It depends on the context of each situation. I have to weigh a study vs what is practical in real life. For example, absolutely no screen time is unrealistic, and I will have it on around dd but if dd starts to watch it I turn it off. I bottle fed my daughter because it was what was best (even for her) in the context of what was going on at the time. I am planning to rear face her til at least two. We read books pretty much every single day. I don't plan on spanking her. I follow many RIE practices.

I think studies on behavior are just as important, but I think they have to be balanced with one's cultural and family values. For example, I can understand the reasons both for and against CIO. I also think that maternal instinct is important, too. We know our LOs the best, after all.

@blackbird: I agree a lot with this.

I think it's important to do your own research, but ultimately make decisions that work the best for you and your family. For instance, screen time seems to be a big no-no, but as I solo-parent most of the time with DH traveling, you can bet that bouncer gets plopped in front if the tv so I can pump/get something (anything!) done! Same with sleep, I'm doing me best to follow all the "key" points, but this momma's gotta sleep so nursing and rocking to sleep happens quite a bit (not sure if this is more of a "research" thing or a "recommendation" thing)!

Very seriously. I research every decision, both gear-wise and parenting/behavioral methods.

I read but I don't follow to a tee for everything. My LO had very little screen time for the first 2 years with the exception of the Olympics and some sports...I'm pretty she wasn't damaged.

Pretty seriously. I have a background in public health and so for one, I understand the science behind them and for another, I respect them. I rely more in current recommendations from groups like the CDC or AAP than an individual study though.

It does drive me bonkers when people say they have thoroughly researched a top and disagree with recommendations. Reading a lot of blogs does not equal a team of scientists with years and years of epidemiology training doing a meta analysis of all available data.

I pay attention to these things because those studies are there for a reason. But I also use a lot of common sense and gut instinct and just what I feel like/want to do. But I think science is important and I take it into consideration often.

for example: all the new stuff about rear facing? 100% accepted it and applied it

Researches on safety, gear recalls, foods to avoid, sleep aids, etc. - yes 99% of the time I follow guidelines of aap, cdc, etc

Things on behavioral affects, etc. - I read for knowledge/curiosity, but don't adhere to it all the time. I pick and choose what works for us.

I love and care for my child in the best way I know, I pray for his well being now and in the future. DH and I are lucky enough to provide for his wants and needs and show him we love him every chance we can, both consciously and unconsciously. I'm not extremist in any way and am a firm believer of "everything in modesty" is okay. I know it's a very general context that I'm speaking from, but for the most part, those studies don't push me one way or another because I know I'm doing everything in my power for my child's well-being and happiness!
