@mrs. wagon: i'm not against dogs being outside. i've had a handful of dogs at work (german shepherds and golden retrievers, never a little dog though) and spent lots of time outside with them, and some had a gated area or lead, this dog is on a small front porch, more like a balcony, with no water or a bed or even a blanket to lay on. we keep our trash out there until trash day and it rips our trash open, fortunately hasn't gotten sick from it yet. it goes to the bathroom all over the porch because they don't walk it most of the time, they just let it go out there, which is rude to us and gross for the dog. they really just don't take care of it.

i'm home now, the dog isn't outside and they aren't home, so they either took it with them or left it inside their apt. i was going to take a pic of him (his name is oreo) if he was still out there. if i remember correctly, he looks like @pui: 's dog (i love your dog pics! he's adorable!). @bluestriped bee: from his nose to his butt, he's the same length or a little shorter than my cat. i don't know what type he is though, i'm not familiar with a lot of dog breeds, he's light but has dark on his head and back and always looks like he has dirty eyes, but i think that's just how the breed looks. i thought of putting my cat's carrier out there with a blanket, but then my cat would never go in it again :( i think i'll ask SO to talk to the husband, just say that since it's gotten cold the dog has been barking for hours at a time and we think it's because it's cold and could they please keep the dog in their apartment, that way we aren't coming right out and calling them dog abusers, which i'm guessing they wouldn't take kindly to. if it happens again, i'll put it in the hallway inside again and then ask animal control to come talk to them- they have a little girl and i would feel really bad taking her dog away, but she needs to learn to take care of it!

I think outdoor dogs are fine (seems a little mean to do it to such a small one though) but they need adequate water accessible, a long enough lead if they're tied off, and shelter in the winter / shade in the summer.

@Mrs. Polish: leaving a dog without adequate shelter or sufficient natural resources (like THICK fur) when it's close to freezing outside IS putting it in clear danger.

I'm not a vet but I heard dogs build their coat when they are outside. How small is this dog? Like a Pomeranian? Or like a pug or beagle?

I do think a Pomeranian is a bit small to be outside in the cold.

You could call a local vet about it. See what they say. If they seem concerned then I would call animal control.

I would absolutely call your local shelter. There is no way that a small breed dog should be left outside in the cold all night. It's barking for a reason!

Some people shouldn't be allowed to have pets.

Is the dog unhealthy? Too thin, unkempt? Personally, I'm of the camp dogs are animals. If the dog is fed and not in clear danger, I would mind my own business.

@mrs. bird: too cold :( If you can't bring him in your apartment I'd probably gather evidence (make sure the dog is really out there overnight, take notes/pics) and then contact animal control. I know we have plenty of no kill shelters up here, but I'd also make sure you find out what animal control would do with the dog, in case the local pound isn't no-kill, so you can contact another shelter yourself.

I'd take it inside and leave a note, like others said.

@mrs. bird: honestly, Id take it to a no kill shelter or call animal control before it dies. That is so unfair for that poor dog. If you cant find a shelter then I would alert your landlord.

I wouldn't have let my last dog (who was 16 lbs) out for more than 20 minutes or so (so he could go to the bathroom and sniff the yard). I let him in as soon as he barked, I never left him out there in the cold!! My new dog is only 8lbs and is already shivering and it's only October, I'm wary of just taking him for walks, nevermind leaving him outside for extended periods of time!

It's way too cold tonight in New England for a dog to be outside, unless it's got a thick fur coat, and even then.....don't be a dick, dogs are pack animals, bring them inside with their pack.

I transport rescues from down south up to New England on the weekends, and we're putting sweaters on all the dogs because it is COLD!

That makes my heart hurt thinking of that poor pup :( I would try to get it in somewhere if you can, and I'd also be the "jerk" who alerted the landlord to an illegal dog. The shelter situation up here, especially for small dogs, is nothing like it is in many areas of the country. If they give the dog up, it will find a home that actually cares about it very quickly.

Um way too cold. My little beagle mix doesn't have too much fur (not like a big furry Labrador) so I just consider her to experience the temperature like I do. She shivers when it's cold outside and she's been out more than a few minutes in the backyard to go potty and we put a little sweater or coat on her when we go out for walks in the winter. I'd report it to someone....or just take the dog myself...

i'm so sad for the dog. they left it out all summer when it was blazing hot and when i get up at 6 it's usually out there, so i'm assuming they're leaving it out all night, but maybe not, maybe they get up earlier than i do & put it out. there have been mornings this week where it's been in the upper 20s! i don't understand why they have it if they're not going to have it inside. it's not like we live in a rural area where dogs run free, they live in an apartment building that doesn't even allow dogs! i think i'm gonna leave it in the hallway for the night with the door to the porch cracked open, i'll pretend the door wasn't tight and it got in.

It's definitely too cold to leave a dog outside, unless it's a husky or St. Bernard or other breed with a dense coat and bred for cold weather. I'd bring the dog inside and leave them a note or call animal services or the non-emergency police line or something.

our neighbors across the hall have a tiny dog, it's furry but less than a year old, and it's been barking on the front porch we share for an hour straight. i think it's cold! it's maybe 40 degrees right now, but it's going to get even colder. SO tried knocking on their door, but no one is answering. i had him open the door so it could get in the hallway to warm up, i'm afraid it's gonna die of hypothermia. how cold is too cold to leave a small dog outside for hours at a time or overnight? i've never had a dog, maybe i'm being irrational and they're hardier than i think. should i put it back outside? it doesn't even have a dog bed or a blanket our there :(
