I do what oahujeni does, but with the plastic/wood toys I usually wipe down with diluted vinegar. Stinky, but all-natural and safe!

@oahujeni: Good call on taking the fabric off! Most has been stored in a few places-- closet, then storage unit, then attic!

I always wash the fabric and wipe down other parts with Lysol wipes. If an item hasn't been used in a while (like a swing), make sure you take off the fabric and check the plastic underneath for mold. I found some on a swing I borrowed because it had been sitting in their garage (in humid FL) for over a year. It easily came off with a few squirts of bleach.

If you received hand me down gear with soft/cloth pieces-- like a car seat or swing-- from someone you know and trust, how did you clean it, or did you just glance over and make sure it looks clean enough?

I'm really lucky that I've been given a bunch of stuff like that from my sister, who I am sure kept the stuff clean, but a lot of it hasn't been used in 2 years. Not sure if I should be spot cleaning, or putting some things in the wash?

For plastic or wood toys, I figure I will wipe it down first with something like a Clorox wipe then rinse it in clean water? Also, how soon did you do that stuff? I'm due in just under 3 months-- stuff I clean now will be clean enough then, right?
