We are in the next room, with both doors closed and can hear her if she cries. Have you experimented being in your room during a nap and seeing how loud your LO is when the doors are closed? You don't want to hear all the little peeps anyways. You want to hear I NEED YOU cries.

We have a video monitor, but only so we can see him when we already know he is crying. Even across the house and down a level I can hear him well enough (we watch TV in the basement after he goes to bed). At 2, I only watch him on it because I think he's so cute, haha.

We leave the sound off, but he just started tummy sleeping so I'm still a little crazy about watching him for breathing if I wake-up in the middle of the night. I've learned that if he's awake and pissed, I will know... as will the rest of the neighborhood.

I'd feel very uncomfortable, even though I actually keep the monitor screen on "sleep" mode and turn audio off. But I like that I can turn the screen on if I hear him crying, and determine if I need to go in or not. Other than that, haven't used audio for months and I sleep better that way.

We don't sleep with a monitor on, but I'm a light sleeper and we have a one-story house so I can hear LO when he cries at night, even over his sound machine and down the hall and through 2 closed doors.

I'm thinking about getting one now that there are two kids and three floors.

We use our video monitor when we are in the living room, but our audio monitor in the bedroom is silenced. Her room is across the hall from ours and I can hear her with no problem. We keep all of our doors open and the house is all one level.

I probably need to stop using the audio because it's always silenced!

I have no issues sleeping without a monitor after 6 months. I can hear my daughter when she coughs in her sleep still at 2 1/2 years old, I don't have a fear that I wouldn't hear her if she needed me. Especially 2 doors down.

We hardly used ours, even when our son was small...it made me more anxious, to be honest. Our bedroom was right next to the nursery, there was no where I could go in our one floor apartment where I couldn't have heard him.

We are on a different floor on the opposite side if the house from lo and with her white noise on we can't hear her when she cries. Our video monitor is flukey so I bought a super cheap (like $20) audio monitor that we leave on as backup.

I slept with a monitor the first few months and then we switched to a video monitor that had a broken speaker (from ebay so couldn't easily return) so I had to use it without sound. I could hear him fine from our room without it, so I didn't worry a whole lot but I can see that if you can't hear him with both doors shut that can be a little stressful for you. Why not just invest in a cheap audio monitor and be able to sleep in your room again and then you can keep it as a back up, or to use when traveling? When we upgraded to a proper video monitor I gave my mom our audio one for when she babysits or when we visit and LO needs to nap.

I have the video monitor but I use it less and less now. We just keep the video on, no sound. When I was at my parents' this weekend, I had no monitor. I can hear him if he's crying so i don't worry about it too much. I have it on mostly so I can just check on him, not so I can hear him.

While we have our monitor on silent (video), E's room is probably 20 feet away from our bed on the same floor. There's our bathroom, a closet, and a guest bathroom in between us all. And i can still totally hear her if she wakes up crying.

I think if T is only two rooms away, you could certainly hear him if he started crying!!!! Honestly, if we didn't have a video monitor, we wouldn't even bother with having one. Even if we are downstairs watching tv, we can hear her crying!

The battery in our monitor just kicked the bucket, so we haven't been using one recently! It sucks and I can't wait to get another one!! Our rooms are just across the hall from each other but I'm also afraid I won't wake up if he's crying. I really like the video portion too to see if he's awake etc.

We've never had a baby monitor. I think you'd be surprised at how sensitive you are to baby noises.

Is there somewhere else that you can put the dog for the night?

We sleep with our bedroom door closed, and LO's door open. I close it when we're up in the main area, and then open it right before going to bed. Then I tip toe out of bed and close it again before I make any getting ready noise in the morning, and it works just fine.

@Foodnerd81: We don't have a gate. :(
I cracked his door some while I'm sleeping in the living room. I can see his door from here so I'm HOPING it'll be fine. But DH gets up at 3am for work and if he's even slightly too loud T wakes up even through his white noise and closed door. So I hope that doesn't hurt us
