Well I live in the south so we don't do cold. I don't know what the actual rule is, but I've never seen kids outside at daycare if it's under 50-55 degrees :)

ETA: it's 32 degrees, I looked it up.

So I haven't seen anyone outside since late Nov I guess. That's not to say that they don't take the older kids out during the day time when sun is out, but they definitely haven't been taking my 18 month old out

The kids are out for hours each day at preschool, except during heavy rain. The cut-off temp is about the same as @Charm54: at around -15°C / 5°F. It usually doesn't get much colder around these parts, so anything colder is considered very cold. It was -25°C /-13°F the other day, but that's pretty rare and doesn't last very long.

The kids are out for hours each day, on the rare occasions they stay in, they use the elementary school's indoor gym (the preschool is located in a separate wing of the elementary).

@regberadaisy: Lol to your reply to @Charm54:
I'm a teacher in Canada too, our school is -20 as well.

When I worked in daycare before I got on my school board for pre-schoolers we did the same as elementary school, -20, but for the toddlers we wouldn't take them out if it was that cold. Sometimes when it was a long stretch of coldness we would dress up all the kids and take them out for like 5 min... essentially enough time to walk to the playground and back, but it did help get some some fresh air. The hour of getting dressed/undressed was kind of a pain though lol.

I didn't know so I just looked and there are no regulations for our province. They do have outside time every day at our daycare until around -15 Celsius.

@LovelyPlum: I'm not sure if it's different in the 4 yo room. But in the 3 yo it has to be above 32z. The other day it was a scheduled snow play day but it was only 30 out. The teachers "cheated" and went out with the kids anyway. :P

32. But I don't think it is a huge deal here. In this area it tends to go up and down throughout the winter, and since my LO is 1 and refuses to keep on hat or gloves I don't really want her out when its 10 degrees anyways. If she was older I'd prefer she go out more though.

It's 25 or 30 degrees at our daycare in Pennsylvania. Although, I think the toddlers stay in more when it's 30-35. They get morning outside time, but not always afternoon. The preschoolers are more likely to be out more often. It seems pretty appropriate for our climate.

I live in North Dakota. I don't know if there is a rule, but it seems schools always send the kids outside. This last friday they did stay indoors, but it was -18F actual temperature with a wind chill of -35F. Daycare seems to let the kids stay inside if it is below 0F.

I'm in colorado and my understanding is that liscensing doesn't specify a temperature, just that it's not actively raining or snowing & kids have proper clothing. Personally, I take my students out for at least 15 min, twice a day, even if it's very cold, except for kids who don't have their winter gear (hats, mittens, boots, etc).

Same but it doesn't bother me. Especially with wind chills. I wouldn't want to go outside at that temp as a teacher and freeze my butt off while standing around watching the kids play. They do dance or some other activity that gets them moving.

We're in NY and the day care doesn't take out the kids once it's winter. I think they just don't want to bother, even if it's a nice mild winter like this one. I'm happy with them overall, but this is one of the things I wish they'd change!

I'm in Wisconsin and it's my centers policy that we take them out twice a day as long as it's above 0 degrees ( with the windchill). I think the temp is 20 degrees with windchill for kids under 2. We stay out about 20-30 minutes. After getting all those kids dressed there is no way we are turning back in after only 5!

Wow. The kids would never go outside here if it was 32. DD1 goes to a nature preschool and they spend half the day outside. I believe the wind chill needs to be above 0 degrees F for them to have school. The kids are all so adorable bundled up in their snowsuits at drop off. It's not helping me learn to tell them apart though LOL.

I'm in Ontario, and the provincial guidelines say if it's below -15 (before wind chill) they can't go outside. I think they also use their judgement - the other day it was pretty cold and they said they went outside, but only for a few minutes (which made me laugh, because it probably took five times that long to get 15 toddlers in boots, coats, snow pants, hats, and mittens).

55 at daycare LOL. It does get very cold here with a lot of wind so that can definitely factor in.
The school I work at its kind of case by case. We have a lot of kids who don't come to school with coats/own coats so it just depends.

there is no law that I know of but school boards tend to keep kids in if it's between -20 and -28 Celsius.

The daycare my LO attends won't take the infant room out if they aren't going to enjoy it. My LO usually naps during outside time and hasn't been out with daycare in a few weeks.
