@dreamocracy: I read that too, about not making changes for temporary issues... But te problem for us was that none of the things we had been doing previously worked. If we did them we would have essentially been sleep training. Never did get how you're supposed to do that!

@Emsmems: hope so! I think my LO's schedule and maybe her internal clock just get kind of screwed up when she's sick, even though I try not to let it happen. Either way I hope it passes soon!

We didn't really have a regression. His sleep was never all that great but never truly horrible either. Though now at 5.5 months we're dealing with a lot of teething pain at night. I don't think sleep training will help unt the teeth come in, so I co-bed when I need to (like this morning from 3am-7am) and I BF back to sleep.

Tried not to kill anyone? lol we just took it night by night. Sleep training was not a good idea for us during a regression though we tried a few nights. I mostly, cried, let her sleep in our bed & cried some more.

Just waited it out! I don't like to make permanent changes for a temporary issue, so I just did everything as usual until it passed. I had to do the same recently for a 9-10.5 month regression!

We co-slept for about 3 weeks & then sleep trained. It helped a lot but her sleep is still not that good at 6.5 months.

@Applesandbananas: same problem here, I work 3 days a week (12 hour shifts), and if DH tries to get him in the motn DS just screams because he wants to nurse.

@googly-eyes: a few days? Maybe I just need to wait longer?

@grizz: haha, yes! That should've been on the poll! Lots and lots of wine ;)

Thanks for the commiseration everyone. Looks like co-sleeping after 4am and just dealing with it is what we'll do for now, unless/until we get desperate.

I voted other because, um, I don't remember?! Pretty sure we did a combo of breastfeeding, cobedding, and sleep training. After she weaned, regressions got much tougher and then we just had to grin and bear it. Around 11 months she was up every couple of hours at night for maybe a month. This was after sleeping through the night since 6 months, so we really were struggling. It gets so much better though!

We had sleep trained for falling asleep right before 4 months and it was pretty rare for the initial falling asleep to be a big problem. The wake ups, I pretty much did whatever it took- nurse back to sleep, cobed, whatever. So I checked both sleep trained and grin and bear it (though there was NO grinning. More like me snapping at DH "It's FINE. I'll just never sleep again.")

Booze? ;)

My son's sleep was crap from birth, so we just dealt with it however we could (swaddles, co-sleeping, white noise, etc) until he was 7.5 or 8 months. At that point I was on the verge of a nervous breakdown and we sleep trained using a combination of Sleep Lady and Weissbluth.

We got the merlin magic sleep suit shortly after. That helped touch and go. We dealt with it until about 5.5 months, then sleep trained, because we were all exhausted and miserable.

We powered through. DD's consisted of waking up precisely every 2 hours when she had been only waking up 2 times per night. If it was a really bad night, I would bring her into the bed with me.

Our son refuses to co-bed and I didn't really feel safe about it anyways (NOTHING wakes DH up...I can seriously kick him in the back when he's snoring and get nothing.) Even room-sharing was a nightmare for us, so that was out. We had actually done a really light version of sleep training before hitting the 4MSR and it had worked insanely well and easily, but in my experience sleep training is not going to help with the regression - it's a growth spurt and they typically really need more calories when going through it. So while sometimes I may have waited a couple of minutes rather than going right into the nursery, for the most part I just had to grin and bear it while constantly reminding myself that it was temporary. But it was tough, I hope it gets better for you soon!

How long has he been better? My almost 20 month old still took a little bit to get back to her normal sleep after getting sick the last time. Like maybe a few days to a week? We had a lot going on though.

We didn't deal with a four month regression specifically but for other regressions we put her down in her crib and then after a certain time coslept either using the pnp or not (in bed with us.) at 16m I sleep trained LO...but at that point I knew she already knew how to self soothe, she just didn't WANT to sleep. I know others around here have has success with sleep training at 4 months though!

Just as the title says. How did you get through the 4 month sleep regression?

I think we are in it now (first I thought it was because he was sick, which it could've been, but he's better and his sleep is not). DS fought bedtime for almost 45 minutes tonight, and has since woken up 3 times in the last hour and a half. Ugh. I have just been nursing him back to sleep. Usually in the early morning I just bring him in bed with us. His naps suck too! I don't know what else to do! Sleep training may be in our near future!
