I used cabbage leaves and felt like it helped. I kept the cabbage in the fridge and would just tear a leaf off for each cup every so often. I'm not sure if it helped because it was a cold compress that could be easily be replaced (and perfectly fit around the cup) or if there is something more in the cabbage that is beneficial.

I also remember taking Benadryl and Advil and avoiding direct water from the shower (ouch!). If I remember correctly, the pain was mostly gone in a couple of days.

i took sudafed, advil around the clock, and didn't hold a kicking baby for a couple days. It just hurt sooo bad when she'd kick me! So DH got a lot of evening snuggles in for teh first couple days until the pain subsided. I also coincided it with returning to work, which helped because I just sit at a desk all day and if i sat still, they didn't throb

@Mrs. Oatmeal: Thanks for the info! I hadn't heard about peppermint tea so I'm giving that a shot now.

@Pumpkin Pie: Sorry to hear you're going through it too! These are the things no one thinks to tell you about.... :bummed:

@oliviaoblivia: I've heard that about cabbage leaves as well but wasn't really wanting to go down that route....DH bought some cabbage at the store tonight though (I think he's tired of me whinging about how sore I am, on top of being a hormonal mess as well!) so I may be giving it a try....

@Foodnerd81: It is so hard - I never expected to be this emotional about it! I thought I would be jumping for joy to finally have my body back for the first time in 3.5 years, but I am a complete wreck about it. Well done to you though for having such a great BF'ing relationship with C, 20 months is awesome!

@Anagram: Thanks for the tip! I'll try to give it another day or two of the antihistamines, cold compresses, and hand expressing, but it's good to know that using the pump to get the clog out didn't wreak havoc with the weaning process!

@Ree723: I had a clogged duct in one of my boobs two weeks after I pumped weaned. It started getting really painful, so I used the hand pump and pumped it out. It just took once, and then I never had to do it again.

I was surprised that even two weeks after stopping, I got out 2-3 oz! But I didn't have engorgement any more after that.

@Ree723: I can't help you with the sore boobs issue, but I just want to sympathize over being really sad over weaning. C just self weaned at 20 months and it happened exactly how I wanted- gradual, she totally led it, and I never even got engorged, just woke up with a soaking with shirt the first time I slept withot a shelf bra. But she tried to get her nursing pillow and ask for milk last night, exactly a week after her last nursing session, and I held it together and offered her a cup of milk, but totally cried after she went to bed. I will be so much more of a mess when this happens with our next and last baby.

Aw, I can't believe she's already so big!
I've heard that cabbage leaves help. Sounds hocus pocus-y to me though.
When I weaned L is was just like how you weaned E. No pain, just no milk. I was really hormonal and emotional over it though, probably yelled at DH more than I should have.

I'm trying to wean off the pump and I'm so scared of the clogged ducts/ getting an infection. This stinks. I've been drinking peppermint tea, but it's not helping.

My midwives recommended drinking a ton of peppermint tea, taking antihistamines, and using cold compresses. For me, the pain wasn't awful, but lasted quite a few weeks. I also made sure that I slept in a bra for the first few weeks, so that I wasn't leaking and so that I wasn't bumping/pushing on my boobs in my sleep. Good luck!!

How come nobody ever told me weaning is such an uncomfortable process?! With DD1, I weaned her at 13 months when I was 12 weeks pregnant, and has absolutely no problems. I tapered off the feedings over a period of two weeks and one day, just didn't give her that last feed and that was it. No engorgement, no pain - nothing. Milk gone, just like that. I thought that was how it worked every time - ha, shows what I know!

DD2 is 14 months old and I just dropped the last feed a week and a half ago. We had been down to one feed a day for the previous three weeks, so I thought my supply was at an ok stage to drop that feed, but ten days on now and it is still so uncomfortable! I'm not engorged, but my boobs are so sore and the slightest touch or pressure against them makes me wince in pain. I think I may be getting a clogged duct in one, but I don't know how to get rid of it without breaking out the pump or feeding off that side, neither of which I want to do of course as I'm trying to stop all milk production.

I've been using cold compresses and have just started taking Benadryl at night, hoping the antihistamine will help dry things up, but I'm really uncomfortable and worried about a clogged duct that could then turn into mastitis. I tried massaging and hand expressing this morning but it doesn't seem to have made much of a difference.

I've also been ridiculously sad about weaning (we think DD2 is probably our last baby) and to be perfectly honest, I wasn't fully ready to drop that last feed when we did. It was very abrupt as DH and I had somewhere to be last Saturday evening and were going to be very late if I fed DD before we left. My mom, who was babysitting, put a lot of pressure on to just forget the feed and go (she's never been super supportive of BF'ing), and rather than get into an argument, I did. But really, I probably would have continued on for another month or so had it not been for that situation. Anyway, I digress, but I'm wondering if the abruptness of it all and the resulting emotional roller coaster is having an adverse effect on the weaning process.

Anyway, any advice or tips to share on how to make the weaning process less painful and/or get rid of a clogged duct without pumping or feeding again?
