I had Emerson picked out before I met DH. I was in Target one day and a little ornery girl in pigtails was runnign up and down the aisle and her dad was calling her name, and I loved it. DH took awhile to get on board. Her middle name is my maternal grandmother's maiden name (family tradition for the first girl born.) We are in trouble if we have girl #2, we can't agree on anything!

We had the HARDEST time with a girl name! Years before we got pregnant we decided on a boy name (family name, middle name we like) and didn't even start thinking of girl names until we knew that LO was a 'she'.
I even started kind of backwards, knowing first that I wanted our daughter's middle name to be Jean, after my great aunt and coincidentally also DH's aunt's middle names. So that posed a challenge. Eventually we each made a list of names we loved and put them into Nymbler.com to see what they came up with. We also used Baby Name Wizard to narrow down names based on the trends I saw with our list and that's how we found the name we chose!
I had never heard it before but it was on their list of suggestions. It nodded to both of our mothers names and we also loved the many nickname options available.
Our daughter ended up being named Ellora Jean. We call her Ellie or Lora for short

And - I love SO MANY of the names on your list. You've already got a great selection to choose from!

I like all the names you've listed but my favorite is Eleanor.

We had no problem with the girl name either time (like you team green both times) however our boy name was the problem. I wanted something that was classic and if possible a family connection.

DD's name is Evelyn Claire: DH's grandmother was named Evelyn (turns out so was my grandmother's best friend) and DH just randomly picked Claire which I liked but not as a first name.

Second child was a boy (Thomas George) but if a girl the name would have been Elyse Carol: Elyse was just a name I liked and Carol was DH's mom's first name and my grandmother's middle name.

Just by going on the rhythm of the names a lot of the names you picked have 3 syllables which might sound nice with a simpler 1 syllable middle name. Marie runs rampant in my family as a middle name and would sound nice with a lot of your top choices. Mae/May is a newer one i've been hearing often. Evangeline is at the top of my list with nn Evan.

Check out Baby Name Genie - they have a page where you can test drive a name - they put the name in different scenarios say them out loud and see how it feels.

We honestly did not agree on anything for such a long time, but we kind of liked the Spanish name Ariceli but not enough to use it. DH has a Spanish last name. We played around with names that sound like Ariceli and came up with Ariela! Which actually is a real name but neither of us know anyone called it and my family had to ask a million times how to pronounce it. Apparently my gran has only just got the hang of it and punches the air when she says it because she's SO proud of herself, ha ha.

We have very similar taste in names! I love classic, feminine names too. Several of yours were on my list too (Eleanor, Madeline, Natalie, Rose, Violet). I also loved Caroline, Emmeline, Annabelle, Clara, Lydia, Norah, etc.

We ended up naming her Charlotte. It's a family name from waaaay back in my family tree (like, a couple hundred years) but we actually decided on it after watching a movie that had a character named Charlotte with the nickname Charlie.

I swear I looked every name 5 times over and was still uninspired. I was looking at an employee list one day and saw an Audra listed and texted the name to my husband to see what he thought. I didn't instantly love it, but it had everything I wanted in a name and as we continued looking it just really stuck with me as being the right name. Her middle name is Quynh (Vietnamese and sounds like Quinn).

@NaturallyCathy: Our daughter's name is Cordelia and she goes by the nickname Cora...which is gaining popularity, but I still love both of her names.

We have the opposite problem! We have another name for a girl, but we're totally lost when it comes to boys names!

Also, because our children will have my husband's last name (mine too, I guess), I find myself drawn to honoring my family through the middle name rather than his. I dunno though.

DH came up with our girl name and it was one I finally liked and we could agree on. Her middle name is my MIL's name - it makes the IL's happy and flows with the first name, so I wasn't going to be too picky about the middle name.

Our girl names list was VERY much like yours (we were also team green)! We liked classic names but wanted the name to be "hers," not really a family/friend name. So that ruled out Eleanor, Grace, Madeline, Lillian, Natalie, Olivia, Diana, and many others. We ultimately named DD Elizabeth Rose!

That being said, you have fabulous taste and anything you choose will be excellent. ;P

@NaturallyCathy: Love all your names!! We were choosing between Cordelia and Josephine and ended up with Josephine. We also considered Madeline, Natalie, and Vivian. It was a really tough process to choose a name but we went to the hospital with a short list (the list changed all the time, but always included Cordelia and Josephine) and waited until she was born to make the final decision.

@NaturallyCathy: it's just an unofficial test to see how your child's name would sound if they were the president, a doctor, or a lawyer etc. I can't really see a President Bambi Smith, or famed neurosurgeon Dr {insert bizarre name or absurdly misspelled name}. It could just be me, but I think to an extent, people oftentimes live up to stereotypes surrounding their name.

i liked really feminine names that ended with an a. it had to be more than one syllable, because our last name is only one syllable and i wanted it to have a nice cadence to it. i also wanted to like the possible nicknames that could be derived from the name, and i didn't want the name to be overly popular. i chose a variation of lillian. LO's middle name is after my mother.

@babyjmama: My son's name got hijacked by DH's love of history, which is why I'm trying to appease his need for something classical and my need for something interesting! It's both helpful - and tremendously unhelpful at the same time - being an English major because as much as you love a name, you'd hate for someone to think of its origins. Like Ophelia. Or Leanor.

I've loved one of the girl names we like since HS, Brooke, the other is Aubrey and I just think it sounds really good with the middle name we'd use (Elizabeth) so we don't really have any good "ah-ha" moments.

@mediagirl: Emily would, unfortunately, be too close to a family member's name. While she would be thrilled, to have her think that I chose it because of her would make me less so - and I hate that because I actually really like that name! I also like Emma and Amelia but can't chose them for the same reason. Frustrating!

@katiew92081: I love Evangeline too. If I shortened it, I would shorten it to Eva. Which suddenly makes me think of Wall-E...

@Mrs. Jacks: We have some... interesting family names in our tree. One of them was Utopia Adelaide, on my side of the family. Funnily enough, I kinda like Adelaide but I don't think DH would be too keen on it.

@Maysprout: I think Valencia popped into my head because of the Decemberists. But I thought it sounded pretty so I added it to my list. And I'm sure I would try and shorten Cordelia to Cora if I get half a chance (<3 Downton Abbey)!
