I had exactly this -- a combo OB/midwife practice with 2 OBs and 2 midwives. I loved it. I ended up with GD so it was great to have the OBs I needed to see and the midwives with a more "holistic" approach, all in one practice. I ended up being delivered by my favorite midwife too, which was great.

@Sugar.Biscuit: I'm a birth photographer, which gave me a chance to see a ton of doctors and midwives working. Eventually, I realized a midwife would be best for me ... I loved the hand-off approach during labor/delivery. Typically, midwives and doctors won't be at the birth together (I've seen it a few times) ... when that happens, the midwife usually takes the form of your doula as they aren't always allowed to assist deliveries in hospitals.

@maybebaby: Not creepy at all! My doc is based on a birth story rec as well (albeit not here, as I'm still relatively new to HB). I figured you can't beat word of mouth. I've been really happy with both OBs so far. (Even though they are both guys, which I don't really care about, and only a few years older than I am.) I'll be kind of disappointed if I end up with a different on-call OB...

@Sugar.Biscuit: I had just moved to a new state, very far from my old city, when we found we were pregnant. So I searched some online local mommy boards and just went with the practice that most people seemed to go to in my town. So far, I've been mostly happy (I like all the doctors except one in the group), and they have low rates of C-section, so that's good.

But honestly, it was a total stab in the dark.

I've been going to the same gynecologist since I was a teenager. There are 5 women obs and 4 midwifes in the practice. I decided to stick with the obs because I just feel more comfortable with them and knowing if there's an emergency the doctor is already there. I'm also not someone who needs to spend a lot of time with my doctor. I ask the question I need and I'm done. I wanted an epi so I didn't feel the need to have the midwife there the entire time. I always had my nurse and that was enough.

Mine was recommended by a good friend of mine. I switched to the practice so I could deliver at the hospital I wanted. It's the fairly new women's hospital in the city. I ended up liking most of the doctors in my practice when I had to rotate through with them during my pregnancy.

Mine is an OB/gyn. He is a family friend, so I knew when I moved here in college I would start seeing him. He is wonderful and I know he makes every decision thinking about how my parents would think (my dad is a dr). I know each thing he tells me would be the same thing he would tell his wife and daughter.

i looked up reviews for ob/gyn in my area and got the second one on my list. though in the end i was not very pleased and will hopefully find someone else for my next pregnancy. he wasn't horrible though, so if i had to , i would go back. the more i read about midwives though, the more i think i will look into it.

I went to the same practice my SIL went to, so her recommendation. I rotated between a CNP and a MW. Unfortunately neither of them have delivery privileges at our hospital, so the OB on call delivered DS, but we ended up loving him. Had I had a higher-risk pregnancy or needed a planned induction my care would have been transferred to one of the two OBs at our satellite practice and the induction would have been scheduled when one of them was on on-call at the hospital.

@Foodnerd81: This is totally creepy, but as I approach our L&D I searched for Mt. Auburn to see if any bees had delivered there. We are also seeing the midwives at Mt. Auburn and I am really looking forward to labor/delivery/post partum there. It seems so warm and comfortable! Nice to see another bee will be delivering there :)

The practice is a mix of OBs and a midwife, so I knew they were open to various birth choices. The head doctor is one of the top 100 in the area. They deliver at the hospital I wanted. And it was convenient.

I see an OB that's a DO. I saw him at first for my annual because he specializes in NFP, but I was not 100% convinced I would stay with him when I got pregnant. I don't know, he seemed a tiny bit awkward at first. BUT, that completely changed when I had my mc. The office got me in right away, the nurses were awesome, and he was super awesome. Easy to talk to, made sure I understood everything, and followed up a few weeks later. There is no way I'm going anywhere now. They've been great for this pregnancy too.

I know I'm very lucky, because I've picked doctors based on this criteria before when we lived in other cities, and it did not always work out. I think the main thing is to feel comfortable and that you. feel like you're being heard. I know I can't stay with a.doc that makes me feel uncomfortable.

Good luck!

I knew I wanted a midwife practice where I was all but assured of delivering with a midwife (assuming no complications, of course) but I also wanted it to be in a hospital. So I did some googling and found exactly that-- a midwife practice with a birthing center in a hospital, so if anything goes off the plan, it's just a short elevator ride to the regular labor and delivery ward. They get good reviews online from what I saw, too. I couldn't really rely on word of mouth because none of my friends with babies had the same wishes for their birth as me (ie, midwife, hoping to go natural / no epi, etc).

@mrsmate: I'm curious who you see, being in the Boston area too! I'm seeing the midwives at Mount Auburn.

I knew I wanted a midwife, but I also wanted to find a practice that was covered by my insurance. I contacted the hospital to see what local practices had midwives on staff and then began sifting through reviews and feedback. Having a natural birth is important to me so I really wanted to find a practice that fit my outlook.

I wanted to be sure they had the same birthing philosophy, had experience in a wide range of "types" of delivery (breech being one of them), had a low intervention rate, gives ample time for appts and their "stats" for induction, cesarean, natural births, medicated births, losses, episiotomies, successful vbacs etc.

Ie. My MW has delivered over 800 babies ranging from breech, vbac, multiples, ftm, s/ttm, only seen one 4th degree tear in 20 years, has a low transfer rate, and only had to help 1 baby breathe (it was a DS baby and was just a bit sleepy), and all of my appts were 45min-1hour long. Knowing she was familiar with a wide range of situations, knew how to handle them, and could give me the time I felt I needed was important to me.

I think knowing what kind of birth you want is important in finding a good provider! It's NEVER too early to start discussing your birth desires with your provider BUT you can do it too late & then find you have a provider that doesn't have the same outlook/practices you're looking for. (Happens all. the. time.)

My wonderful GP took a medical leave of absence right before I got pregnant, so I went on the hunt for an OBGYN. I simply asked around, and looked at reviews, before settling on my current OB. She's a great doctor, and I feel safe with her, but she's very quick at appointments.

My mom had high risk pregnancies, and I've dealt with estrogen dominance throughout my life, so I figured my pregnancies might be a little tricky. Turns out I'm very low risk, so I'll go with a midwife, next time.

I'm kinda of leaning towards an obgyn/midwife combo. If we even have that in our area. My GP has delivered several babies & has seen many woman through their pregnancies. I'm considering staying with him but like the idea of the peace of mind id have with an obgyn & having a midwife for support.
