Even across the house and down a level I can hear him well enough (we watch TV in the basement after he goes to bed). But I like that I can turn the screen on if I hear him crying, and determine if I need to go in or not. I could hear him fine from our room without it, so I didn't worry a whole lot but I can see that if you can't hear him with both doors shut that can be a little stressful for you. Why not just invest in a cheap audio monitor and be able to sleep in your room again and then you can keep it as a back up, or to use when traveling? There's our bathroom, a closet, and a guest bathroom in between us all.
