:30 at the latest (7:30 bedtime). Yesterday her naps were screwed up because we had to get up earlier than usual in the morning, so she woke up from her second nap at 3. She fell asleep on my back (I was wearing her) while I was making dinner. I woke her up at 5:50 and she still went to bed no problem at her usual time.

Her bedtime is 8-9pm and I'll make sure she's awake by 7pm-- though she usually is. She's 10wks and goes down fine, so I don't think it matters too much for us.

C goes to bed between 7:30 and 8, and I won't let her sleep past 6, though if she has had decent naps during the day, I'll try to rouse her by 5:30. I hate to wake her since she has such a hard time napping, but otherwise the night just falls apart.

What's your cut off, if any?
