It's so funny - our six-year-old has always known that Santa Claus is pretend, but she just lost her third tooth this week, and is all in on the tooth fairy! Not sure why knowing about one hasn't led to the penny dropping on the other, but I'm sure we're on borrowed time . . .

My daughter's first two teeth were knocked out when she fell as a toddler and she hasn't lost any other teeth yet but she asked me one day on a bike ride (at age 6) about the tooth fairy and I asked her what she thought and she said she wasn't sure and for me to just tell her. So I told her the truth and she didn't care. A week or two later she asked about Santa and we had the same convo. She seemed excited to realize it was us leaving her cool things in her stocking. She's keeping the secret for her younger brother but loves to look at me when we talk about Santa.

It's interesting that every kid is so different in when they ask/figure this stuff out. DS is 9 and seems to still believe in Santa and the tooth fairy. At Easter this year, he was pretty skeptical of the Easter bunny, but then guessed that maybe it was Santa leaving the eggs and candy because that seemed more realistic :silly: I'm also wondering if there's an age where you just kind of tell them or make it obvious. I don't want him to be in a situation where he finds out at school or gets teased for believing for too long.

@Mommy Finger: I can definitely see the appeal of an app to manage money like that! For now we have realized that DD understands value much better when she is getting to work with the actual cash. We require her to divide it up in three categories - spend, save, and share - and having her physically do it with her piggy bank makes sense for now. But as she gets older I think it could be great!

@catgirl: We currently use the app Rooster as sort of a bank between us and the kids. That's where we give them any small allowance and also where they can save money (they give it to me and I log it in the app). The best part about this was my oldest would just give me the money after the toothfairy came so I was just using the same few dollars every time!

For my oldest, once he confronted me about Santa and we had "the talk", all of the other holidays crumbled with it. He had just turned 9. He still keeps it alive for his brother though.

Mine never believed in it. He figured out Christmas and Easter at around 5.5. He lost his first tooth after that and by then, he knew it was all us.

@catgirl: We use a tooth pillow that hangs on the door as well. I also get it out when his tooth is very loose or has fallen out which serves as a reminder and also prevents him from loosing a tooth and not telling me.

I keep some singles in an envelope so we always have cash on hand but planning out the total amount needed is genius! Going to do that for his remaining teeth and our little one.

@ElbieKay: I like the idea that if you ruin it for the others in your family you also stop getting stuff from them!

DD is 7 almost 8 and hasn't really questioned any of these types of things. She will occasionally say "is so and so real?" and I'll respond "what do you think?" She always says yes and drops it. So I'm curious how it will play out.

@bhbee: We do a little bag that hangs on the door as well! It's the absolute best because I know DD would wake up if I tried to go in her room. Also, I have to get the bag out for her whenever she needs it which is a good tool to lower my chances of forgetting to put money in it!

Another random tip - when she had her first loose tooth and we figured out how much we were going to do per tooth I got all of the cash at once and it lives in my jewelry box. That way I never have to worry about having cash on me!

My son never believed in the tooth fairy. I’m not sure why or how he found out but he’s always known “it’s your parents”. He still puts his teeth under his pillow to get the money though!

At our house we still haven’t figured this out! My oldest is close to 11 and just the type to believe so I think she still believes in everything, as far as I can tell - she just *wants* to believe. But she’s almost out of teeth :silly:

My middle child questions everything so surely once my oldest gives it up it’s all over.

The best thing I’ve done is get them little tooth fairy pillows that hang on the door. I’m still worried about forgetting but it’s a lot easier to get it done without waking them!

My son put two and two together around age 7. We still keep up the facade because of his younger sisters. The big kid knows that if he ruins the Tooth Fairy, the Easter Bunny, or Santa Claus for his sisters then he will no longer receive any gifts from any of these magical creatures.

My kid lost his first tooth at age 5.5 and he asked the next morning, “Who is the tooth fairy REALLY? Is it you?” I asked what he thought. He said he thought it was me. So yeah, I told him the truth then and there! Haha. He didn’t really seem disappointed or anything. He still thinks it’s fun, all these teeth later, to leave it under his pillow for the “tooth fairy.”

I haven't personally dealt with this yet, but my niece was 10 or 11 and my SIL just forgot one night to take the tooth. So she asked my SIL about it the next morning and said she pretty much had already figured it out about the tooth fairy...but it led to a very sad conversation about Santa and she didn't know that yet.

Out of all the weird holiday things we lie to our kids about, the tooth fairy has always been my absolute least favorite. I think because they lose SO many teeth and my kids just aren’t deep sleepers so I’m always worried they will catch me. Thinking ahead though, how did your kids find out the tooth fairy wasn’t real? Or did you just tell them at some point?
