Our washer just died a month or so ago. The one we replaced was almost 20 years old, so we went for a basic top loader, that was as similar as possible to our original. It was also one of the cheapest, and ideal since we CD. Our dryer is even older and still chugging, so we'll probably use the same logic to replace that one when the time comes.

We bought from Lowe's since the price was the same everywhere, and they had next day delivery and haul away, even on Sunday....and financing or discount with their credit card.

@scg00387: This is what I thought, too; honestly I drew up a bunch of wants. I wanted a front load washer that could scrub the hell out of little kid stains and a front load dryer that simply did it's job (front load so I could stick a countertop on top and fold clothes there). I found a more basic front load model that had the basic features I wanted and bought them on super sale. Honestly, I paid less than I would have for a decent top loader and capacity isn't bad, my queen size comforter fits but because water is measured thanks to the HE, I can wash small loads easily, too. :)

Have you tried walking around Lowes on a weekend? Sometimes they're getting rid of the display models, which have never been used and have a steep discount that you can negotiate further.

I told DH that I wanted HE and a top loader. Then I let him do the research and decide. That is my advice, make your DH do it

@808love: they seem to have redesigned the models since last year (makes sense, they'd looked the same for 4-5 years); we have a GE DOE front load washer and dryer. It was not great for cloth diapering but great for everything else, the amazing 2 hour stainwash is my friend - it got old formula stains out of cute Gymbo dresses. :)

I needed to have a stackable front loader, so I narrowed that way first. Then I had to decide if steam was worth it, because it makes a huge difference in cost. I ultimately decided it wasn't, though sometimes I wish I had it. I ended up being attracted to an LG set, and when it went on sale I pulled the trigger on it. It can help to walk around a store with them and see what you like.

@scg00387: That's what we did . . . after looking at several options (capacity was huge for us, too), we decided how much we *didn't* want to spend, and then re-assessed. Ultimately, we got an incredible deal on an Electrolux front-loading washer/dryer (the 18 minute wash/dry cycles have been a life saver!) that I otherwise would not have bought because we bought the (impeccable!) floor model . . . otherwise, our top contenders were LG and Samsung.

@MsLipGloss: @Weagle: Maybe that is my problem... we don't have a budget set - we saved a bunch of money for home stuff so it's not necessarily the determining factor. Obviously I'd rather spend less than more - but it's hard to determine what is "worth" more money in comparing stuff you know? I'm going to go look at that thread with recommendations and maybe try to set a range though..

@Alivoo01: Sooo I'm glad I posted this.. I had no idea they even had different size capacities. That sounds so stupid now that I type it out, of course they do!! We've always just used whatever the apartment provided, so it never occurred to me that could be a factor :)

We bought our washer and dryer last year on sale at this time at Home Depot; they were having a fourth of July sale on a bunch of different models and it saved us an extra $600 for the set, plus free delivery. :) We chose based on reviews and personal experience (my parents have a similar washer and dryer to ours)

Size/capacity was my biggest concern. Next was budget followed by features. Check out floor models at different stores or outlet places. We got a steal of a deal for buying a floor model. It was in pristine condition.

I am overwhelmed with the options.. our house came with a washer/dryer and the dryer has bit the dust. We want to buy high-efficiency but I have no clue where to even start deciding what is best. There are too many options!

Any tips on where to start??
